gelert, I believe yours is a different issue due to the SE is expired and manual updates on older systems.

Look at your core.aawref and under properties. What is the size of the file and the MD5 if you know how to get that

Actually, LS CalamityJane, I was making the point in the AAW 2008 Forum, that whilst SE is about to be terminated very soon for even XP users, that the issues currently being raised in the AAW 2008 Forum are very worrying...

In other words, the "Hobson's Choice" being offered by LavaSoft to SE users of updating to AAW 2008, doesn't appear terribly appealing just at the moment.

I'm hoping that AAW 2008 will be sorted out properly, before SE is finally killed-off completely.

I didn't say irreverent...it reads irrelevent - meaning SE errors not relevent to the Ad-Aware 2008 program. The thread you posted that in is one out of one million downloads of Ad-Aware 2008 last week. I removed it from that thread so as not to confuse the issue for that topic starter.

SE is already discontinued for all users - operating system doesn't matter in that regard. SE is no longer being developed nor supported. Not "soon to be" - it already IS discontinued as of Dec. 31, 2007.

The replacement for expired Ad-Aware SE is now Ad-Aware 2008 (free, plus and pro) and yes, it only runs on win2k up and is not compatible with Windows98 or ME. Those operating systems are also no longer supported by Microsoft and not getting OS updates.

The old SE method of detection no longer meets today’s malware detection needs and methods, and continuing to offer a reduced solution for Internet security is not a path that Lavasoft, the original anti-spyware company, chooses, nor does it provide a service to computer users in any manner. As a courtesy for our Ad-Aware users, we made the decision to continue to support the outdated SE version for an additional period of 8 months after the launch of the new technology that was Ad-Aware 2007 launched in June 2007 (now replaced by Ad-Aware 2008 released May 21, 2008). The distribution of these files to consumers ceased just after the new year in January 2008. That 8 months was to allow enough time to find a replacement program for Windows98 or ME, and for win2k, winxp and vista users to upgrade to then Ad-Aware 2007 (now Ad-Aware 2008)

We are continuing to develop technology that meets the standards of fighting today’s malware and cyber crime, and thus addressing the primary need among global computer users today. More to the point, SE Plus stops cookies from landing in the first place. AAW 2007 couldn't achieve this when I was using it, which is why I reverted to SE Plus. I appreciate what you say about obsolete software - but 2007 is obsolete already whilst SE is still working properly. Get 2008 running smoothly and bug-free, and I'll use it. Until then I HAVE to carry on using SE Plus...which by the way I've PAID FOR, up until Jan / Feb 2009....!

I don't know when you used Ad-Aware 2007 last or even if you have tried the 2008 but it is doing much better in detection already. See this PC Magazine review of Ad-Aware 2008

Heck if you are only using Ad-Aware to block cookies you can use your browser these days to do that! It's much more than a cookie cleaner now (actually cookies aren't even considered a threat). See what a similar product (Spybot Search and Destroy) says about cookies (very low on their priority list too)

IF you have a Plus subscription you are missing out on the extended Antivirus engine now in the 2008 version and the better rootkit detection and removal capability.

As for the problems you see already with 2008, those are very few right now, especially looking at the numbers of issues compared to the number of downloads so far (and people NOT having problems with it). Many you see in here are due to either a conflict with another security product or setting on the system or a system configuration.

MMmmm...well, as you know, I've bitten the bullet, and I've installed AAW 2008 on one PC.

1) I can't use the Extended Antivirus Engine because I already have an Anti-Virus service running on my PC, and two-into-one doesn't go...! AAW 2008 doesn't monitor or paperclip emails, so I'm forced to use another Anti-Virus program and therefore I'm forced to disable the Extended Antivirus Engine in AAW 2008. CROSS

2) Although I haven't experienced any of the OS / FireWall / AV / Anti-Spyware incompatibility issues with AAW 2008 that other posters in the '08 forum have come across, I was unlucky enough to find (within two hours of installing 2008!) a previously unreported bug in AAW 2008, which had me repairing / re-installing / re-booting for 10+ Hours yesterday. Fortunately, the bug has now been identified and reported, and action by the developers is on-going as I type. But as I feared, AAW 2008 isn't as robust as you advertised...nevertheless, I'll persevere with it. NEUTRAL

3) I can confirm however, that AdWatch on AAW 2008 is now just as effective as that of SE Plus. This was NOT the case back in July or even November of 2007 with AAW 2007, but now it seems to be much improved. TICK

For the 2008 version with extended AV engine for Plus and Pro users. It is customizable to allow for users who already have or prefer a different AV product to run realtime. You can turn it off in the settings area. If you wish to scan with Ad-Aware using the extended engine (which is giving you the option of additional AV definitions), then you would want to use the recommended practice of turning off the resident AV while scanning with Ad-Aware and using the AV engine option. It is simply additional layers of protection and you can turn it on or off as your configuration needs may vary.

Comparing SE, to 2008 is like comparing apples and oranges. Two different animals. The 2008 version is now replacing the 2007 version so it has also a very different build. All of this is to keep up with the changing face of malware today compared to the types of threats we had back in 2002 when SE was designed.

These changes in the program may not be immediately obvious to you as a long time user, especially if your PC hasn't been at risk or infected with any of the nastier types of malware Ad-Aware has been redesigned to deal with. But they are in there for your protectioin nonetheless. I think some of you are only seeing cookies and that really isn't a threat. I hope you do not have the unfotunate experience of hitting an infection with one of the newer malwares Ad-Aware has been designed to conquer. But if you do, it's much more effective than SE would be. SE is just outdated.

FYI, I don't run the older OS of Win98 / Win98ME / Win98SE.

But from what I've read on this forum, only SE1R247 works for the older OS....anything after that is knackered...!
It doesn't matter if you download and install it manually or automatically - it just will not work.

Obviously, LavaSoft have their hands-full with de-bugging AAW 2008 for those of us with newer OS - and I sympathise with them to a large extent....a load of requests for SE1R247 have arrived in my PM Mailbox from those running FREE SE, rather than a paid-for version...and as such LS aren't really getting any pennies for their work, let alone any financial incentive for pursuing the root of this problem.

I would like LavaSoft to try to solve this problem with updates past SE1R247 (13 May 2008) not working with Win98 etc.
In the meantime, I would like LavaSoft to post a download location for SE1R247, so that I don't have to keep supplying it..!

It's my personal thread, and so I'm allowed to huff-and-puff...thus, I'd also like LavaSoft to address the IMHO major GUI Issues of AAW 2008:
1) The less-than-helpful AdWatch pop-ups of AAW 2208 Plus.
2) The lack-of taskbar icon during an automated scan by AAW 2008, if certain options within AAW 2008 "Settings" are enabled / disabled.
3) The lack of AAW 2008 AdWatch functions - namely no advice of Definitions File currently installed, or no ability to open AdAware from AdWatch.
4) Irritating "blinking" function of the AdWatch taskbar icon.
5) Log File of a scan shows that personal preferences within the "Settings" options have not been honoured - almost as if some of those "Settings" buttons are nothing more than placebo's...!

BUT...AAW 2008 actually works...for me...in the main....!

As you can see from my signature, I run both SE Plus and AAW 2008 Plus...and I shall continue to do so until either:
i) SE is completely rendered useless, or...
ii) AAW 2008 becomes PERFECT...

The race is on....

I've PM'd LS Admin with my thoughts about them providing a public download location for SE1R247 and / or sorting out SE for older OS...but it's in the lap-of-the-gods I'm afraid...

Ad-Aware SE has expired. It is no longer offered, developed or supported. Ad-Aware 2008 is available for operating systems Windows 2000, XP and Vista (only)

Manual definition update files for SE are available for manual download only, however, we are aware they are not working on older operating systems Windows 98 and ME due to a bug in the now expired program Ad-Aware SE. We cannot provide older updates nor support links to offsite downloads of older updates for security reasons. It has expired and will not be developed any further. It is now time to change to the latest version of Ad-Aware as this is end of life for Ad-Aware SE (since December 31, 2007.

I'd like to make the point that, since installing SE1R253 22 May 2008, AUTOMATIC updates are working AGAIN with SE Plus on WinXP...

...see here...

However - AAW 2008 IS working, chez moi. And provided that the installation of it is a "clean" install etc, etc, then most of the "bug" issues don't seem to arise.

I never thought, 6 months ago, that I'd be typing this post. After all, I was one of the many "strong objectors" to having to give-up SE, having had a REALLY BAD experience with AAW 2007....

But now, with 2008 - OK...so I've joined the "Dark Side".

BUT, and importantly, the time between LS Jane's "line in the sand" and me "joining the Dark Side" was a 6 MONTH differential - minimum....!

AND - I still run SE Plus on two XP Pro Laptops, and probably for as long as possible or until ALL bugs are removed from AAW 2008...
...because my gf is hugely PC illiterate - and she won't understand if an "Option" ISN'T greyed-out when it should be, plus other GUI issues, etc.

As per previous posts, I can supply (but only via email), a 3,229kb+message text (3.5mb) Zip of SE1R247 13 May 2008.

But THAT Definitions File is now WELL out-of-date: SE1R247=3,229kb versus SE1R258 09 June 2008=3,678kb - and if you're serious about Infections (which you obviously are, as you're using AdAware SE), and are still running Win98 / SE / ME, then it's time to change to a different AS Program....or update to a newer OS.

Oh -and NO - I DON'T work for LavaSoft in ANY capacity....in fact, as a customer of their's (SE PLUS & 2008 PLUS), they work for me....
