Tried to run an update; said server was busy. But, wouldn't stop running. Tried to uninstall from control panel, and got Error 1921 service "Lavasoft Ad-aware service" could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system service.

I'm the only user/administrator. Tried to download the free AE version since that should uninstall, but got the same thing. If I go into Program Files and try to delete it says it's "in use".

Have also tried system restore.

Any thoughts?? THX

I also cannot stop this aawservice from seriously slowing my computer. It is taking up 50% of my CPU, and on task monitor it says 151,616K of memory, and is causing problems for all applications.

My computer has plenty of RAM (4GB) and free disk space (212GB)
Ad-aware has been running Ok for quite a while this has just started happening.
when I now try to open ad-aware , I get system error 1814 occurred. could not login to service. are you running application as another user. application terminates. I am running windows vista and have full priveleges.
I have tried doing end process from task manager but this doesnt work either, it starts again immediately.

Need a program to remove whats left of Ad Aware2008?

I also found after reading this I had 50% CPU all the time as well.

I cured this by having open both the Windows task manager and the Lavasoft/AdAware file,
stop aawservice in Task manager and very quickly remove the Lavasoft file folder into the recycle bin before aawservice can start up again.
It worked for me smile.gif

I'm having same problem while running Windows XP. Tried doing a system restore without success. Task Manager does not show AdAware as running.

Success! I found something similar posted about a problem with IE 7 and AdAware 2007. (http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=22364)

They suggested downloading a Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 It didn't help my situation

They also showed how to go into start > run > services.msc and stop adaware that way (it's listed alphabetically as Lavasoft Ad-Aware).
But the problem I had was that mine was saying "starting"... apparently the software was stuck in some kinda startup loop. But by right clicking and selecting Properties I was able to "disable" AdAware's Startup Type. And while it was still cranking away afterward, when I rebooted it had stopped.

Not sure if I should just go into Program Files and delete entire Lavasoft folder or re-install the latest version on top of what's left. Can't use Add/Remove option from Control Panel because it's not showing up there any longer.

Hi biggrin.gif
@ topic starter
push WIN + <R> , type 'services.msc' , enter , locate the Lavasoft entry, stop the services, wait a few seconds,
restart the service.
Know uninstall obsolete AAW versions with 'Revo uninstaller'* in the highest mode (advanced )
reboot
start a fresh download and installation with disabled security software.
If you need further advice, post back

At 3:00 am I finally figured out how to stop it from running: Control Panel, Admin Tools, Services - then on the Lavasoft general tab, changed start-up to disabled. Rebooted, and it had stopped.

Took the opportunity to delete the program from add/remove so don't know if the fix file was there, but thanks for fixing.

While looking on the board for answers my new dilemma is whether to do AE - doesn't sound too loved!

Thanks!

Hi Jeff,
I'm using Vista, I have no such file as core.aawdef under Ad-Aware folder. Where can I find this? I'm getting the 1814 and 1921 codes also.
Thanks,
Don

i am using vista and it worked. did you check under program data folder not program files?

Some LS sweetie locked up the other topic related to this {GRR!}.
I finally succeeded in stopping this by whacking aawservice with Task Manager control panel and getting the product removed. I have yet to decide whether to just go and install the AE version and be done with it. Ta-ta! huh.gif

If you can't see the file in the correct path, then it probably got moved when Ad-Aware tried updating. Downloading the new definition file into that folder should work ok.

The above allowed me to remove ALL of the old version.
I then reloaded the 2008 version from my hard disc (aaw2008.exe), which went OK, then downloaded the updates about 1 hour ago and all appears to be working OK again.
