I have had a tech remove adaware as there were missing files but, I am still unable to reinstall my mcafee security as it still detects adaware. What is going on? Are there registry keys or something else to remove?

I have spent quite abit of time over the last 2 days trying to get rid of Ad-aware 2008 (free) so that I could reinstall McAfee (which had stopped working properly.) I have tried all the suggestions on the web site, but still have the problem as you described it. McAfee rep directed me back to Lavasoft, but since I have a free version, I can't seem to get to their solutions.

Other suggestions I have tried: reinstalling 2007 and removing it as recommended, reinstalling 2008 and removing it as recommended, doing searches and deleting all found files, even deleting registry keys.

I would also be greatful for any suggestions.

Nobody's mentioned their OS - and the following from me is for XP, but here goes...

I use CCleaner for Registry cleaning of uninstallers etc. Download from http://www.ccleaner.com/

First - BACK-UP all important data...

Then, run a Check Disc: Right click onto C Drive in My Computer->Properties->Tools->Error Checking. Check both boxes - observe the pop-up->Restart your PC. Allow the Check Disc to run.

Reboot (automatic after a Check Disc scan)

Then run CCleaner through your registry. If you've never cleaned your registry, check the options one-at-a-time.

You might have to run it quite a few times...!

Finally, finish with a full Defragmentation of your HD.

Reboot. Then try a Mcafee install.

This clean-up routine has worked for me always (so far, touch wood) - but each computer is different.

Others recommend WICU ( Windows Install Clean Up Utility/ Freeware by MS ), but I've never tried it.

However, read this by Raziel. It's another avenue to explore.

I have tried both suggestion, but 1)McAfee installer still finds Ad-Aware, & 2)Nothing shows up in WICU. My OS is XP SP2. Any other thoughts???

I feel your pain, I am nearly fixed. Just need to get my anti-virus back up and running. Been online with McAfee 'bout 12 times. I use ccleaner on my XP system all the time. One website said it can sometimes see adaware as junk and remove files on you. I dunno, I will try the disk check.

I am still having issues, adaware still somewhere on my laptop. I heard there was a Mcafee patch but so far cannot find. Does anyone know what all the keywords are for adawarfe to search the regedit?

Hello, Running in to same issue on my Vista machine. Three different mcafee techs logged on to my machine, verified uninstall of ad-aware looked clean, used regedit and removed every occurence of lavasoft and ad-aware,
cleaned all temp and app data folders.... tried re-installing adaware 07 & 08 then uninstallig,cleaning reg again... but Mcafee still finds some trace of ad-aware se personal.

They say ball is in my court and that it's a lavasoft issue. I said "don't you guys even know what your install software looks at to detect presence of "incompatible software"..."

Anyhow, I can revert back to an image from a couple days ago but I had just got through a bunch of pain to get Vista SP1 installed properly which is why I uninstalled Mcafee in the first place.

I'll try a couple more days and will let you know if I find a way.
