Service would not start so I carried out an uninstall but again the service fails to start.
The error I get on screen is "Error 1920 Service 'Ad-Aware 2007 Service' (aawservice) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services"
I am logged on as an administrator but the problem still exists.
I purchased a 24 month license in April 08 so did not expect this to happen.
I have not installed anything new and it was working ok yesterday.
Anyone getting something similar ????
Can Anyone Please Help?????

critcal stuff that Ad-Aware 2007 does/didn't catch...well good luck to us...later

I got the unhandled exception error too. I hoped it would resolve itself through the day yesterday but today it still remains.

When I got on the computer yesterday morning I had an auto-update from windows waiting to be installed - I assumed it was the new patch and installed that straight away. The next thing I did after re-starting my computer was open firefox which did an auto-update before it opened. Then I opened adaware and checked for updates - I successfully found and uploaded an update (this is for the free version). I got the error when I tried to run adaware.

There was another time I installed the latest windows update where I lost my connection to the internet. I wonder if maybe the windows update somehow isn't compatible with adaware? Or, perhaps after adaware updated my firewall has blocked it? I think it must be one of these things but not sure how to diagnose the problem.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
onemadredneck
this problem was caused by the last update ad-aware 2007 downloaded. in my opinion, this bug was intentionally put in that update to force an update to ad-aware 2008 to correct this issue. i believe this to be bad business practice, and as a computer tech myself, am dumping this lavasoft product and moving on to greener pastures, i advise you to do the same. we should be able to choose the product version we want to use, and not forced to update to ones we don't.

@onemadredneck, No there is no intentional anything to crash your program. That would be just silly to assume.

However, updating to Ad-Aware 2008 may well solve the problem because any bugfixes over the last year have been going into that version and not the obsolete Ad-Aware 2007. It simply works better because it is an improved build.

@John West, as a paid user you are entitled to free tech support at the Support Center.
https://secure.lavasoft.com/support/supportcenter/

There you can also obtain your license info and there may even be a download of Ad-Aware 2008 in there for you (depending on whether it is Plus or Pro). If after updating your program to 2008 and you continue to experience the problem, please feel free to contact tech support for one-to-one assistance.

@ everyone else. Please follow these steps if you getting the 1810 error

How do I resolve the "Error 1810, 1812 or 1920" problems?
Problem Description

Installation requires administrative rights.
Solution

These problems are related to not being able to start the Ad-Aware service (aawservice.exe). This usually occurs during the final part of installation or startup of the program. To resolve the problem follow the instructions below:

A) Make sure you have Admin Rights

In order to install Ad-Aware you will need to be logged in to Windows as an Administrator or have sufficient rights on your Windows user account.

Some user accounts may not have sufficient privileges. If you are unsure, contact your system Administrator or the person who has installed Windows on your computer.

B ) Try to restart the Ad-Aware Service manually

1. Close Ad-Aware
2. Go to Windows Start menu, choose 'Run...', type in 'Services.msc' and in the service window, stop Ad-Aware 2007 Service.
3. Open Ad-Aware to restart the service.

C) Use the latest installer

If neither of the above works, the Ad-Aware Service has probably been removed or blocked by 3rd party software. These programs need to be configured to trust any Ad-Aware processes or files.

1. First of all, turn off any Internet Security program temporarily, but be sure to turn them on again after you have completed the reinstallation procedure.
2. Uninstall Ad-Aware by using the “Add or Remove Programs” facility in the “Control Panel”.
3. Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from the Support Center or https://secure.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
4. Install Ad-Aware.

Sorry, I've been working on computers too long to buy into this. the simple fact of the matter is, a mini increment is downloaded that installs and stops the aawservice from starting. this company is forcing 2007 users to update to 2008 for the simple fact that it has more restrictive anti piracy capability. i've pinpointed the exact increment it downloads, and know what it does. my copy of 2007 was not pirated, and frankly couldn't stand 2008 when i downloaded and tried it. i repair and install complete network systems in an office and business environment, and troubleshoot them when they don't work for a living. after this little stunt, each and every machine i work on professionally WILL have any existing lavasoft products removed and replaced by reputable products of my choosing. my customers don't question my judgement.

LS CalamityJane
@madredneck,

No, there is no policy or end of support for the 2007 version. It may be a bug however, from what little you are saying here.
If so, then we would really appreciate it if you could contact the Support Center with details on why you had a problem after an update so they can sort it.
https://secure.lavasoft.com/support/supportcenter/

For the free users, please try the steps in the FAQ as there are some known problems with service sometimes.
This is a new bug resulting from an update to IE7 that affects Ad-Aware 2007 and we are working on a resolution. In the meantime, you can uninstall Ad-Aware 2007 and install the 2008 version which does resolve this bug.
Note: If you should encounter a problem uninstalling Ad-Aware please look for the following folder and delete it:

C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware

There is no conspiracy to force anyone to the 2008 version, paid or free.
LS CalamityJane
And as soon as I posted that I am getting word of a bug discovered in Ad-Aware 2007 after an update that the Developers and Support team are looking at. As soon as I have more information I will post it here. This apparently affects the 2007 version only and is a bug.

They think it is caused by a recent update to Internet Explorer 7.

What version of Ad-Aware 2007 and IE are you all running?
sicos30

(A) Version ID:

Ad-Aware 2007
Version 7.0.2.6 (as appeared at "Add or Remove Program",
Ad-Aware 2007 now wouldn't open)

Error message:

An unhandled exception occured at 0x7C812AEB in aawservice.exe.

Exception Code: 0xe06d7363

© This happened after a definition update on December 17 or 18.

I am using Windows XP SP3.
IE version: 7.0.5730.11IC
(I rarely use it. FireFox 3.0.4 is my default Web Browser.)

I have the same thought as User: onemadredneck 65,210 that this may
be Lavasoft's cynical tactic to force users to update to Ad-Aware 2008.
I am happy with Ad-Aware 2007. This should be a complement to Lavasoft
that users do not see the need to upgrade. Intentionally crashing
its own application is indeed a bad business practice.

I will monitor this forum awaiting the patch for Ad-Aware 2007 from
Lavesoft. If it is not forthcoming, I will uninstall Lavasoft and
move on to other vendor as well.

Just adding another couple of data points here...

At the end of November 2008 I purchased three low-end off-lease HP D530s to resell. As a normal part of beating new computers into shape, I installed AAW 2007 FREE (seen too many bad reviews of 2008 elsewhere), ran the update no problem on all three units. This was done by around December 12th.

Since I was so happy with the first three computers, I purchased five more identical units (all eight are initially identical in hardware and software) and received them December 19th.

On the first unit of the new batch, I installed AAW2007 successfully but when I tried to update, it would apparently complete the update, but then the AAW Service would crash and of course the rest of the program tumbled with it.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling four times before I finally decided to see if anyone else had had similar problems. Found this forum and found that apparently there is a bug in the updates released sometime between my first batch and my second batch of computers.

Editorially speaking, while I can sort of appreciate onemadredneck's paranoia a little bit, me thinketh that he swingeth his d*cketh too much and seems more intent on attacking the people behind the problem rather than resolving the problem itself. This is only human.

LSCalamityJane's responses seem honest and reasonable, and are certainly more restrained than mine would be.

The main reason I signed up was because everyone else seems to be using IE7 (another program I'm not fond of) and I happen to have IE6 on all these units. The AAW update worked on the 12th, and it did not work on the 22nd on absolutely identical but separate individual machines. That is all I have to offer.

Like sicos30, I have bookmarked this page and will monitor it to see what, if any, resolution comes to pass. I too will be forced to another product if this "feature" is not resolved.

If you want a copy of the crash report generated by AAW, I will be happy to send it, but I suspect that you already have a couple versions.

Ad-Aware info

installer originally downloaded Jan 19, 2008;
aaw2007.exe 20,907,376 bytes

Using FREE installation.
Ad-Aware 2007 ver 7.0.2.6
Standard (not Advanced) installation
"Main Status" screen information:
Current Version: 0043.0000
Last update: 1/7/2008 10:41:02 AM
Authenticity verfied: {green check}
Threats in detection: 153338

Before attempting updates, the "Ad-Aware 2007 Service" is set to "Automatic" and is "Started".
The path the the executable is default:
"C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exe"

After attempting to update, I get the essentially the same errors as described in previous posts, including the AAW service still set to Automatic but is Stopped.

No problem uninstalling AAW.

Specific system information (identical on four computers)

HP D530 SFF desktop
CPU: Pent4, 3GHz
RAM: 1GB

Windows XP Pro, SP3, all Windows Updates installed

No unnecessary startup programs running (I like to fine tune with msconfig).

Upon reflection, I must observe that Microsoft issued a mid-cycle Windows Update:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-078 - Critical
Security Update for Internet Explorer (960714)
Published: December 17, 2008 | Updated: December 18, 2008
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS08-078.mspx

I did *not* install that update prior to installing AAW2007 and updating AAW on my first three machines, only on the fourth machine....Hang on, I'm going to set up the fifth machine and install everything *except* IE7 and that mid-cycle update...

- -
11:52 12/24/2008 first check #4 machine AAW update to prove it still fails (with 960714 installed... (answer yes to new definitions, no to new software)...

11:54 12/24/2008 "Update complete!", but a few seconds later: "Ad-Aware 2007 Service has encountered..." blah blah. Okay, failure mode still exists.

11:56 12/24/2008 Uninstall AAW 2007 from unit#4. cold boot, verify AAW2007 successfully removed: Yes. Power down and put #4 aside.

12:18 12/24/2008 setup computer #5 basic
12:32 12/24/2008 activate windows, cold boot
12:37 12/24/2008 start upgrade from sp2 to sp3 using CD
12:53 12/24/2008 SP3 upgrade done, cold boot
12:55 12/24/2008 install all remaining critical Windows Updates *EXCEPT* IE7 and 960714 (hide these)
13:09 12/24/2008 machine should now be up-to-date for Windows except as noted. Cold boot twice.
13:14 12/24/2008 install AAW2007 identically as before:
* install wizard: NEXT
* agree to EULA: NEXT
* anyone who uses this comp: NEXT
* standard installation: NEXT
* default installation directory: NEXT
* proceed with wizard: NEXT
* (installation occurs)
* USE FREE
* "Ad-Aware 2007 has been successfully installed": FINISH
* (ver 7.0.2.6)
* check to ensure AAW2007 Service is running: "Automatic"; "Started"
* "Main Status" > "Definitions Status" same is listed above (0043.0000, etc)
* click UPDATE button
13:19 12/24/2008
* download new definitions: YES
* download new software: NO
13:21 12/24/2008
* "Update Complete" (don't click OK yet)
13:21 12/24/2008 a few seconds later, the following message:
"Ad-Aware 2007 Service has encountered a problem... " blah blah boilerplate.
* check AAW2007 Service is running: "Automatic"; "Stopped"
13:23 12/24/2008
* an "Unhandled Exception" window appears:
"aawservice.exe has unfortunately..." etc
"Exception Code: 0xe06d7363
"Client versioin: 0.734"

same as post #9 (sicos30).

Therefore I have to conclude that while there *could* still be an incompatibility problem between MS Update 960714 and AAW2007, excluding the 960714 update does not *solve* the Updating problem.

That's the best I can do for you. I'll go ahead and send the "Crash Report" after all...
