Full Version: Malware detected--Is this file safe to remove?

I just finished running an Ad-Aware scan. The scan results showed that I had Malware and the TAI is 5, which a TAI of 5 has never been detected before with all of my previous Ad-Aware scans.

The Malware was detected in this file... C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\xzhjcqof.sys

Being that it's in the system32 file...and that it's also in the system32 "drivers" file, I'm afraid to remove it because I feel that there is a possibility that it may corrupt my system.

So after the scan, I quarantined it instead of removing it because I'm not sure what to do with it. Then I restarted my computer to see if any problem would occur, but nothing occurred. Windows loaded without a problem...but I'm not sure if not having this file in my system anymore will cause future problems or not.

So my question to you is...Is it safe to remove this file??? What should I do about this? Can someone please help me with this issue? I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance...

Best not to remove that to be safe

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Okay..I will do this.. But what do I do with the file? You said that it's best not to remove it...so should I restore it first before I do this SDFix?

No don't restore it

Just leave it where it is
