Last updated 1/2/2008 definitions file SE1R210 27.12.2007 Loaded

I've never had a problem downloading updates. This problem wasn't cured by rebooting computer. What should I do?

Thanks!!!!!!

Download zip file for SE from top right hand corner in this link http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/

Unzip it and replace the old one with this one. You will have to search for the old one.

This is the usual path: C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE

Look for the file "defs.ref". This is the FILE that you need to REPLACE.

Goto http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ and click e.g. SE1R243 30.04.2008 underneath the AdAware SE Icon in the top right hand side of the screen. Don't RUN, but SAVE the file to e.g. your desktop. Then UN-zip the file to e.g. your desktop.

Delete the current "defs.ref" file in C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE. Replace with the now unpacked "Defs.ref" file.

Reboot.

Enjoy! wink.gif

PS: I've been saving all of the files (UNzipped) since I started to have download problems about a week ago. Might be a wise move on your part too?

Peter, what happens if you go to the web page and download it manually but even when you unzip it, it still won't work? I still get an error. I forget exactly what the error says but it took me so long to download it, like the file was over 2 MB and I'm on dial-up, I'm afraid to try it again.

Thanks,

Thanks Gelert, I had the same problem and I did all that you write and it works perfectly.

Read this. Following is the correct procedure. I run AAW 2008 so not sure where definition file stored. Thanks for info.

Royjean,

You need to use a program to un-zip the files...which program are you using?

If you haven't got an un-zipping program, you will need to download one. Either pay for one, or get a free one.

BUT...as you're on dial-up, please confirm what un-zipping program you are currently trying to use, and your OS, before I send you to a load of sites to obtain one that you may already have got.

Regards,

Gelert.

Hello Gelert,

I am using WinZip 7.0. It might be outdated but it's always served its purpose for what I need to unzip. I have it on both my office computer and my laptop. Up until I tried to manually unzip the def files from Lavasoft's site I've had no trouble unzipping anything. On my office computer, the last update was 3/10/08 and on my laptop the last one was 4/19/08. I run WINXP on both computers. And as I said, I am on dial-up on both too. We are talking about the same version of AdAware, right? I have the free version AdAware 2007, 7.0.2.7 that's the numbers on the window.

Thanks,
~Royjean~

Double checking (the info online is a bit ambiguous)

-- I think _automatic_ updating for SE has quit working but it's still possible to download files manually?
-- How long will you keep offering definition files for SE Professional?

I'm using Windows at work; the IT people take over a year to approve new software, and AdAwarePro 2007 hasn't yet been cleared for software conflicts -- likely 2007 will be out of date before it's even installed.
You see the problem.

So -- will you keep providing SE definition files?

You say click in the upper right hand corner to manually download new defs for the older SE AdAware

This is currently shown: SE1R243 30.04.2008

Is that correct? I can
tell my IT people they can click that link and download the 2008/April 30 definitions and install them manually

Ah - I understand the problems now...

Ms_Scarlett - you are trying to update your VERSION of AdAware SE. This means that you are trying to install AdAware 2007. Therefore you are posting in the wrong forum and on the wrong topic. Sorry.

Royjean - you are also using AdAware 2007 and not SE. Therefore you will fail to update 2007 using SE defs. Therefore you are also posting in the wrong forum and on the wrong topic. Sorry.

These two problems need to be taken to the AdAware 2007 Forum. Click here.

Hope that this helps?

Hi Hank,

Latest Definitions File is 06 May 08 (SE1R244 06.05.2008). I downloaded it today, manually onto one of my PC's and automatically onto the other two (see here), and it works fine on all 3 PC's. I can confirm that AdWatch is still stopping cookies with this new Defs.file. However, it's a larger file (3,144KB) and took a while to download on all 3 PC's.

Your IT guys will know how to un-zip and install it. Just follow my instructions earlier in this thread.
IT might have hidden the program somewhere else other than C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE, but they'll know how to locate it.
Remember - a MANUAL download requires an OS reboot!

As for how long support will continue for SE Plus or Pro, I can't comment.

Oh no it doesn't!
Once you've unzipped the new defs file into \Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE <whatever>, all you have to do is re-start the program, and it will load that defs file for use!

It's also interesting to note that the defs file has grown a meg in size over the last 4 months due to the current glut of scumware............

Hi Jaheira - you're right of course...sort of... wink.gif

However, in my experience, although AdAware SE Plus picks-up the new defs.file by simply stopping-and-restarting the program as you suggest, AdWatch doesn't...!

In fact, AdWatch seems to lose all of it's settings...! unsure.gif

It's possible that this issue MAY be caused by MY particular OS architecture and/or my Firewall / other settings. Whatever. Personally, the foolproof way that I have found to avoid this becoming a problem, is to reboot. It only takes a minute...

I haven't been monitoring the size of the def.files until I had my issue with auto-downloading in late April - it's sort-of comforting IMHO to know that the size of the database is increasing, hopefully at the same rate as the volume of malware!

But there was a problem in early April with a defective defs.file that someone picked-up on and posted here at this forum - it was spotted because the new defs.file was smaller than the preceeding ones...!

So I'm going to pay a little more attention to the relative file sizes from now on...! rolleyes.gif

It still stops on 5 % with the message "error retrieving updates". mad.gif

What is wrong?

Hi Gnert,

As I said here, "However, once a 'pooter fails to pick-up an auto-update, that's it! Updating to the latest defs and then trying an auto doesn't help."

I have no current experience of the free edition of SE, as I'm running SE PLUS.

But I'm led to believe that the manual updating of "free SE" works as described earlier in this thread.

I'm guessing that you successfully updated your SE manually, and then retried an auto-update?
Did the manual update work - i.e., does the date of your installed defs.file match that of the manual download?

Hi,

You guess right, that's what I tried to do. The manual update seems to have worked fine, the dates of the definition on the update screen became 07/05 08 after I did the manual update. I thought the defs. file would tell the program where to look for new updates and that it was not the actual update itself. Seems that I misunderstood and can go back to using the program knowing it's the latest update:)

Thank you very much for your help biggrin.gif

Still stops and refuses to update.

I did read earlier today here, LS Digger Barnes mention ISP issues. I don't believe it myself, as two of my PC's update fine, and the third doesn't - and that's all via the same ISP (Virgin Media). However, maybe try his suggestion about re-installing SE with the alleged "patch" and let us know how you get on?

Hope that this helps?

Well this stinks.

I followed the link (thanks for that!!) after uninstalling my version of SE Pro only to find out that I have to have the registration info in order to download the other version.

This is my work computer and I have NO idea what that registration info is.

I suppose I just lost AdAware . . .

Seriously, though - if I don't have the registration information I can't install the patched installation file. =( It asks for my log-in information in order to download it (what log-in information?!! lol) and won't let me bypass that.

Sorry Gelert for posting back here, but still no luck over at that other forum you sent me to. I am still stuck w/o being able to download the newest def files. Possibly - see here. BUT make sure that you have all of the necessary registration info (original email address / user name / password etc) that you used during your original purchase.

Why not just find an unzipping program? The one that I use is from http://xxx.winace.com/. I've never bothered with registration or TrialPay or whatever - I just get an annoying little pop-up telling me that my registration has been exceeded by 825 days... unsure.gif But it still works... wink.gif

Im assuming the programs smart enough to tell more than it tells me with the 5% thing. Hi Coolbiker,

Hopefully you've read through this thread already and tried the above links?

If you haven't, try them!

BUT - you will need your original Registration Info to access a fresh SE PROGRAM download, as suggested by LS Digger Barnes.
