Full Version: Vundo Trojan + StorageProtector Hijacking
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive HijackThis Logs
Kitwe
Appearently I was hit with a Trojan called Vundo which has placed (and continues to place) some sort of StorageProtector advertising program on my desktop. Two false icons are now on my Desktop by the name of "Help and Support Center" and "Windows Live Update". Deleting these is useless, as they immediatly reappear. My computer now runs painstakingly slow, and I get a popup every 3 minutes pretending to be a dire alert that only installing StorageProtector can resolve.
I installed Ad-Aware, ran a full scan, and removed all malicious things found. Then restarted the computer, ran another full scan, and removed the 4 new things that appeared.

Here is the Hijack Log:

I think that I have followed the requirements for correctly posting, but please forgive me if I have not, and inform me of what I need to do. I greatly appreciate help in this matter. Thank you.

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello,
Thank you for responding so quickly.
I removed the following programs, as you said: Viewpoint Manager, and Viewpoint Media Player. "Viewpoint" itself was not listed, however.

Windows XP Recovery Console seems to be already installed, as I see it as an option when the computer boots up.
I downloaded Combofix to the desktop, as the instructions said, but a warning that popped up has me extreemly frightened.

It seems to state that there is a possibilty that this process will completely kill my computer, and I'm a bit hesitant to run it. Is this warning just a precaution, or is there a possibility that it will render my computer a worthless heap of plastic? XD

miekiemoes
Hi,

It's just a warning - The warning was added there, to prevent that people would use Combofix without guidance, this indeed to frighten people smile.gif
The reason why Combofix may not be used without guidance is because it doesn't delete all infections in one sweep - so an additional script will be needed afterwards to deal with the leftovers. If people start to use it without guidance, they won't understand the logs it displays afterwards and won't know what leftovers are still present that should be deleted. smile.gif
masterx
just for note, you have enough running processes to slow down an opteron 185 CPU, and half of em are legitimate. eek, i would get a startup manager and toast at least half of them! most are apps that are running behind the scenes for no reason, shut em down unless your using them....
miekiemoes
masterx, all the running processes here are legitimate though - it's the dlls loaded under Winlogon, rundll32 and explorer/internet explorer which are malicious and should get deleted and are causing the slowdown in the first place.
So that's a first priority before disabling unnecessary start ups. wink.gif
By the way - Norton Internet Security is known to be a huge resource hog as well - but we do not recommend to disable it - otherwise this system won't be protected.
Kitwe
Thank you for putting my mind at ease. I'm just a bit paranoid, since a few years ago a "routine upgrade" wiped my entire system and I lost everything. It's a horrible feeling that makes me really think twice when I see warnings like that. hehe.

Hi,

Check and fix next leftover in HijackThis:

R3 - URLSearchHook: ScriptInocUI Class - - (no file)

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Sidenote - I see you have the Neopets and Gaia Toolbar installed. The Neopets toolbar has a questionable reputation, see here why:
http://forums.techguy.org/networking/42413...line-virus.html

The Gaia toolbar is a softomate toolbar and The dll files for their toolbars contain some spyware/adware functionality, although not all of the toolbars use this.

How are things now?
Kitwe
Things already seem to be greatly improved. Thank you.
There are just a few minor things to mention.

win32.trojandownloader.zlob was detected by AdAware at the start of all of this, and when removed, would be found immediatly again, so I quarantined it, and it no longer appears, but it is listed as a quarantined file, with no option to delete that I can find. Is that anything to worry about?

Also, my C drive icon has turned into a red X. Not a huge deal, but something I'd rather it not look like laugh.gif

And lastly, the icons (although the images are now broken) for "Help and Support Center" and "Windows Update" are still on the Desktop. I've been afraid to delete them for fear of them reinstalling themselves as they did previously and mucking up the process. Is it safe to remove them from the Desktop now?

Thank you very much.

No, there's nothing to worry here.

To fix this..

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

QUOTE
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this:
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Yes, you can remove them. They won't come back anymore smile.gif

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
