Kerry
I am having the same issue with AE in the log folder i do not have update logs as far as i can see there are various scan reports all of 0kb, there is Debug, Rp, RPNetwork, RPProcess, RPRegistry and service.

QUOTE(karateken @ Feb 8 2009, 08:43 PM) *
Type "cmd" into the run prompt (Windows key then press R at the same time) then enter

Then type in "ping download.lavasoft.com" enter

You should get a reply from 82.99.19.110 ip address which is correct

if you get anything else like 127.0.0.1 then you have a trojan or virus which is redirecting this address
that is stopping ad-aware from updating. This is what I had.

Regards.

Mine is coming up 127.0.0.1
None of my virus, spyware, maleware programs are finding anything any suggestions??
I have run, AVG Free, AVG-Antispyware (cant Update either), ad-aware SE, AD-ware AE, Malwarebytes (Cant update) and spybot wont load

Hello Kerry biggrin.gif
plz install 'HijackThis' (sig.), run a scan and copy/paste the log in your next reply.
Regards
Raziel wink.gif

LS CalamityJane
Yep, It is an infection blocking updates. I can see it in the log (looks like Vundo) but HijackThis can't deal with it. Let's use this free tool instead

Download ComboFix from here:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Kerry
More problems it seems, i ran combofix and i can not get online now. I have checked the status of the wireless and it is coming up with an error

QUOTE
Windows cannot load the device for this hardware. The driver maybe corrupted or missing (code 39)

I can type up the combofix document on my husbands computer if you need to see it. Otherwise i can not get it on here as my laptop is now no longer connecting to the internet.
Any ideas where to go next.
Thanks
LS CalamityJane
Did the computer reboot after running the tool? If not, please try rebooting your PC

You can transfer the log to another computer and copy to here.

It would be located on the hard-drive (C:) named as: ComboFix.txt
Kerry
Yes i have rebooted it several times. If i put the log onto a pen drive the virus wont be spread via this method would it?
LS CalamityJane
Well, it's possible it might have such an infection. Let's run this free tool on both the affected machine and the non-infected machine to prevent that possibility and so you can safely use the flashdrive.

Also be sure to plug in the flash drive when you run the tool

Download this free removal tool to your desktop:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/s...Disinfector.exe
If you have any flashdrives that have been used previously, insert your flashdrive as well, because above tool will disinfect it as well.
Then doubleclick the Flash_Disinfector.exe to run the tool.
Your desktop and icons will disappear afterwards. This is normal.
When the tool has finished, reboot your computer.

I noticed this referes to utorrent being installed on the 6th but i never installed it im assuming its some sort of p2p client and i havent used one of those in year since i got a virus off limewire, i have looked all over my laptop and cant find it anywhere??? A family friend did use my pc on the 6th so im wondering if they installed it and then removed it? How can i ensure it has all totally gone? i have checked program files and add/remove programs but cant see it anywhere.
LS CalamityJane
Ok, thanks for the log.

Interesting about utorrent. I saw that on there too and was going to warn you about P2P file sharing. Now I should probably warn you about letting your friends use your PC (especially your Admin account!) Set up a guest account for them to use and be sure you log off your own user before letting anyone use it. It's looks like someone did install something on there without your knowledge and got your PC infected with a really bad one - looks like a rootkit.

But I also see that ComboFix may have deleted a valid file so I need to examine the files it quarantined. That way I can also not only run a fix to put back any files that should be restored, but I can also examine the infected files to let you know what type of nasty may have been running on there (and I'll get them submitted for detection).

Go to this folder:

C:\QooBox\Quarantine
rightclick on it. Choose "send to compressed (zipped) folder" and that will make a zip file
in the same location, i.e.;
C:\QooBox\Quarantine.zip

Please go here to upload that zip file for analysis.

* in the Topic where file was requested field: Copy and paste the link to this thread:

* Click "Browse" on the 1. field.
Browse to the following file and click the file with your mouse, press "Open"
C:\QooBox\Quarantine.zip

* In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file

* Click on Send File
............
Could you also please scan that computer again with HijackThis and post a fresh HijackThis log too?
Kerry
Thanks for your help so far. I have submitted that file to the site you said and here is a new log. Also i have noticed on my desktop after combofix scanned there is a notepad file which wasnt there before called catchme this mentions rootkit. Dont know if that means anything to you.

LS CalamityJane
Thanks for the files and new logs. Catchme.txt is ok - it's a log file made by the ComboFix tool. I don't know why it would be on the desktop though. You can delete it

There was one file deleted should not have been. This next step will restore it

Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text you see in BLUE below into notepad:

DEQUARANTINE::
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\Drivers\ss.sys
QUIT::

Save this file to your desktop as textfile and name it: CFScript and close it.

Then drag the CFScript text file you made, into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. When it finishes, post the contents of new log which will be called: DeQuarantine_log.txt

I've still got to review the last log you post so I'll be back again after I do that
Kerry
I did this but the only file it has created it another combofixfile.txt
LS CalamityJane
Ok, Post that please - it may show me what I need to see

We're going to have some more steps to do, so hang on while I'm writing that up
Kerry
Here is the new log it produced:

DEQUARANTINE::

LS CalamityJane
Hi, no - the colon isn't part of the script.

Let's do it another way.

I've attached a zip file to this post that contains your clean ss.sys file. Unzip/extract this file from the zip file and place it into your drivers folder located here:

c:\windows\system32\drivers

so you should then have this file in place as:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\ss.sys

Kerry
Thanks im back online, on the laptop, its still running very slowly
LS CalamityJane
Super, ok we have more to do here. Follow these steps next.

Disable any resident protection programs just before you do these steps so they don't interfere with this fix.
Disable Ad-watch (rightclick the Ad-Aware icon in the tray and choose *disable*)
Spybot - make Teatimer is not running
Any other realtime security programs, disable where possible
(we'll renable all these when you get through these steps)

And on reboot if any security programs squawk about changes to the registry, please *allow*, because these changes are part of the fix (they are good changes not bad).
.............
Close all other programs so you have only HijackThis open

Open HijackThis and choose to do a *system scan only*

When it finishes, place a checkmark next to the following entries in the list (if present)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = ;<local>

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

O23 - Service: Print Spooler Service (oeebp1sia) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dyeqf.exe (file missing)

Once you have all those checkmarked, press *fix checked*. Close Hijackthis and reopen it again

Open HijackThis
Click on: Config
Click on: Misc Tools
Click on: Delete an NT Service
In the prompt: Delete a Windows NT Service enter the following: oeebp1sia
Press OK

Restart the computer.

After the reboot, could you please scan once more with HijackThis and produce a fresh log. Post it in your reply so I can review.

Kerry
right i have fixed all those you said 2 werent there
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dyeqf] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dyeqf.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [dyeqf] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dyeqf.exe

When i go onto the next part
delete nt service it tells me oeebp1sia is running and i need to disable it. I did another scan only and
O23 - Service: Print Spooler Service (oeebp1sia) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dyeqf.exe (file missing)
is not going its still there so i checked it again and pressed fix checked and its still there every time. Not sure what to do now sorry

thanks again for all your help so far
LS CalamityJane
Ok, let's try this

Go to start > run and copy and paste these commands you see in bold below into the white box:

sc stop oeebp1sia

(hit enter)

sc delete oeebp1sia

(hit enter).

Then delete the file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dyeqf.exe <- - - if present, I believe that has already been deleted however.

If you're not able to delete it, perform above steps again in safe mode.
Kerry
Ok that seemed to have worked and i did a system scan for dyeqf.exe and it brings up nothing here is another log file for you.

Looks good! I'll have some final cleanup steps but I think that's got it for now anyway. How is your PC acting and your programs that weren't working properly before? Can you update, etc.?
Kerry
Hi its much better thanks
Its still running a bit slow bit i think it needs a general clean up, not that i know where to start.
One program isnt updating but i think it might be its out of date and they arent doing updates for it any more
Thanks for all your help, would you mind if i post a hijackthis log off my husband computer just to check nothing transfered in the process of swapping files.
Also is there anything else i can do? I have ccleaner and wondered if doing a registry clean would be an idea? or could that cause problems for myself?

Thanks for all your help, its inspired me to take one of the courses to learn how to do it myself.
LS CalamityJane
Registry cleaners can do more harm than good if you don't know exactly what you are doing. It's best to leave those aside because there isn't much benefit. The things that will help are built right into your computer and I'll give you some steps once we are done here.

I suspect it's your AVG Antivirus that isn't updating. 7.5 version is obsolete now and they have a free upgrade to the latest version 8.0 here:
http://free.avg.com/
(If you are using the paid version you can also upgrade that one too)

Also Your Sun Java is very out of date and a security vulnerability!

Old versions left on your pc, even after updating can be vulnerable to malware exploit. Go to Start / Control Panel and look in Add/Remove programs. Remove all old versions of Sun Java.
They will appear in the "J's" something similar to:

j2re1.4.2_05 or

JAVA 2 RUNTIME ENVIROMENT SE V1.4.2_03

JAVA 2 RUNTIME ENVIROMENT SE V.14.2_06

(or similar, and there may be more than one. Remove them all)

Then go get the latest up to date version here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Here's why removing old versions of Sun Java is important:
Potential Vulnerability with Sun Java auto update
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14738046

This is a vulnerability in that Sun Java new updated versions do not remove prior vulnerable versions. You will have to remember to do that manually whenever you update your Sun Java.
...................
Some final cleanup and prevention recommendations follow.

This step will uninstall the ComboFix tool, delete any remaining quarantined files, and reset your Windows Folder options to default (to rehide operating system files, etc), since it isn't needed anymore:

Click Start, then click Run.
Enter into the command box that opens: combofix /u and then click OK.

Do a disk cleanup. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: Cleanmgr
Wait while Windows scans your system for files to delete.
Make sure these 3 are checkmarked and press *ok* to delete them.

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Put a Checkmark in the box next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the checkmark next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

......................

Also, I can't stress enough the importance of having your Windows critical Security Updates. Most malware today uses exploits on unpatched systems to creep onto your system without your even doing anything but visiting an infected webpage!!
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/

Watch what you download, be careful where you surf, and don't trust attachments or even links in email and Instant messages. Even if they come from a buddy, that buddy could be the one infected and it is the virus sending that link from his account. You click on it thinking he is trusted, and *boom* you're infected.
Many "Phishing" attempts are made by cleverly crafted email to look like it is coming from an "official" source (like Microsoft, or your bank, or some other provider). Don't click on links in those. Go directly to the site instead and navigate the menus - don't trust email you think came from a "safe source" unless you are expecting it! There is more in the link I will provide below, but those are the choice avenues of infection these days.
Stay far AWAY from cracks and warez sites - you're sure to get infected files there, and the same can be said for files downloaded from p2p (more than half are usually infected and probably not detectable by your current security software - the newest nasties are always released in those venues).

A word about shared computers and networks.
Share Your PC
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/s...hare/intro.mspx
Not all users need to have Admin Accounts. It is much safer to have most of your users on a shared system running as Limited User accounts. That way, if there is "an accident", it will only affect one user's account and not the entire system.

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.1 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...s/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
