Adding to the Above: Keep getting Window Security Center pop ups in lower right corner, when clicked on to close takes Internet Explorer to this web address: antispynet.com

This pop up and more telling me I have various infections, all lead to this website.

Windows Task Manager to end processes is hijacked as well, can't close Rogue Programs down.

WindowsXP system restore will not let me go back in time to an earlier point.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

DEMOMAN
Still something going on. I keep getting a little pop up message

Project1 Run-Time error 13 type mismatch

I close it and it reappears instantly.
DEMOMAN
officescan.exe, smrtdrv.exe and other nasties still here. sad.gif

I'll keep fighting. Can I just try to use WindowsXP restore point to take me back in time to a happy place?

I found this little tidbit. I believe this little devil is at the root of my problems.

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6ca7b3a8efd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989

disguised as wmiprvse.exe

also listed in C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem

these both appear at the same time 8/4/06 1:56am I would bet the same time my problems all started. I hope this helps.

I want to zap this thing so bad I can taste it.

Many thanks for all your efforts.

* Please download LSPfix from here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/lspfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and run it. Check "I know what I'm doing", and then select each instance of "xfire_lsp_7651.dll" in the left-hand panel and click >> to move it to the right-hand panel. Then click Finish to allow LSPfix to rebuild the LSP chain.

Browser viewing is still sluggish. Normally when scrolling, scroll is instantaneous, however since this attack, scroll is incremental and choppy.

They're back! It's because you have real-time antispyware protection running that sets the changes made by hijackthis back!

* Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper Shields
  • Open SpySweeper.
  • Click Shield Settings on the right
(or Shields on the left, depending what screen you're on).
  • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
  • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
  • Click Hosts File and uncheck all items.
  • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Close SpySweeper.
* Please disable CounterSpy, as it may hinder in fixing of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable CounterSpy:
  • Right Click on the CounterSpy Icon located in your system tray.
  • With your mouse, hover over Active Protection Status (This should be enabled)
  • A menu will slide out, then right click on Disable Active Protection
Once your log is clean please re-enable CounterSpy.

* Launch Ewido and in the main window click "Realtime protection" (in green indicating "Active") to change to inactive.

* Also, make sure that TrustSoft AntiSpyware is disabled, also prevent it from starting up with windows!

* After doing that, fix the lines again in hijackthis and reboot!

* Now, post a new hijackthis log here

Couple of things here.

CounterSpy is something I dont want on my computer anymore, tried to get rid of it months ago, there is no uninstall feature available to me, and Add/Remove programs does not list it.

Same with TrustSoft, are they the same thing?

I found this tidbit in doing more research on another forum.

I've been affected by this too, and may have found something that helps...?

Using some of the solutions in this thread, I have eliminated the pop-ups and system slow down, but from time to time when I am surfing the Internet or using a program the active program window will change (not to another program, but just sort of a frozen state for a second) before popping back to whatever program I was using. I alt-tabbed while this happened and discovered on the program list the items "Form_Honeypot" and "Form_Main" under the Spy Sweeper logo.

Using the PrevX thing, I discovered that whatever this thing is has infiltrated Spy Sweeper under the name "ssu.exe"... it cannot be deleted, and when I moved it to my Symantec Anti-Virus quarantine it immediately re-installed itself.

PrevX also confirmed that it's hijacked the svchost.exe file, but passed through it is as safe, even though PrevX recognizes that it's creating tons of malware activity and embedded in various programs and such.

At first I just wanted to eliminate the pop-ups, but now I realize that this thing is much, much stronger than that and is extremely powerful.

ETA: It also uses "wrsshp.exe" under Spy Sweeper as well. I guess there's some tie-in where in affects Spy Sweeper and Hewlett Packard (thus the ss and hp parts)

Looking good now.
DEMOMAN
Something is still not right. Albeit I feel cleaner. smile.gif

When viewing in any web browser I'm getting really choppy movements, unlike before the attack.

What are the odds SpySweeper was hit with something?

Can I do a system Restore back to a point before all this took place? Now that we've eliminated a great deal.

QUOTE
Can I do a system Restore back to a point before all this took place? Now that we've eliminated a great deal.

Huh? then why did we cleaned up all the malware? I recommend firefox as browser. smile.gif

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we at Lavasoftsupport are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. tongue.gif

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. biggrin.gif
DEMOMAN
Thank You very much for all your hard work and efforts. I really appreciate it.

I'm only so so when it comes to computer knowledge, I thought once we got rid of all the bad Items I could do a system restore to a point BEFORE I got them.

Prior to me posting here I attempted system restore and the Virus would not let me.

Currently although it appears my system is clean, it is not running the way it did before the attack. Much slower.

P4 2.8
1.5 gigs ram
ATI Radeon 850xt
Cable Internet

The system is no monster but it worked much better before the attack, hence I'm happy the baddies appear gone, now I want my old computer back to the way it was.

I'm not that knowledgable on what system restore does, all I know is with the bugs I could not do one.

Thanks again for all your help.
jurgenv
Try to defrag your computer. smile.gif
DEMOMAN
With continued research I have found this discussion.

MAJOR WARNING

I have been cleaning this file from Windows 2000/XP workstations as it is also a trojan. I cannot find ANYTHING about this on the web - I keep, instead, finding forums like this discussing the legitimate use of the normal file.
......
I found it in the WBEM folder. I did read that the legitimate file resides only in the SYSTEM32 folder but not sure if this accurate.

No - it's the opposite! smile.gif

The good one is %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe
- located among all the other wmi*.* files.

The bad one is %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\wmiprvse.exe
- and it will of course need "extra help" to get started each time Windows starts;
it will make a reference to itself in the start-up lpace of the Windows Registry,
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

Upon looking at my version of the following programs
wmiprvse
wmiapsrv

in both cases under Properties the following was listed.
Created: Tuesday April 9th, 2002 2:54pm
Modified: August 4th, 2006 1:56am (at this time I was surfing the web)

This is the time all my problems started.

These programs have been modified how can I change them back or verify what changes have been made to them?

Can I upload them to you?
jurgenv
Please upload the file here:

And paste the results here

yes, that is the one I uploaded.

The fact that my version says "modified 8/4/2006" makes me nervous.

I'm worried that it's so new, the AntiVirus/AntiSpyware experts are not aware of it as of yet.

I've done searches on this topic regarding these programs and found some questionable results. Many say legitimate, many say questionable.

It is a concern. I did nothing to modify mine intentionally. What exactly was modified I don't know.

A subtle but dangerous modification may go undetected at this point.
