Full Version: Updates stop at 5% - Error possibly FIXED...?

Since mid April, one of my PC's has failed to pick-up new definitions automatically, always stopping at 5%.

Even with new def.files manually installed, this error continued to occur.

However, today I manually installed SE1R253 22 May 2008, and ran the usual "check for updates now". To my immense surprise, instead of the recent "Error retrieving update" and the progress bar stopping at 5%, I got a nice friendly screen telling me "no updated components available"...! biggrin.gif

So is it possible that SE1R253 has fixed this bug...?

I'll only know for sure when the next definitions are released and I try an automatic download-and-install. But the signs are encouraging....!

I haven't done anything to any component in AdAware - although I was planning to over the weekend. This might have just saved me some investigation and work...YIPPEE.... happy.gif

OS: XP Pro SP3
AdAware: SE Plus, build 1.06r1
Firewall: Zone Alarm Pro
AV: AVG 7.5

You are updating an old product and am surprised it updated. Latest release of Ad-Aware is now 2008.

Hi Pierre,

Yup - I know that SE is officially dead-in-the-water, and was superceded by AAW 2007 - which itself has been superceded by AAW 2008... unsure.gif

BUT:

1) Definitions Updates are still being provided by LavaSoft for SE.
2) AAW 2007 didn't work for me as well as SE Plus works for me.
3) AAW 2008 has just been released and has the inevitable bugs inherent to a new release.
4) Support for SE will continue for as long as Business Users still have SE Pro / Enterprise /whatever globally installed across their servers. I tried to find LS Calamity Jane's post about this from earlier in the year, but that thread has unfortunately fallen off the edge of the world and into the ether - shame about that... I was proud of my Bows & Arrows / Cowboys & Indians analogy in that thread... rolleyes.gif

So for the time being, SE Plus still resides on my XP Pro. Sorry, but that's the way that it is.

Best wishes,

Gelert

No Pierre...but you gave me the idea on how to find it... wink.gif

This one..!

Quote LS Calamity Jane, post #9, dated 11th December 2007:

You WILL still be able to receive updates for the SE Enterprise for some time to come - that will NOT expire Dec 31 2007.

We will only stop supporting SE Personal at the new year.

Plus and Professional users (and hence also Enterprise customers) will still be able to retrieve definition updates.

*edit* link corrected to original thread, rather than via a superfluous thread...

I can CONFIRM that the "Updates stop at 5%" problem has left the building - as far as my errant laptop is concerned.... HOORAY. cool.gif

Today I picked-up SE1R254 (27 May 2008) by just clicking on the "Check for updates now" icon and following the old standard procedure.

The new Defs.file downloaded and installed itself, and AdWatch updated itself as well...no more MANUAL updating chez Gelert...! happy.gif

AdWatch with the new Defs still stops cookies, and the scan ran without problems (although it didn't find anything because AdWatch is SO efficient...!).

So if new Defs. for AdAware SE Plus on WinXP can create and then repair a problem, maybe there's hope for the Win98 SE users out there...? Fingers crossed for you guys... wink.gif

SE1R255 29May2008 also downloads, catches cookies, and runs on SE Plus WinXP.

It didn't find anything to remove, again due to AdWatch efficiency.

Confirmed by scanning with SpyBot S&D afterwards, and that too found nothing...

Just one hiccup - SE1R255 took quite a while to download and install (3,543kb), but it took a while on AAW 2008 as well...so probably traffic, but don't panic when the program seems to stall...
