Hello:

I recently upgraded my free AdAware to Version 7.1.0.8.

In the prior version, it ran only as an on-demand service.

This newer version continues running as a service in the background, as shown in services.msc , even though automatic update of definition is set to : OFF and there is no background guard in this version.

How can I set it so that the service doesn't continue running when I'm not doing an on-demand scan?

Thanks in advance:

-Eliuri

I did some looking in some programs I have that can expand each program and the dependencies on each program. I couldnt even find services.msc, so I did some searching. This is because services.msc is an xp program that has to do with group policies and such. When you installed Adaware did you check (for anyone who uses computer). Its possible you started noticing it then. Because it made a group policy for adaware. Hope this helps.

Here are a couple of links to help you.

Thanks txnnok:

I did set it up so that All Users can use it. But since I'm the only user, that wasn't really necessary.

Might I be able to not have it run in the background, if I specify myself as the user?

"Services.msc" is merely a Run item which gives a list of all services running [in contrast to all programs running] I think you can get all that info as well via msconfig-->services

If the problem is the installation choice for "All users" I guess I can uninstall it and reinstall for current user only.

Do you have reason to think thats the cause?

Thanks again:

Hi again:

I reinstalled AdAware 2008 7.1.0.8 for the Current User only and it made no difference in terms of the AdAware service continuing to run in the background.

I'd like for it not to.

I recall a similar situation with regard to the free version of AVG AntiSpy . The remedy was a DOS-Batch file of sorts.....which turned the seervice on and off depending as to whether the program was running or not.

Anyone know of a similar approach for this AdAware version?

Thanks again:

This is a workaround, not an official solution.

If you don't want the service running in the background, then you can set the service to manual. This way it will only start when you start it. The program itself will not be able to start it.

services.msc>Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service>Right Click> Properties>Start-up type> Drop down list, select manual.

I repeat to actually then be able to run the program you will have to start the service yourself. This is done by:

services.msc>Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service>start this service (in top left corner) or right click>start.

Hope that helps

You have to close it manually, when you don't want it to run. From services.msc or task manager

Yeah this is basically the same thing smile.gif except (at least in vista) if you try to close a service in task manager you will be directed to services.msc anyway.

I have a similar problem with AVG AntiSpyware 7.5

In order to not have it runnning continuously in the background for no purpose, I was sent a batch file so that it opens via a command prompt.

Anyone here know of a similar file--or how to make one--for this version of AdAware?

Thanks again:

No I'm afraid not. The only workaround is the one I highlighted a couple of posts up. I know its more work, but it will stop the service automatically starting.

I don't recommend turning on and off the service manually. Why would you want to cripple a program and for what purpose? If the service is not running many things will not work as it depends on the service for most functions.

Linux2009, have you been turning off the service? Could this be why you are having problems with updates?

Here is important info about the service and why it is a critical part of the Ad-Aware program

This applies to the Ad-Aware 2008 as well as the 2007, since the Ad-Aware 2007 was introduced and it is still part of Ad-Aware 2008.

Why does Ad-Aware 2007 run as a service?
http://www.lavasoft.com/support/faq_aaw2007.php#15

THE AD-AWARE 2007 ARCHITECTURE

Ad-Aware 2007 consists of two main parts, the Service and the Graphical User Interface (GUI). The GUI is the part of the program a user sees and needs in order to interact with the program itself; it contains menus, buttons and other controls that are necessary for a user to run the program.

User action is passed from the GUI down to the Service, which contains the core functionality of the program. The Service executes the action, and then reports the results back to the GUI, where it is presented to the user.
What Is a Service?

Services are Windows applications that are launched at system startup and then run in the background, not visible to the user.
What is the Benefit of a Service-Based Approach to Malware Removal?

Malware that emerges today is increasingly complex, displaying wildly varying behavior and operating on many levels in the system. In order to stay a step ahead of these ever-changing security threats, an anti-spyware tool needs to be more powerful, multi-faceted and flexible than ever before.

The implementation of Ad-Aware 2007 as a Service facilitates this needed power and flexibility since a service runs with elevated rights on the system. This means that the user can work in user-mode while the Service maintains the elevated rights it needs in order to properly detect and remove malware infections.
How Does This Affect Resource Use?

During a scan, the CPU use of the Service will vary parts of the scan are labor-intensive and require a lot of processing power, which can make the computer's performance sluggish. Other parts require less computing power and have little impact on the overall performance of the system.

When the service is idle, virtually no CPU power is required, making the impact on system performance negligible.

As for memory use, the service does require a bit of memory, most of which is needed for storing the threats in the Detection Database. It is important to note, however, that when the Service is not in use, the lion's share of this memory is paged to the Swap file. In non-technical terms, this means that the hard drive is used to store data that is not currently in use, and then retrieves the data when needed, which makes the actual working memory (RAM) available for other applications.

Just as many other security products do...(a-squared, CounterSpy, SpySweeper come to mind)
Linux2009
No, that is not why.
That is because of ad-aware being buggy. I've turned off Lavasoft Ad-aware service off before and started it when I'm was about to scan AND it worked perfection then. So my problem isn't causing ad-aware service. It takes about 12 mb so I won't run it in the background. Even it is idle or not it lags more or less. But indeed it does.

It depends on the process. Not ad-aware.
