Greetings from Capetown!

I will be grateful if someone can tell me, is there something I can do to improve on situation as below, ie to get incremental update?

In AdAware forum, post June 7 2007, under topic "What’s New in Ad-Aware 2007 Free?", I read "Incremental Definition File Updates – Save precious time and resources with smaller update files resulting in faster download times."
This was confirmed by https://secure.lavasoft.com/download_and_bu...rison_chart.php ; it says incremental update is included. And I certainly appreciate this.

However, when I have the main Ad-Aware 2007 window open, and select Web Update then click Update button, I seem to get always download of the complete new Definition File, not incremental update.

I use Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, and 56k dial-up. I have ZoneAlarm and click yes when ZA says Ad-Aware wants to access internet. I installed from aaw2007.exe downloaded on 30/1/08.

Following are extracts from Ad-Aware's logs, with my comments etc in [ ]. These extracts show downloading of update taking about 15 minutes, also log entries reading "Core version is too old, major update needed".

[Ad-Aware update.log apparently relating to time/events prior to update to v55 on 1/3/08:]

Hi inschris,

Greetings from Auckland.

As far as I am aware (and you will see by the number of posts that I have made, I am not a "newbie"), this is something still being worked by the Devs.

Unfortunately, for now we all must download the full update each time that a new Defs File (or Software Upgrade) is released.

Rather than relying on clicking the "Updates" button to find out whether anything is available for download, please follow the steps described by my post in this thread, to receive email alerts:

QUOTE
I am subscribed to both the Defs Update forum and the Software Upgrades Topic, which means that I am emailed whenever a new entry is posted.

To subscribe is easy - firstly click on the link to the Defs Update section. In the right hand side to the title bar, click on "Forum Options" and select "Subscribe to this forum" and then select your email notification preference.

For the Software Updates Topic, click on "Options" in the title bar and select "Track this Topic", selecting email preferences again.

No more scanning the board for Update posts, or clicking on "Update" every time that you open AAW 2007
.

Regards,

Spike

NB: I also use the ZoneAlarm Firewall - I have given AAW 2007 permanent rights to access the internet when needed. If we can't trust the trail-blazing product in its field, who can we trust..?

Thanks, spike-nz, for helpful response as below. Keep well!

Hi Spike-NZ & inschris,

I have done what Spike-NZ suggested & subscribed to those 2 forums. I updated today as a new definition file has come out. But once Ad-Aware updates, it crashes! Ive tried it 3-4 times, and this happens every time. However, it does say current version "0061.0000", which seems to be the most uptodate one, but last update says 04/03/2008 (ie the last time it updated without crashing)

And even on the old definition file, sometimes ad-aware runs for hours and hours (ive seen it go beyond 5 hours once) and then I have to forcibly shut it down. Has this happened to anyone?

Hope to hear back soon.

I am a "newbie" on ad-aware forums.

Thanks

You found two current bugs in AAW 2007 - the incorrect Defs date is common to almost everyone (mine says 15th January). The main thing to look for is the green tick beside "Authenticity verified" just below that date. If it is there and the Defs number is correct, you're OK.

As for the program crashing on updates, that has also been happening for a while, but apparently not to everyone. Mine has for the past few months, however none of my family or friends experience it (typical laugh.gif ).

Once AAW 2007 has been closed/re-opened, it should work properly again - if you get an MS Error Reporting message, please click OK and allow it. The Devs do get info from all of those, so it is useful. This problem is being worked on, so please also keep an eye on the LS Newsletter.

Yes - try this as a possible fix. Open AAW 2007 and go to "Settings > Scanning > Scanning Options" and select the "Skip files larger..." option, lowering it to 10,000 initially (remember to save the changes).

If both Smart and Full scans complete without problems at this level, try gradually increasing it back up to say 25,000 (bear in mind, the higher that you make it, the more files that will be scanned). FYI: I have mine set at 7000 at present, as you will see from this screen shot.

Please post back with how you get on.

Spike

NB: After the Defs Update, you should also have been offered a small Software Update (still numbered 7.0.2.6 - not big enought to have a new designation). Did you get this update, described here?

Greetings, Spike and all. I noted above on 5 March 08, but now also yr seemingly contrary mention 24 March 08 in Lavasoft Support Forums > Lavasoft Product Families > Ad-Aware 2007 Final Product Release > Two Questions:

"Thats one of the improvements that I like about AAW 2007 - the availability of incremental updates. "

Do you know, is this facility now in effect? Is that perhaps one of the updates per posts by LS Tobias 14 March and/or 3 April 08, in Lavasoft Support Forums > Lavasoft Product Families > Ad-Aware 2007 Final Product Release > Product Updates?

Thanks in anticipation. Keep well

Hi inschris,

You certainly do your research before posting wink.gif

What I mean by "incremental updates" is the ability to download/install software updates each time there is a release, without having to perform the whole uninstall/reinstall procedure required by AAW SE 1.06 and prior versions.

I still have back-up disks with replacement executables going back to 2001 (when the licensed, realtime Ad-Watch module was a separately-downloaded file) - each time that a software update was released, the uninstall/download/reinstall process had to be followed.

New Defs files are different beasts and must be downloaded in their entirety - in retrospect, I should not have mentioned them above, although they don't take long to download (on my machine, before anyone jumps in to comment).

Regards,

Spike.

PS: Having tested the (beta) AAW 2008, I am even happier biggrin.gif

PPS: To avoid the new Defs "incorrect date" bug, go to "Web-Update > Settings" and de-select (red cross) "Back-up Defs File".
