I've found the reason why process msmsgs.exe can't be terminated.
It's because my norton antivirus has been configured to protect MSN/Windows messenger.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we at Lavasoftsupport are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. tongue.gif

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

3) Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4) Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck. biggrin.gif

It's so kind of you to help me so much.
Thank you very much!

I've read through this post carefully, having identified that I have a similar problem: IE popping up randomly, in conjunction with winXX.tmp.exe processes in c:/WINDOWS/temp.

It's not clear to me from reading the above if it was the Look2Me-Destroyer program that solved the problem, or a combination of that and something else. Was the problem of IE windows popping up resolved? I would be grateful for confirmation so that I can take the same steps.

Please post a hijackthis log in your own topic and someone should take a look at it.
One Iota
I've downloaded and run Look2Me-Destroyer since my post, and so far (a few minutes later) I've had a pop-up message from IExplorer upon navigating in explorer to the c:/windows/temp directory, the pop-up asked if I wanted to go online or work in off-line mode, as though the navigation in the file system were wrongly taken as an attempt to access the internet. (This is not something I've seen before and is perhaps unrelated. I simply closed the window.)

Otherwise, no winXX.tmp.exe files or processes have appeared but it's not always within the first few minutes of rebooting that they do appear.

Here's a HiJackThis log (not the latest which has no entries, but one from yesterday):

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 16:29:56, on 05/09/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\idd17.tmp.exe
C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

(Yesterday, the computer was seeing both winXX.tmp.exe processes and also IDD17.tmp.exe processes, one of which was captured here.)

And the Look2Me-Destroyer log from just now:

Look2Me-Destroyer V1.0.12

Scanning for infected files.....
Scan started at 06/09/2006 19:09:03

Attempting to delete infected files...

Making registry repairs.

Restoring Windows certificates.

Replaced hosts file with default windows hosts file

Restoring SeDebugPrivilege for Administrators - Succeeded

The Look2Me-Destroyer hasn't logged any file names - does this mean it didn't find anything? The sounds coming from the computer and the length of time it took to shutdown after the scan suggests to me it was quite busy.

I'll keep an eye out for problems and report them here.
