i've been noticing firefox taking up a lot of resources recently. i've had mcafee antivirus running as long as i can remember.
yesterday weird stuff started happening, like ads popping up in new tabs in firefox, explorer taking up 100% of sys resources.
i dumped mcafee and bought adaware pro and spyware doctor. combined, they've alerted me of a couple trojans (whose names i can't recall atm). when the adaware auto monitoring service comes on, it rapidly gathers over 1000 registry edits, the vast majority of which seem to be from winlogon.exe. i did some research and found out that this is usually a virus if it's in the c:\windows folder not the c:\windows\system32 folder. the latter is my case.
the popups are coming much more frequently now and they went from just being fubar and duplicate poker related to really disgusting porn ads.
before i bought adaware this morning, the free version would not start unless i was in safemode.
