Full Version: something is wrong, blocked from lavasoft servers

I am obviously having some sort of infection. I first noticed that my antivirus mcafee stopped being able to connect to the servers for updates. Then I noticed these annoying viamax (penis enlargement) ads at nearly every site I now visit that has ads.

Strange but I think somehow anytime I visit a site with ads somehow they are overlayed by hijacked ads. Wow now we hijack ads?

I tried to get my version of ad aware to clean things up but it too is blocked from talking with the servers and downloading updates. I did download the updates on another computer though and manually transferred then to my ad aware.

Now if I do a full scan it crashes.

If I do a smart scan it crashes 50% and finds 14 malware files. Although I have tried quarantining and deleting the malware they are always found if I re run the scan. And of course I can not contact the servers for ad aware or mcafee.

I just spoke with mcafee and they suggested I pay them $80 to troubleshoot my problems. What a bunch of crooks! I will most likely be getting lavasofts antivirus w firewall now that I have discovered mcafee is just a scam.

Anyway I was hoping for some good free help with this problem so here I am

I am running win xp on an IBM thinkpad. I have an intermediate understanding of computers and concepts but do not really know where to start with this kind of thing. I was once very good with computers back when dos ruled the world.

On the bright side my penis is now 3 inches longer.... (just kidding)

Hi

Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis
* Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
Do a system scan only

* Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
* Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

Wins Server (this one is just a blank)

Well anyway thanks for your help. Please advise me of my next steps, thanks!
embdude
As I mentioned I am on vacation right now and using my brother in laws router. The infections I noted in my first post had occured prior to my vacation. I use a router at home and also several times a month at varrious hotels in north america.
Blade81
Hi

Those addresses looked ok just remember to check your router settings when you get back home. If 85.255.x.x is found reset router to factory default settings and change password to stronger one.

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
    SpywareBlaster tutorial
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    2. Click run
    3. In the dialog box, type services.msc
    4. hit enter, then locate dns client
    5. Highlight it, then double-click it.
    6. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    7. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade cool.gif

Thanks again blade!

The updates are working again for lavasoft and Mcafee.

I still feel let down by those jerks at mcafee. I use the program because it is free with my comcast high speed internet service. It has anti-virus as well as a firewall. Unfortunately it has no protection for malware. I have been using ad aware for that. I have also began using cc cleaner as well.

What are your recommendations for me going forward? Should I look for an all in one package like lavasofts anti-virus-malware-firewall or just keep up what I have and now include the recommended spyware blaster and the new for me malwarbites program?

Thanks again!
Blade81
You're welcome smile.gif

I recommend keeping those you already have and use SpywareBlaster and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware with them. After all, there's no product discovered that would protect against all possible threats.

If McAfee is free for you then it of course wouldn't hurt if you tried other free av and firewall solutions smile.gif

Good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir
Avast! and
AVG Free Antivirus

For firewall I recommend either Online Armor Free or Comodo Firewall Pro (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" and install firewall ONLY!).
embdude
Thanks again Blade.

In your advice to secure my system agnist further threats you give a guide for setting up internet explorer, I usually use firefox however. Are there similar steps that I need to take with firefox or do you think it best to stick with IE?

Thanks
Blade81
Hi

Firefox settings are set right by default but Adblock Plus and NoScript are great addons that I recommend to install smile.gif
embdude
At home now.

Here Are the settings on my home router similar but with several DNS servers. Im not really sure what these terms and numbers all mean so I will post it here and hopefully you can advise...

Physical Address 00-14-A4-6B-67-55
IP address 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
DHCP server 192.168.1.1
Lease obtained 12/4/2008
Lease expires 12/5/2008
DNS Servers 68.87.76.178
68.87.78.130
68.87.69.146

Wins Server (this one is just a blank)

Again thanks for all the help. My system is running great right now.
Blade81
