Hi
---
How long should take a "Smart Scan" and "Full Scan" on a "light", "standard" and "heavy" PC.

please avoid answers like: "every PC is a different case".

I'm looking for some general numbers.

If my question is not clear please ignore it.

Thank you.
casey_boy
hi,

Of course that's the answer everyone will give you as it really does! But this page might help you a bit: http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_comp..._comparison.php which says that scan time is ~380s

what sort of computer do you have how big is the harddrive how fragmented is it?

what other software do you have running virus etc
BoazBoaz
I'm not asking about my PC............

My GENERAL question ... again:

"How long should take a "Smart Scan" and "Full Scan" on a "light", "standard" and "heavy" PC."

You are welcome to define "light", "standard" and "heavy" AS YOU LIKE.

If my question is not clear please ignore it.

Waiting.

I started a scan and it was at the 1 hr and 45 minute and I canceled the balance.
Seems to be taking longer than the earlier version (7).
My hard drive is 37g and 14 free.
There is also no way to schedule a scan.
Does anyone know how to do a scehuled scan on this AE version?

Edit
Note: That I was doing a Full scan not the Quickie
BoazBoaz
Thank you jl123.

Waiting for more answers.

Hi

How long should take a "Smart Scan" and "Full Scan" on a "light", "standard" and "heavy" PC.

I ran the full scan this morning and left it running. After 4 hours and 47 minutes it finished.
This on Windows XP

BoazBoaz
My Results:
Windows XP SP3

Scan profile name: Full Scan
Objects scanned: 282871 (Data taken form the tool log)
Duration: 5 hours and 10 minutes.

Scan profile name: Smart Scan
Objects scanned: 22323 (Data taken form the tool log)
Duration: 8 minutes.

More results will be welcomed
alananne
I ran Smart Scan this morning and it took 6 minutes 31 seconds but much much longer to process the deletion of the 20 cookies than the old versions of the program
jl123
Here is an update on my scans.
Had to run Full scan overnight. Takes a long time.

Scan Full mode Objects scanned 102847
Scan Time 2:46:52 Objects Detected 55

Scan Smart mode Objects scanned 21910
Scan Time 0:20:54 Objects Detected 11

Windows XP SP3
ZoneAlarm
AVG
BoazBoaz
Thank you jl123.

If we will get some more timing results from other users we will be able to give some statistic.

More users are welcome to provide their result in the following format:

Scan Full mode
Objects scanned xxxxxxx
Scan Time HH:MM:SS

Scan Smart mode
Objects scanned yyyyy
Scan Time HH:MM:SS

I know that the "Objects scanned" is not the only element that effect the timing. No need to comment about it.
The test is not scientific but it give some idea about the timing.

I'm still using version 2007 (free version), and I never do full scans, but the smart scan takes about 20 to 25 minutes.

I'm using XP/SP1 and have about 50 programs. I imagine it takes quite a bit longer because of all my programs.

BoazBoaz, the reason you were aksed about your PC was to help us determine if anything would slow down the scan speed, not because we misdunerstood it.

Putting more and more number (duration tests) will be helpful to my topic and for everybody looking at my topic (and there lots of them).

Thank you.

smart scan normally takes me less than 10 mins. it just depends

Thank you for your input.

Still looking for more "Full mode Scan" duration inputs.

I have just installed Ad-Aware AE; XP SP3 HE; full scan on Ad-Aware 2008 averaged about 38 minutes, varying up to a minute or two either way depending on the phase of the moon and other astrological data.

AE ran a Smart Scan in less than 5 minutes, finding no issues. Ran a "Profile Scan", basically a full scan without tracking cookies or the Hosts file, in just under 57 minutes, MUCH longer than 2008! The AE scan found seven items to be suspicious: one was a detection of an empty MRU that 2008 also found; two were false positives related to ERUNT registry backups; two were harmless left-over traces of Trend Micro Housecall; two were orphans left from a years-ago experience with Prevx. The last four items have been removed manually.

More serious to me than the time (which I find to be really excessive) is the great difficulty is using Ad-Aware AE as an on-demand scanner. I DO NOT want real-time protection, nor do I want anti-virus protection [Avira AntiVir runs very nicely] from Ad-Aware. I want just an on-demand antimalware scanner. Nothing more.

I plan to return to Ad-Aware 2008, pop-up not withstanding, or to abandon Ad-Aware altogether,

Does anyone from Lavasoft reply to the problems with their software?
The length of time to do a full scan is crazy.

Those that are doing a full scan, are you or did you leave it as is
(when you downloaded and installed it) or did you change (uncheck)
files that you do not want to scan?

Those seem to only affect what your profile scans will target, as it says "Scan Profiles Settings" at the top.

On my new Vista, a smart scan ran for 45 minutes. I hit stop, and application froze. Then my Vista Home Premium froze. Had to do hard reboot (power off manually).
Tried second time. Ran smart scan for 15 minutes. Froze again. PC froze. Hard reboot again.
Now proceeding to remove the application. I might try a reinstall later, after the bugs are out.

On my old XP machine, the AAW2007 free ran great.

Cheers.

You are correct. I had made another thread about this, but I figured I'd post in here instead.
I have been running a Full Scan now for 11 hours and 42 minutes. It has scanned just about 217000 items. It is still scanning as I post this, normally I never do anything else when it is scanning, this is the first time I have ever signed online while it was running, and signing online took a much much longer time than normal, while the program is running.
The older AdAware 2008 would usually take around 2 hours, maybe 2.5 hrs, to run a full scan; I cannot understand why it now takes 12 hours?? Am I the only one experiencing this?
As far as the other question, I didn't change anything when i downloaded and installed it, it is at all the default settings.

I have been using AdAware for a few years now, since it was Adaware SE, and have always been a great fan of it and ran it weekly. It has always kept my computer in good shape, and I have highly recommended it to many people and also use it on a few different computers. But I am absolutely baffled by the fact i am going into my 12th hour of a Full Scan with this latest version. Something seems very wrong, and I wasn't sure if it was something on my end.
kdw220
unsure.gif I'm running xp sp3, 200 gb hard drive and 2 gb of memory, with Ad-aware 2008 a full scan took 1:45 with Ad-aware AE it took 3:45. I'm leaving 2008 on my vista laptop, these times are crazy!
jb76
Just an update: the Full Scan finally finished at 12 hours and 24 minutes. It scanned 250800 items, and did find 9 objects though. However, I just don't understand why it would take 6 times longer than AdAware 2008 would for me, whereas that Full Scan would only take 2 hours or so.
jl123
Well there has been no response from anyone at Lavasoft.
I guess it is time to remove and try something else.

I check back later to see if the gets fixed.
LS Sebastian
Here's my take on this issue.

Smart Scan, detect as much as possible in the least amount of time.
Full Scan, first do a smart scan, and then go through the disk and analyze every file.

The Smart Scan is enough in 99% of the cases.
If you do a smart scan and then a full scan, the full scan will only find residues from old malware.

Of course, it's smart to run a full scan once in a while, but as I said, smart scan will cover most areas.

If you want to scan a single folder or something similar, just right click on it, and select "scan with ad-aware".

Comments: a scan with the previous version (7.1.0.12) just before installing AE scanned 206 803 files in 01:50:26 - found one MRU

The new version found three items of malware and one suspicious file (which looks worryingly like a Lavasoft file -ActiveSkinocx).

I haven't quite got the hang of this system yet - sorry if I end up with the OP's whole first post in here. I'll work out which buttons to press eventually.
BoazBoaz
When I started this topic I wasn't sure If that was my private case or ...

But Now when I see all the responds ...

I do believe that lavasoft should give an estimation of time that will help us understand if the long duration of the full scan is a bug or if that was the expected period for that scan.

Keep adding more and more "Full Scan" durations results.

Thank You All.

So far I don't know because I don't have the time to let it complete a full scan. Last night I popped it open and went to bed. I came back this morning (OVER 6 HOURS later) and it still had not finished the scan. This version is unusable for me on a full scan as I don't have 8 hours or more to have my machine down to do a scan!!

Howdy, I am like brand new to this forum duh, obviously - but in case you hadn't previously noticed but I really have read over the TOS sorta. I know, it's always required to read, know, and live The Rules and the Stickies or else. I'll try to not go too far in the or else area as I learn what is really the SOP and limits here. I didn't join this new board for a new playground, just registered so I could actually post a known problem not yet well discussed, but of course - it looks like we have to row together here, even tho not like the Cambridge teams.

I've only been about to one Full Scan on one machine as I couldn't get it to run on the other. Is there a way to check the time on the last scan so I can post my results...?

Like many others I presume, I just want to utilize the free benefits of Ad-Aware. Yes, I know that Lavasoft is not a charity organization and offers the Free program more as a marketing tool with hints to buy the upgrades; just clarifying my positions before running off at the keyboard here...

And I'll try to avoid quoting my precise thots of some of my experiences with the new Anni edition, for altho the Tos didn't prohibit cussing - I'm sure it would be not allowed for several good reasons. ohmy.gif

Can you return to the 2008 product? And is there support for it? Without definition updates, it'd quickly become impotent.

Are you still running 2007? Are the definitions updated often?

I was rather happy with 2008, but progress it part of life of course - especially with PCs & peripherals. It did seem stubborn about being stopped, even when Finished. Often had to use the Task Manager just to get it to leave the playing field.

Wow, you're a patient fellow. I always have preferred to run scans while I was away from my machine to my other actions would not compete for resources, but 12 hours. No way I would let any program run on mine for more than 4 without sounding retreat/reboot.

It's always seemed like any program including this one runs more efficiently on a freshly rebooted machine.

In addition to items scanned, Hard Drive size to be inspected, and freshly rebooting - I'm sure that time to run will vary with Ram and Processors on various machines, but I would never run it on that machine without a fresh reboot. Wow again!

I think I read somewhere that the Anni edition is supposed to use available resources and not slow down your computer which I think the 2008 obviously did, but I agree - best to left it run while away then return to check and evict results. Even 6 hours is absurd tho.

I sleep like a baby, up every couple of hours - and I can't see me keeping anything that runs longer than that. Am I the only one who feels like we're the real Betta testers? I suspect they couldn't find many for the original testing.

Which would explain why in comparison 2008 finished 2 to 4 times more quickly, since it tied your system down to do so, but something I found, which I made apparent in my thread, was that the AE's full system scanner scans roughly 375,000 less files (~80,000 vs ~460,000) than my older 2008 version. Not really much of a full system scan when you only scan 17% of the files...:\

I must admit I would prefer to have that option, rather than having the scan take that many times as long to complete (6 times as long, in my case from 2008 to AE lol).
Generally when I run scans, I leave my computer alone and let the scan run its course and not use my computer at all while it is scanning. And while I am really fond of this new upgrade, I must admit that I almost feel better with AdAware 2008, and it's significantly much less shorter scanning time.
I just really really wish there wasnt such a major increase in scanning time with this latest version of AdAware sad.gif Personally, I can't really work with a scan that takes 12 hours to complete lol I'll try it again soon, but I feel a little dubious it will make a difference.

The needed data is on screen:

Even if you do not see the data after scan finished you can give the latest data seen before scan finished.

There is also a log file ... If you select the "Export Scan Log" you will see in the log the line:

"Scan and cleaning complete: Finished correctly after 17934 seconds"
(About 5 Hours in this case.
You may use this converter http://www.unitconversion.org/time/seconds...onversion.html)

Yes, I know what the finished screen info it, but couldn't find a way to get that the day after the fact. Had never done a "Export Scan Log" before and had a lot of difficulty getting it to clck but finally did.

From my first run yesterday, on a 3 yr old HP Pavilion ze 4900 laptop XP home, SP3, with 1 gb Ram, 111 Gb Hd with 50 Gb used, 1.3 Ghz processor...
Full Scan Objects scanned: 187368 Objects detected: 19
Scan and cleaning complete: Finished correctly after 7319 seconds = 2 Hours run time.

After many failuers, I finally got AE to run on my other, similar machine with 2.12 Ghz processor...
Full Scan Objects scanned: 173069 Objects detected: 41 (hmmmm?)
Scan and cleaning complete: Finished correctly after 2 Hours run time

So these times are no bad after all. Two things I am sure that will help...
1: Boot your PC before loading to run; then
2: Go away for a few hours or more to let the program run with nothing else.

You can also change the limit to skips files larger then 1kb and the scan will take 1 second !!!

But ...

The next nasty that will be developed tomorrow will show it self as larger that size limit ... and then what ??

I expect Ad-Aware to go over ALL the elements AND still do the scan in reasonable time.

Thought I would give you my results.
The smart scan is fine and quite quick.

However both the full scan and default profile scan produce silly/unacceptable times
i.e-
Items scanned 122757 in 1hour 50min 4secs
Compare this with the approx 40min for full scan with Adaware 2008

My computer has windows XP SP3 operating system with 2.1ghz processor. 2gb RAM

Both versions normally only show 3 mru's found which are harmless so cannot see
that new version scans deeper??

Sorry Lavasoft I like to use my computer at weekends so will not do full scans etc.
until you can make speed as fast as 2008 version.
