Full Version: SE1R247 Update Is Corrupted
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Ad-Aware SE Resolved/Inactive Issues
Werewolfking
I downloaded the SE1R247 release, May 13, 2008 def file, for the SE version today from the security blog, unzipped and installed it, and found that it was corrupted. I got an error message when I tried to open Ad-Adware. Repeated procedure and got the same error. Solution: reinstalled last weeks def file and found the program works.

It seems that Lavasoft didn't troubleshoot this week's def file. Hope next week's def file works. mad.gif

Welcome to the Lavasoft Support Forum

If you are using Ad-Aware SE, it has expired. The latest version is Ad-Aware 2007. If not, then please post your version of Ad-Aware, along with any errors you are receiving.
Binder3
I have the same problem. After installing the update, I got an error screen that would not instantly close. I rebooted my computer and tried to access my home page, but all the screen does is click, click, click, click and then it says webpage unavailable. Unistalling Adaware 2007 does not fix the problem so my guess the install corrupted a file within Internet Explorer or tagged my Home Page as invalid. I managed on one of my computers to get my home page to load so I know the site is valid. Its just that the other 4 computers are still screwed up..
SpySentinel
Do you have a copy of what the error screen said?

Sorry mate, but I guess you haven't heard that by popular demand, Lavasoft is still supporting Ad-Aware SE. You have to download the def updates from the security blog and then unzip and install the defs. Bloody inconvenient, but it seems to work and has been that way since SE support was "discontinued". But, not this week!
Alberto Maria
What I find is slightly different: the update works (I mean: apparently), but it doesn't track tracking cookies and it doesn't neither block nor delete them. mad.gif

Backed up to previous update which works ok.

Btw: AD Aware SE Plus is way better than 2007 IMHO

I am aware of this. However, it will soon be disconintued entirely; Ad-Aware 2008 is out in beta, and it is coming along really well, and will soon be relaesed, although there is no set date yet.

Ok, but why does Lavasoft upload a file that is corrupted, I am referring to SE1R249 15.05.2008

Which program are you updating?

Are you downloading the zip file manually and extracting it to the AdAware folder after renaming the current def file to old.def.

This usually works for me, and was ok on the previous def which was SE1R247 13.05.2008, but not this current one SE1R249 15.05.2008.

This has happened before, and I had to wait till the next update, and I normally found that it would be ok then, so I will need to wait for a future update after the 15.05.2008

I'm running SE Plus on three PC's. Two of them are still able to download and install automatically.

But one has automatic download issues (see other thread) and so I download & install manually on this one. I keep ALL of the manual downloads (since 28th April 2008) and I don't swap-out the defs.ref.old file, which is still probably 23rd April-ish.

On all three PC's, AdWatch has been working fine on both SE1R247 and SE1R249. (What happened to SE1R248? Did I blink and miss it? LOL)
Scans by both SE Plus AND Spybot S&D on all three PC's have found nothing to remove....just the usual MRU's.

Wierd.

Automatic download-and-install works fine on one of my PC's (as per usual).

Manual Download AND REBOOT works fine on the errant lappy (as usual).

I can't get to the other Lappy that normally works fine on Auto-download-&-Install just at the moment....Mrs. Gelert is looking at her emails - LOL!

Both are showing SE1R250 15.05.2008 loaded successfully in AdWatch.

Both are stopping the http://www.autosport.com/ cookies....

Hooray - a'hem - sorry...!

I mean it's all well & good for those who live & breathe this stuff to talk about how easy it is to do these things, but if it's so easy then why can't the profis make it easy for the uncybered masses?

No, it's not an ISP issue, but thanks anyway.

I am able to download and extract the file, but when I start the program I get that error message.

Me thinks that Lavsoft have noticed the trick way to get this updated for users of the old AdAware S.E, and they may have added something to the files now that will stop the old program from working.

One thing I forgot to mention is I use 98 S.E, and that is why I am using the older release.

Not to worry tho, I also have Superantispy (SAS, and that works a treat and captures most of what Ad-Aware can do, oooops, sorry for the plug, lol

Everyone here needs to state which version of SE they're using, so we can establish if the problem is specific to that version. It seems weird that certain updates this week work for some people and not others and that no-one appears to have gotten them all to work! The number of updates also seems strange (247-251).

I'm using SE Personal, and have had no problems manually downloading def files since the end of last year. This week I tried installing both 250 and 251 and received the same error message as eagleman. Since I always keep older zipped definitions files until I know newer ones work, I still have 246 which I've reverted to.
dshell
I'm having similar problems - I've been downloading and manually loading def files [Reason: Win98SE] which worked ok until now.
I can install SE1R251 but when I try to open Ad-Aware to carry out a scan, I just get an error message to say the def file won't load. I've now re-installed SE1R247 and that works perfectly again. [I also keep old def files just in case].

I'm running XP Pro SP3 on all of the three PC's that have AAW SE Plus installed - and I have NO problems....

Yes, the current def file (15.5.2008) is corrupt and I messed up and deleted the prior def file (13.5.2008). Does anyone know if the def. file from 13.5.2008 is still available for downloading?

I run Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r1 on windows ME since 2005. I went to update the def. file and
manually downloaded the update for 15/05/08 and when I went to open the download and update
my def. files I rec'd. the message " problem updating def. files". Then I tried to open the program
to do a scan the program opened with the message " def. files have been corrupted" and could not
perform the scan. I haven't saved any of the previous updates and I deleted the corrupted Ad-Aware
file except for the original installation download with def. file # SE1R47. This def. file is OVER 1000
days old ..Is there any way to get the previous, recent, updates?? Either from Lavasoft or from
another user out there with the same problem but who saved their updates. It would be greatly appreciated it..
Thanks,
Steve

Looks like they have written something in the file that stops it from working for Windows 98.

Forgot to say that I'm also running Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06r1 under Win98SE!

I can't see why they'd victimize 98SE and ME users. If they didn't want people to continue using Ad-Aware SE they wouldn't make manual updates available...........

I think this is a case of Lavasoft not testing the definition files in question for 98SE and ME compatibility.

Aaaaah...THIS explains why you felt that a re-boot ISN'T necessary...! SE Personal doesn't use AdWatch.
SE Plus and/or Pro uses AdWatch - and any MANUAL defs.file update doesn't get picked-up by AdWatch UNTIL your PC is re-booted...!

Victimised...? unsure.gif

I run XP Pro SP3. I PAID for 2 Years support for SE Plus, supposedly lasting until 24 January 2009. AND my Licence Expiration date is 13 March 2009.

I should feel miffed already, as AAW 2007 doesn't do anything for me - AT ALL....!

Hey...whatever...AVG Free 8.0 has just been released - it's as bloated as AAW 2007 - and their forum is full of very similar comments from very similar posters. wink.gif FYI, I've just reverted to AVG 7.5, which incidently NOW has support through to 31 December 2008...!

AAW 2007 is about to be replaced by AAW 2008...allegedly!
Hopefully(?) AAW 2008 will have AdWatch...which will STOP cookies landing BEFORE, er, they, er, land...!

If there's enough interest, I can post a "You Send It" Zip of defs.file SE1R247 13.05.2007, which seems to be the last defs.file that works with Win98.

PM me...but if I get overwhelmed by Win98 users, hopefully the Mods / LS will help me out...?

Rant over...

Ciao,

Gelert.

As a fellow Win98SE user with the same problem with not being able to install SE1R252, I wonder if Lavasoft has decided to abandon us after promising to support Win98SE? It's sad that Lavasoft is doing this to us, as SpyBot S&D has announced continuing support for Win98SE. If Lavasoft is going to support Ad-Aware SE, then they need to include Win98 support.

As I said before, I can't see any reason why Lavasoft would end support for 98SE and ME users whilst still supporting updates for XP users alone.

What I think has happened is that they've introduced an incompatibility in SE1R248 and that error has been carried forward into later updates due to them not testing under 98SE or ME and NOT READING OUR POSTS highlighting there's a problem.

I, too, am a holdout user of Windows 98se. I thought the May 15 definition update was a temporary glitch, but the def update of May 20th did not resolve the problem. I'm still getting the same message as the other 98 users - "Definition files are either missing or corrupted." There may be more 98 users out there than software companies realize. Not everyone is enamored of Windows XP or Vista.

JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS THREAD, I CAN NO LONGER UPDATE THE DEFINITIONS FOR MY AA SE PERSONAL - MANUAL UPDATES FAIL JUST AS INDICATED ABOVE - AND I TOO AM RUNNING IT ON WIN98SE. ALSO, I CANNOT UPDATE THE AA TO 2007 BECAUSE AA 2007 DOES NOT RUN ON WIN98SE. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHETHER AA 2008 RUNS ON WIN98SE (BEFORE I TRY TO INSTALL IT)?? hi glnz,

No, unfortunately, ad-aware 2008 will not run on Win98 either. Lavasoft has taken the decision not to support legacy operating systems (such as Win98) and no longer supports Ad-Aware SE either.

It highly recommended that you move to another anti-malware software provider for legacy systems.

Sorry it's not the answer that you would have liked,
