Ad-Aware SE recently started freezing up about 30 seconds after starting. I checked for viruses and rootkits - all negative. Then, I used CHKDSK and found no significant problems. Disabling SpySweeper did solve the problem. Restarting SpySweeper again caused the freeze, so there is an incompatablity sad.gif

Webroot and Lavasoft are both aware of incompatibilities - all's we can do now is wait for resolution.

Rab60, I suggest that you start a thread of your own, and specifically state in your title, that you do not have spysweeper. Something like "No Spysweeper, Ad-Aware freezes" for example.

Also state what build (version) you are using, when it freezes up, and any other info you could give us.

Does anyone know if Lavasoft has made any progress on the SpySweeper 5.0 compatibility issue? How close, if at all are they in resolving it?

Just curious if anyone has tried to selectively disable one or several of SpySweeper's shields and see if that allows the Ad-Aware scan to run without having to disable the whole program.

For instance, I need to disable the 'IE Security' shield to update SpywareBlaster and enable protection for newly-updated unprotected items. SpySweeper still 'Alerts' when SpyBot updates and in previous versions used to delay SpyBot from opening at all until they apparently resolved that on SpySweepers end.

Ad-Aware is certainly an indispensable tool in my 'arsenal' which regularly finds items others do not. If possible, the Mods or others 'in-the know' could give us an update or time frame for a fix from Lavasoft or Webroot for this.

Thanks in advance for your all your efforts!! Jeff

Webroot is well-aware of the conflict and are working on it - see this post (2nd page):

At the risk of beating this topic to death - I want to post the text of the poblem report that I sent to Webroot and their reply. Now, I will patiently await a fix and, in the meantime, stop Spy Sweeper for the duration of the Ad-Aware Scan.

Problem Reported to Webroot - Frank C July17 @1:59PM EST
There is a conflict between the new Spy Sweeper version 5.0.5.1286 and Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 r1. If Spy Sweeper is running when an Ad-Aware scan is executed, Ad-Aware stalls on “Running Processes.
If Spy Sweeper is stopped, Ad-Aware runs to completion.
This did NOT occur before the latest Spy Sweeper upgrade.
This has also been reported in the Lavasoft Support Forum, “Scan Freezes At Local Registry . http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?s...43&hl=freez

Problem response from Webroot Tues July 18 @5:18 PM EST
Solution:
Unfortunately, there is a conflict preventing Ad-Aware from scanning while Spy Sweeper is running. We are in communication with Lavasoft to find a solution for the issue. In the mean time, you will simply need to shut down spy sweeper when scanning with Ad-Aware. I apologize for any inconvenience.

This is the latest info that I have seen on Webroot's progress.

I don't know if this will work for everyone, but it worked on 2 desktops and 1 laptop(all Wndows XP Pro):

After right-clicking on SpySweeper icon in notification tray, click on 'Shields' , then the'Windows System' Tab, under 'Critical Shields' UNCHECK

'Memory Shield' AND 'Spy Installation Shield'....Ad-AwareScan should now run...WITHOUT having to disable

SpySweeper (the other 11 shields are still functional!). Once Ad-Aware scan has finished simply RECHECK the

boxes and close the window.

If you can verify this works for others maybe you can help to 'spread' this fix as its easier and safer than having to disable SpySweeper altogether.

I'm sure that the 'Brains' at Lavasoft already know about this, but please pass it on as apparently the functions of ONLY those TWO(2) shields are preventing the Ad-Aware scans, not the entire Spysweeper Program.

Hope This Helps! Jeff
