1) Earlier toady, I started up Ad-Aware and updated it. The bar indicating progress stopped at about 50%. No error messages. After a long wait I quit Ad-Aware and restarted it. I tried to update again, but it told me it was up to date.

2) Then I started a full system scan. The scan completed after 1 minute, only two items was scanned.

3) Some later I again started Ad-Aware, hoping it would do a better job. I launched it, and got the "System error: 1814 has occurred". It also said "application terminates", but I had to quit Ad-Aware manually.

4) Tonight I had better luck (no idea why), Ad-Aware started and the scan worked. No infections detected.
(But I do know that I have one or two tracking cookies, however Ad-Aware did not find them. Norton Antivirus found them two days ago, and I kept them because I wanted to see if Ad-Aware would detect them.)

5) aawservice.exe is changed from automatic to manual because it's a resource hog. See this thread and post about aawservice.exe.
aawservice.exe used about 300 MB of memory during the scan, how can that be necessary?? Norton is an infamous resource hog, but even Norton does not use that amount of memory.

Windows XP.
