I just ran an Ad-Aware 2008 scan of my computer (smart scan), and it came up with about 161 infections, most of them privacy infections, 2 of them critical. I clicked remove for the privacy ones and they all got deleted. I clicked remove for the critical ones and only 1 of the 2 was removed. I tried again and it did nothing. So I closed the program and scanned it again. Same results. 2 critical, 159 privacy. All the privacy ones remove easily, but come back every time. And 1 of the critical ones deletes every time, but 1 does not. It's been making my computer incredibly slow at times.

The critical objects are:

Win32.Spyware.Acoona

Root: HKLM Path: software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\browser helper objects\{944864a5-3916-46e2-96a9-a2e84f3f1208}

Root: HKU Path: S-1-5-21-1657787144-480090216-2481180329-1007\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\ext\stats\{944864a5-3916-46e2-96a9-a2e84f3f1208}

I'm curious as to why all of them keep returning after being deleted. Does anyone know how to resolve that? This is also my first time posting on a virus help forum, so I'm new to the procedures and ettiquette of how to do things, so please be gentle smile.gif. Thanks.

Here's my HijackThis log by the way:

It maybe that Spybot S&D is keeping them from being removed.

While both Teatimer and SpyBot are closed:
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer from restoring them upon reactivation).

http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Alternate link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonn...setTeaTimer.bat

Right click and save link as
Save it as resetteatimer.bat
Save it to your Desktop

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

Double click on resetteatimer.bat and wait for it to finish

Since it will not be needed again, delete ResetTeaTimer.bat after you run it.
When we are COMPLETELY finished with ALL your fixes, you can turn Teatimer back on again via SpyBot's tools resident page.

Rightclick on an empty space on your desktop and choose New > Folder
Name it HijackThis (HJT, or something similar)
Rightclick HijackThis.exe, choose Cut.
Doubleclick (to open) the folder you created.
Rightclick inside and choose Paste.

Once done ->> Rerun AdAware and see if that solves your problem

OK, so I did everything as instructed, but all it did was get me down to 154 total infections this time instead of 161. 2 are still critical (only one deletes), and the other 152 are privacy infections.

BUT, after seeing those results, I went opened Spybot back up, Teatimer was checked, so I unchecked it, but I didn't restart the computer, I ran the resetteatimer.bat program, then I did another scan with AdAware. This time I only got 5 infections total, 1 critical (does not delete), 4 privacy (all delete). But I'm afraid once I turn teatimer back on, all the other ones will show back up.

If you ran the reset .bat file they shouldn't.

Turn Tea Timer back on and let's see. wink.gif

Reply with the results and a fresh Hijackthis log.

The critical infection has been resolved, at least for now. However, the privacy infections (all tracking cookies) still keep coming back. This time I got 149 of them.

Here's a fresh HijackThis report as requested:

Post one of those privacy infections in your reply. I want to see what it is finding

AnthonyD1987
OK, I just did a scan that had 157 privacy infections (none critical). Here's a few of the privacy ones:

It's odd that you would collect that many cookies in such a short period of time. Did you delete them and confirm they were gone before you got back on IE?

Let's do this;

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

This will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. please move them to a different directory first.
AnthonyD1987
I've managed to get it down to about 25 or so privacy infections. I had to manually delete all the Firefox cookies in the internet options, but there are still a few persistent ones that keep on showing back up. They all delete after the scan, but they all come back on future scans. What I did was go into my cookies and under exceptions typed in the sites that I believed were all ones to be wary of and blocked them. So far so good as I haven't seen any infections pop up on the scan I'm doing. We'll see though. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. I'll be sure to come back here if I have another issue, as you have been quite helpful. Thanks again.

That's good, but we still have a little cleaning to do.

1. Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:

Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.

2. We Need to temporarily disable SpyBotS&D Tea timer so it doesn't interfere with our fix
3. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries

Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select "Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis ->> Reboot your PC ->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log

I wasn't able to do anything with AdWatch as I only have the free version of AdAware. But I did everything else as instructed. Here is a new HijackThis report:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
    Download the latest version of
    Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.u7.
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
