Hello,

My computer is apparently infected with several things, and I'm not sure where to start to clean it. Main problem: I can't access Internet unless I kill the process svshost32.exe in the Task Manager. Antiviruses detect nothing. Ad-Aware detects the Win32.Trojan.Monder, says it cleans it, but each time i run a new scan, it shows again.
Here is the HiJackThis log, and attached the Ad-Aware log (zipped).
Thanks a lot!!!

Bamajim,

Indeed I haven't fixed the problem. However, today I have not opened IE, I am using Firefox in safe mode and I can access Internet without killing the process svshost32.exe.
Here is the fresh HiJackThis log :

1. You have some interesting entries I need to see if you are fimilar with them?

They seem to be scripts installed like a System Admin would put on a networked PC.

Logoff_synchro_V2.0.vbs
C:\WINDOWS\Mesdocs_local_V16.vbs
Logon_synchro_V2.1.vbs
Com_Srv_Local_DFS_PARIS_Z.vbs

2. We need to teporarily disable Ad-Watch so it doesn't interfere with our fix

Look to see if there is the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.
If so, right click on it and choose *settings* and then under the *General Settings* Tab, turn off (red x) the option for "load Ad-Watch at Startup".
Next go to the *Status* tab in the left menu of Ad-Watch.
Turn OFF (red x) the Regshield.
Close that window when done then right-click the Ad-Watch icon once more from the system tray and choose *Close Ad-Watch*.

3. Open NotePad (not wordpad). Copy and paste the following into Notepad

File::
C:\sexy.exe
C:\c.exe
C:\WINDOWS\vpc32.INI
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svshost32.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\austinn\d.exe

Driver::
SLUNotify

Save the File as CFScript(exactly as shown no spaces) ->> Save it to your Desktop

Using the Image as a reference, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

You will be prompted to run Combofix again, Do so
Following the same rules as indicated in my first post
Then post the contents of the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your reply

Bamajim,

Since I am using the free version of AdAware, there seems to be no AdWatch running on my computer right now.
Refering to your 1st point (Admin scripts), yes indeed this is my work laptop, and it is configured so I can synchronize with the company's network each time I connect to it locally (I am right now out of the office). I don't know what scripts exactly have been installed, but the 4 scripts you mentionned seem to be totally ok (names are coherent).

I will now proceed with the 3rd point. I'll be right back.
Thanks!
nadglobtrotter

Hi Bamajim,

Everything seems to be running fine in Safe Mode :
Booting : ok (before it asked me to give my session login and password twice. Not anymore)
Firefox Safe Mode : perfect internet access.
Firefox normal : idem.
IE normal : idem.
Scan AdAware : nothing found.
Scan Symantec : nothing found.

Now I switched to Windows regular mode (not safe mode) : I already have a couple of warnings upon starting. Symantec Auto Protect window popped up and found W32.IRCBot. Says it has been suppressed.
Running AdAware right now. Will run full Symantec scan and then the HiJackThis, and I will be back to you with all the results and warnings.
nadglobtrotter
Hi Bamajim,

Sorry it's been a bit long to check everything. So, here are the results of rebooting in regular Windows mode :

Opening of the session (login/password) : ok
Startup : 2 RunDLL alerts :
" Erreur de chargement de C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfxkjhwv.dll - Module spécifié introuvable."
" Erreur de chargement de C:\WINDOWS\system32\gvadfpig.dll - Module spécifié introuvable."
(Error upon loading C:\... - Specified module impossible to find.)
+ System configuration utility opening up, saying I am working on a selective startup (do I need to change something to this?).
AdAware scan : nothing found.
Autoprotect Symantec : 8 viruses found, all in C:\Qoobox\Quarantine except for 1 in System~1\_Resto~1\RP27
I ran the full system scan without closing the Autoprotect results window and Symantec crashed, so I rebooted and ran a full system scan :

Reboot ok.
Full Symantec system scan : same 8 viruses found. Rebooting necessary to finish the cleaning, which I did.

On the 3rd startup, I launched again a full scan. The scan found no viruses :-).
FF Safe mode : ok
FFnormal : ok
IE : ok
Task manager : no svshost32.exe.
Everything seems fine!

Here attached is the Threats history (cvs file) from my Symantec antivirus. I'm sorry it is in French, tell me if you need me to translate something.

Hold off on deleting the files in Qoobox for the time being, we will deletee all of that at the last step.

Let's get rid of your boot up errors.

1. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = Liens
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [e0537509] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gvadfpig.dll",b
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BMe3604695] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfxkjhwv.dll",s
Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select "Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis ->> Reboot your PC ->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log

Good work. How's your PC running now?

Hi Bamajim,

Sorry for the delay; I'm back from vacation now and at the office again. After my last message, I opened the computer in regular mode and it found again the Trojan.Vundo virus. It required a reboot to suppress it. I did so, plus a full scan and it found nothing more. I didn't have time to go back to you since I was on my trip back to France. However, I scanned it completely this morning, and Symantec found nothing, and now I come back from lunch and the Symantec Auto-Protect has popped up a window showing the Trojan.Vundo...

So it is not gone!! It is really a tough one!
I just ran the HiJackThis again in case it helps. Here is the log. What do you suggest I do now?

The time difference will make my answers delays seem longer. Plus, I need to be working on the computer at the same time I try to fix it... Anyways we'll manage it.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Did you get the location of this? Was it perhaps in a System Restore Folder?

Please perform an Ewido Online Malware Scan
  • When a dialog box appears asking you if you would like to download and install the ewido anti-spyware online scanner please click Yes to allow the download.
  • Click on Start Scan.

Bamajim,

Indeed, the infection was on the "C:\SYSTEM~1\_RESTO~\RP29 folder. Now Symantec finds 5 Trojan.vundo, all in System Volume Information\_restore files.
Ewido scan log follows :

Those are nothing to be concerned about, and they cannot infect the PC unless that particular date is invoked using System Restore. Your Av will find and delete them over the next few days, and eventually they will fall out of the system by Windows past a certain date.

In our closing comments we will give instructions on creating a clean System Restore point anyway.

Everything else with the PC O.K.?

Bamajim,

Yes, everything else seems to be ok with the PC.

You may now remove/delete/uninstall the tools we used to clean your PC

Now that your log is clean

There are some final notes:
Lets create a clean System Restore point
    the instructions are here
Update your Anti Virus Software

Use and maintain a Firewall

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently for critical updates

Backup your Important Documents and Files on a regular basis
To a disc or a USB key, not your Hardrive
