Using the free version and Smart Scan, at first it would run for about 2 minutes, then stop showing 0 objects scanned and "finish". After a couple of reboots it has been running for over half an hour, still inidicating "Scanning active processes" and "Waiting for scanner" for the files. Is anything happening? I am using a Dell desktop running XP Professional.

try this...
- Start/Run > type ' services.msc '> enter > locate ' Ad-Aware 2008 ' > stop > once the service has been stopped click
start.
Now try to run a full scan first ( AAW2008 has to 'learn' about your system ).
Let us know how it works.

I could not find "Ad-Aware 2008" among the services. Yikes!
Oops... looked again under "Lavasoft" and found it... Trying your suggestion.
