Ad=Aware 2008 version 7.1.0.10 has been very slow to update definitions ever since updating to the 2008 version. I had no problem in earlier versions. (FREE) any thoughts?

Thank you,

Hi,

The definitions files are getting larger now, so especially if you hit peak download times you may experience slow transfer.

Try updating at a different time of the day, see if that helps. Post back and let me know how you get on.

Thank you for the reply. I have tried varying times of day or night and I have had no success. Nothing has changed on this end except updating to the 2008 software.

Thanks...RJA

Sorry then mate, there's little else you can do.

I guess your connection isn't super fast or the server is busy when you try. Make sure you're not surfing the net at the same time as updating.

As for that, there's not much else.

Casey, I disagree. This is bug in the software (At least in the Free version) and has been reported by at least 3 other people in the support issues thread. I have the same issue. It gets between 1/2 and 3/4 done and restarts. It tries about 6 times and then just sits there. This is likely related to the recent software updates, which I just installed this evening. It caused Adaware to crash on update. To get Adaware to restart, I had to go in to the Task Manager and kill the aawservice.exe process.

I do not have a slow connection which can reach speeds in excess of 2.4Mb/s. What do I need? A dedicated 5.2Mb/s connection? 10Mb? Oh, I know, I need the Gb connection I have at work. C'mon, "I guess your connection isn't super fast", that's ridiculous!! I do not have this issue with the enormous McAfee definition files, Firebird/Thunderbird, Microsoft Windows, Real Player, Quicktime, Java, or any other software which automatically updates from the Internet. In fact, I just downloaded a 10M Firebird update tonight and did a 40M Quicktime update a couple days ago.

If what you're saying is that slow or interrupted downloads cannot continue, that IS shortsighted and unforgivable!! This has been a basic feature of network traffic since at least the 80's. Use a protocol which validates the payload and can resend a package request to continue rather than restarting the entire download. It's slightly slower, but more reliable...Networking-101. My definition files are only a couple weeks (Sep 11th) old so it shouldn't take that long to download. If the issue IS a server load problem, then they should do something about that. Don't say my connection is too slow and that I'm out of luck...that doesn't make me want to continue using the software much less buy it if this is the kind of support received.
