When I go to open Adaware I get this message:
"
System error: 1814 has occurred. Description: Could not login to service.
Are you running this application as another user?
Application terminates.
"
I noticed another post about this same error message. It said to delete the definitions file named core.aawdef or something like that, then restart the computer. I looked in the directory and did not find any file named core. I then opened the help user manual that was installed back when I put adaware on my computer. It said to download the latest definitions file manually from the lavasoft website. Since that file comes in a zip file, it said to extract the contents to the location where adaware was stored. It is on my c:\program files\lavasoft\ad-aware. I extracted the contents there yet the file still will not open.

I'm stuck. Help!

You said you "looked in the directory"...?

This thread gave different instructions than you described, I think: Resolved: Ad-Aware 2008 High CPU issue or system error 1814, with latest update http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=24348

It says...
Location: (2000, XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lavasoft \Ad-Aware\core.aawdef

Location Vista: (Vista) - C:\ProgramData\Lavasoft \Ad-Aware\ core.aawdef

Are you on XP, Vista...?
