I've installed 2008 Free to 1 computer and AE Free to another computer. On both computers, Ad-Aware opens without prompting and asks for an upgrade or update. I've looked at all the settings and all automatic processes are turned off. This is very annoying to be right in the middle of working on something else and have the silly thing open right on top of what you are doing. Is there in fact a setting to turn the thing off and only have it open when I want to do a manual scan?

disable both update options
go back to the main tab
open Ad-Watch live
disable Processes
is the main Ad-Watch button grey you can close.

I had already disabled all that stuff.
As it turns out, upon reinstalling the program, I saw that it was necessary to install Visual C++ to make it run correctly.
Previously, I had unwittingly uninstalled Visual C++ through Add & Remove Programs, when cleaning up my computers for better performance.
So... now Ad-Aware is working like it should... it has not popped up unexpectedly again.
