LS CalamityJane
Do you have a link for whatever "guide" you are using. I can't find this - - -> techdumpspyware removal guide

Have you also used the tool called SmitfraudFix? If so, I think you have a very old ineffective version. That tool is good but is updated frequently for new Rogues and you need to always delete the existing SmitfraudFix and download the newest verison available if you are going to run it.

There is a big fat warning about your not having the Windows Recovery Console installed. You really need to do that because removal of malware could make the use of that tool your only option to recover the system if a problem should occur. Here is a link to get the recommended Recovery console installed on your PC
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

ComboFix just took out a couple of rogue antispyware programs you had loaded. And you have one mystery file I need to examine.

Please go here to upload a suspicious file for analysis.
http://www.uploadmalware.com/

* In the email field: (email not needed) Instead, please enter your username from this forum as: yangstanator at LS

* in the Topic where file was requested field: Copy and paste the link to this thread:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=18597

* Click "Browse" on the 1. field.
Browse to the following file and click the file with your mouse, press "Open"
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\adfcoohy.dll

* In the comments, please mention that I asked you to upload this file

* Click on Send File

In case this file is a hidden file, Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files
How to Show Hidden Files Windows XP

Click Start.

Open My Computer.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.

Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.

Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Click Yes to confirm.

Click OK.

............
After you have done that - go here to get an online av scan:
* Go here: http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic, along with a new HijackThis log & a description of any remaining problems
yangstanator
okay I uploaded the file you told me to, and i tried doing the combo fix system restore console but i couldn't find my windows XP pack.
also when i go to ESET for the antivirus scanner, i press Yes and start, then the white box appears and theres a picture loading icon thing at the top left hand corner of the box, then it turns into a red x, it doesn't even give me the option to install activeX
********UPDATE***********
nevermind i tried it like 5 times, then it allowed me to install it, its running right now
yangstanator

LS CalamityJane
Good job! I see that the Eset scanner did find some additional infected files.

The one you sent me is also infected. The following steps will delete it and fix the associated registry entry.

1. Please open Notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the bold RED text below into the Notepad window

File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\adfcoohy.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\adfcoohy]

3. Save that notepad file as: CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

Click to view attachment

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:

* Combofix.txt
* A new HijackThis log.

Thank you SOO much for helping me!! I did as you said, and here is the hijack this log; below it is the combofix.

Open Hijackthis and do a *system scan only*

When it finishes, place a checkmark next to the following entry and then press the *Fix checked* button:

Looks good now smile.gif

How is your computer acting at this point?
yangstanator
I dont notice anything abnormal, but when my AVG scan runs it always has something that says
File Result/Infection Path
hosts Change C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
LS CalamityJane
I don't know what the message from AVG is saying?

Are you using a HOSTS file to block ads or malicious sites?

If not, let's reset your HOSTS file to the default to make nothing has messed with it.
If you DO use a HOSTS file, then running this tool will delete any entries you have in there.

Download HostsXpert
http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/13/

* Unzip HostXpert to your desktop
* Open up the HostXpert program.
* Make sure that the "Make Hosts Writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
* Click Create Back Up
* Then click on Restore Microsoft's Host Files
* Close the HostXpert program
