Dear readers,

Yesterday morning I updated this WinXp laptop with the latest security hot fixes from Microsoft. After the reboot I could not open IE anymore, gave me following error "The instruction at "0x370036b4" referenced memory at "0x00000428". The memory could not be read". Did a search on the Internet and found several threads that this error could well be caused by a virus/malware etc.

Installed Ad-Aware AE, updated detection files, and run a scan.

Confirmed Ad-Aware to remove the Cookies and the infected file. Rebooted the laptop and run a scan again. Ad-Aware reported the same file being infected with the Win32.Trojan.NS.

Disabled system restore on all drives (C:\ and D:\), rebooted to XP Safe Mode, and again run an Ad-Aware scan, action remove file. Rebooted to normal mode and again run a scan, this time Ad-Aware did not report an infected file.

Above sound good, but IE has the same problem. As soon as I doubleclick IE, I'm getting "The instruction at "0x370036b4" referenced memory at "0x00000428". The memory could not be read" and then hangs.

Below is a HijackThis report.

Solved.

First be sure the mall ware/virus/Trojan has been removed from your PC, I have run 4 different scanners to be sure.

Then follow below two steps.

How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

Follow below instructions

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_symptoms2100

I do not mind losing my customizations

If you can barely use Internet Explorer, the fastest way to try to resolve the problem is to remove all the customizations that you or a Web site may have made. Besides being fast, there is also a good chance that this method will be the one to resolve the problem. However, this method will restore Internet Explorer to the state it was in when it was first installed
