Updated my free ad aware edition last night to the new anniversary edition. All seemed to go well with the update without errors. Yet I am now unable to open the application. I get an hour class after clicking the icon and then it disappears shortly after and nothing opens. There are no error message appearing either. I was happy with the older version.
I next uninstalled ad aware and tried re-installing a few times. Same problem exists. It doesn't seem to matter which method I use to attempt to open the application, I get the same problem each time. I should add that I have Norton Anti-virus running, not sure if this is a problem. My OS is WIndows XP on a home PC.
Help!!!!

Hi, can you go to start>run and then type services.msc
look for a service with a name along the lines of AAWService or Lavasoft AdAware Service and post a screenshot showing both its current state (i.e. is it currently running) and it's startup state (manual, automatic, or off).
Thank you.

Hi, I have the same problem as birdog12. I ran services.msc and found no reference to AAWService or Lavasoft AdAware Service or any other references to your product. I use Win/2000 and have had no issues with previous versions.
I hate to have to go back to the previous version when this one promises so many improvements.
I'd appreciate any other suggestions, thanks so much for your help.

I am having the same problem as both of you. I uninstalled this new edition and tried to download my old edition, but the new edition download kept popping up. I have never had trouble with Ad Aware before, and I am really puzzled. I hope that someone can tell us what to do. Thanks!!!

I find nothing along those lines at all in the window from services.msc. I cannot find any text in the window concerning ad aware or lavasoft.
I do notice in the Windows Task Manager + Processes that if I attempt to open ad aware AE, two Ad-Aware.exe names appear in the "Image Name" with 00 CPU and Mem Usage of 10,980 K and 2,976 K. They both disappear in a few seconds and once again, no application is started.

179 views on this thread and still no response from Lava. It's obvious quite a few others have experienced the same problem. Since no one seems interested in helping from your company after a week, I would not even consider purchasing your product. I am so sorry that I updated to this new version which has caused the problem!!!!! I am forced to find another application. Maybe that was your intention. Good luck to all!

Hi,
There have been a few updates to the program in the last couple of days, so please try to update (or download the latest installer file).
@birdog12, these forums are specifically for the free version users and Lavasoft say they do not monitor them. If you want professional customer support you need the pro/plus versions.

Thank you Casey, I understand.
I downloaded the latest installer as you suggested. This time at least I get the ad aware anniversary edition "loading" window to come up for 30 seconds or so, then it disappears and that's it. No application is started. Is there a specific sight I should go to download the latest free addition? Anymore suggestions are appreciated! I removed the program once again.

Ran Command Prompt and found aawservice with the command "sc query aawservice"
Deleted the service with "sc delete aawservice"
Let me know if any of the above work!

None of the above worked. Unfortunately, I still had the exact same result. I did find a few old folders and files for Lavasoft ad aware 2007 in: documents and settings/all users/application data/lavasoft file and deleted prior to re installing AE. I also tried the custom install as suggested, same result again. Typing in "sc query aawservice" at the command prompt finds: "The specified service does not exist as an installed service". Also downloaded the Extended Task Manager and find no aawservice (or lavasoft or ad aware) service running.
Is there any chance on getting an old install shield for ad aware 2007 or 2008 in the mean time?
Thanks once again.

Hi,
can you please check DEP so that we can rule that out as a cause.

Thanks for the continued help. I added ad-aware.exe and aawservice.exe to the DEP. There was no lsupdatemanager.exe in the adaware folder so I could not add it. I then restarted the PC. Unfortunately the results were the same: Ad-aware anniverary edition began to start then quit after about 30 seconds.
What next? (Any chance to get any earlier version until this problem is solved?)

OK, downloaded CCleaner but I'm not familiar with how to use it. How do I remove just adaware/lavasoft items only?
Sorry! Or should I just run the cleaner on everything?

I too have been experiencing the same problem with AA Anniv. edition for the last 3 days and now I keep getting virus warnings from every website that sells anti-virus products. I too do not get any warnings or error messages. The image of the AA ANNIV Edition symbol appears and shows "loading...", however, it simply disappears after about 30 seconds and does not load. i also tried to uninstall and then reinstall it again several times to no avail. I have tried to load using the service manual, the attempted to start from the ad-aware tray, etc. My OS is also windows XP on a home PC, but the ad-awae pro was working perfectly prior to downloading this software. I really need to use my computer since I work from home. Now i believe I may have tons of viruses as well.
I would be happy just to have the old version back and working. Please save me and my PC. This is driving me crazy.

@birddog12
Please scan everything, but you only need remove AAW/LS related items.
You can remove the other stuff if you like, but (as with any automated registry manipulator) it might have misidentified an error.

I appoligize but could you be more clear. If I run the Analyze function, it shows me what items will be deleted but does not give me a chance to select or deselect any objects. I believe if I just "Run Cleaner", it will delete a lot of files, some of which I might not want to delete. I have already "uninstalled" adaware AE using the control panel on my PC. Do you possibly mean to reload it then use CCleaner to uninstall the application.
Sorry once again. I do not mean to be difficult. Just not sure how to use ccleaner and do not want to mess more things up on the PC.
Thanks for your patience!

Hi,
Please look under the registry tab:

OK, I ran the CCleaner registry cleaner and fixed several items which had adaware and lavasoft text in them. I then restarted the PC and reinstalled adaware AE. Once again (sadly) I had exactly the same results. Loaded for about 30 seconds and then nothing.
I must state that there was literally dozens of items listed in the registry scan. But only a few from adaware/lavasoft. Once again I uninstalled adaware AE.
Next suggestions please! (P.S. my business is testing and evaluating graphic software so I am used to this type of task). Thanks for the help.

Can you please navigate to C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\ and verify that you have a file called AAWService.exe.

Any further suggestions? I keep asking this question but get no response. Can we get an older version to download until this problem is repaired? Or is the only solution to purchase one of the products? There are plenty of views on this topic so I assume many have the same problem.
Thanks.

Hi birdog12,
Try right clicking the aawservice.exe file and run as administrator. Then see if ad-aware will load.
As for older versions, you might still be able to find some on official lavasoft mirrors (however, we're not really supposed to give out the links here). The mirror list though is here:
http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php and then click more download locations.

ok birdog,
It is possible that someting is preventing the service from loading, as such I'd like you to post a HJT log, as instructed in my signature, in the HJT forum. Explain the situation and link to here. Hopefully, someone in there will be able to help remove any malware. If you're system is clean then come back - or if it gets cleaned and you still have the same problem then again come back,
Casey
