I have tried to update my ad-ware se personal software, but I keep getting a message that says "error retrieving update" after only 5% has been installed. I currently have the SE1R21027.12.2007 1.06r1 Personal edition installed. Can you help?

Thanks--Susan Gergely

hi,

I've moved this topic because SE has expired and as such so has any support for it. But some users still use it and they look in this forum.

I would however, recommend uninstalling SE and updating to the newest ad-aware version - ad-aware 2008.

You'd better tell us what operating system you're using Susan.

If you're using XP/Vista then do as Casey says and update to 2008 pronto! If not (ie 98/ME), get back to us for some alternatives!

I'm one of the tens of thousands still working within the realms of Win98/ME and looking for ways to access and download the defs.ref update files that are still being produced. Hence my username. Latest version was issued on October 24th but there's no link to download it! What are the "alternatives" mentioned by Jahiera on October 23rd?
Thanks,

You can still manually download the defs files for SE from:-

(the link is at the top right of the page)

Fine if you're using XP, but they haven't worked with 98/ME since mid May. There were many of us in your situation a few months back, and the conclusion of the debate that ensued was that the only option for up to date protection was to move on to another product (even amongst moderators!!). The 2 products that still support 98/ME that most people moved on to were:-There are a few more products out there that also support 98/ME (and quite a few bogus ones, so be careful!), but the above two appear to provide the best protection. I've been using SAS for the past few months, and it's an excellent product, although I'll probably switch back to a Lavasoft product in addition when I finally get my new machine!!

Take your pick!!

Appreciate that update, Jaheira. I can see the defs.ref now -- one just needs to scroll the blog page all the way to the right.

As for Spybot Search & Destroy, I had always used it, in addition to Ad Aware, since often times one program would find problems that the other one did not. However, S&D is also giving problems with latest updates on my older box in that it refuses to load, produces page faults, etc. and has become unusable. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. Maybe there's a conflict with something else running in the background but I have no way of knowing or finding out.

It seems that the most I can do for now is to update the defs.ref to the old Ad Aware SE and hope for the best.

If you're using ME, then it'll give an error message when you start the program. Something to do with defintions file size under 98/ME.
