Hi there,

My fathers PC has become infected - AVG reports threats periodically and Ad-Aware found the Win32Backdoor trojan/virus.

I've followed the recommended procedures, (cleansed as far as possible), and have run a hijack this scan.
Here is the log:

Any help is very gratefully received as all automated processes seem to involve scanning for several hours, cleaning up and then the alerts re-appearing shortly afterwards.

Many thanks,

Hello Mike,

Yes, it's pretty infected. Looks like it is avoiding complete removal by replicating itself when detected.

Let's try this free tool please.

Download ComboFix from here:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Thanks CalamityJane - Combofix.txt is attached.

LS CalamityJane
Thanks for the log.

That took care of a lot, but we have more to do. I need to examine some files and I'll give you some instruction on how to get them to me.

First I want to take a look at the files ComboFix quarantined. Here is how to do that
Go to this folder:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine
rightclick on it. Choose "send to compressed (zipped) folder" and that will make a zip file
in the same location, i.e.;
C:\QooBox\Quarantine.zip

Please go here to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
http://www.uploadmalware.com/

* In the email field: (email not needed) Instead, please enter your username from this forum as: peppert at LS

* in the Topic where file was requested field: Copy and paste the link to this thread:

* Click "Browse" on the 1. field.
Browse to the following file and click the file with your mouse, press "Open"
C:\QooBox\Quarantine.zip

* In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file

* Click on Send File
...............

Then, please repeat the above process with each of the following (or you can put them all into one zip file and upload that). But I need to see all of these (you can do 6 at a time if sending singly)

c:\windows\system32\Drivers\ati5bexx.sys

c:\windows\system32\Drivers\ati8gnxx.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethafmjf.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethbxyhu.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethfywit.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethiqzsn.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethozcty.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethrwvvi.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethujdmt.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethuuwjv.sys

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ethwqgpz.sys

Done, but note that AVG anti virus and ad-aware have in the mean time found and removed 'bad' things from the QooBox/Quaranteen folders to their own respective Quaranteen folders. Let me know if you need to see copies of these too, (if I can find them)

None of these files exist in the c:\windows\system32\drivers folder, (and just in case I did a whole computer search of the last file and that does not exist anywhere).
There are various similar named files in the drivers folder, (eg ati1btxx.sys, ati1mdxx.sys etc etc etc), and so I tried to zip and upload the whole drivers folder.... I'm not convinced I managed that though, maybe it was too big at around 50MB.

Many thanks for your prompt replies so far - let me know of anything else that needs doing.

Regards,
Mike
LS CalamityJane
Hi Mike,

No, don't delete any similar files in the drivers folder because they are probably legit.

Actually that list I gave you - those files should have already been deleted (and I missed the fact the log was telling me that).

But let me go look at this quarantine folder you uploaded and I'll come back with a reply.

Could you meanwhile scan with HijackThis and give me a fresh log from it too please so I can see where we are at this point smile.gif

Many thanks Calamity Jane for your long and very detailed instructions.... hopefully everything seems to be fine now.
Is there a simple explanation as to why the tools we used can not be incorporated into Ad-Aware? - It would be great to be able to clean up all of the discvored threats at the push of a button.

Thanks again,
Mike

Hi, the stand-alone tools are developed by mostly volunteers helping in forums all over the globe (like this one). It's a combination of 3rd party tools and very complicated - requires human analysis of the results by a trained eye since it can have FPs or needs special removal steps based on what we see in the logs. It isn't the type of thing we could incorporate into Ad-Aware, but we're always improving the Ad-Aware program to deal with the more difficult malware

Let's do some final clean up and you should be good to go smile.gif

This step will uninstall the ComboFix tool, delete any remaining quarantined files, and reset your Windows Folder options to default (to rehide operating system files, etc), since it isn't needed anymore:

Click Start, then click Run.
Enter into the command box that opens: combofix /u and then click OK.

Do a disk cleanup. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: Cleanmgr
Wait while Windows scans your system for files to delete.
Make sure these 3 are checkmarked and press *ok* to delete them.

Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Put a Checkmark in the box next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the checkmark next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Also, I can't stress enough the importance of having your Windows critical Security Updates. Most malware today uses exploits on unpatched systems to creep onto your system without your even doing anything but visiting an infected webpage!!
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update

Watch what you download, be careful where you surf, and don't trust attachments or even links in email and Instant messages. Even if they come from a buddy, that buddy could be the one infected and it is the virus sending that link from his account. You click on it thinking he is trusted, and *boom* you're infected.
Many "Phishing" attempts are made by cleverly crafted email to look like it is coming from an "official" source (like Microsoft, or your bank, or some other provider). Don't click on links in those. Go directly to the site instead and navigate the menus - don't trust email you think came from a "safe source" unless you are expecting it! There is more in the link I will provide below, but those are the choice avenues of infection these days.
Stay far AWAY from cracks and warez sites - you're sure to get infected files there, and the same can be said for files downloaded from p2p (more than half are usually infected and probably not detectable by your current security software - the newest nasties are always released in those venues).

A word about shared computers and networks.
Share Your PC

Not all users need to have Admin Accounts. It is much safer to have most of your users on a shared system running as Limited User accounts. That way, if there is "an accident", it will only affect one user's account and not the entire system.

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.1 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:

Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.

So far I'd just been completing all of your instructions remotely over VNC, but I've just paid a visit to my father this weekend and have now done the 'tidy up' too.
Once again many thanks for your detailed help CalamityJane.
Regards,
Mike
