Full Version: Virus Protect 3.9 infection.......
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive HijackThis Logs
TimH
Hi Lavasoft Team,

My system was infected with this Virus Protect 3.9 malware - I have run Ad-Aware 2007 scans several times. It was able to delete many of the associated files but not all. I still have the blinking/alternating icon in the System Tray (alternating X and ?) that spews warming messages that my system is infected and I should download their SW quickly or the my system will explode. The HijackThis log file is shown below but could not load the file with the .log extension (this was an xml file) so I grabbed the txt file and uploaded this instead - hope this was correct? Appreciate any guidance to rid myself of this one.....it seems to be getting worse! Thanks again! TimH

Hello,

* Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Doubleclick SmitFraudFix to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

(Warning : running option #2 will set your desktop background blank again. But you can reapply your desktop background again afterwards

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process.

Post the log from smitfraudfix in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Hi,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

Hi! I re-ran HighjackThis and followed the instructions you outlined above. All seemed to go well - the system tray icon appears to be gone and I see no issues at this point. Please let m eknow if you want me to post anymore logs. If not then thanks for all of your help - awesome!!! TimH

Hi,

No need to post a new log because I know that the entries will be gone after you fixed them in HijackThis (unless your Adwatch replaced them back - or you didn't tell ad-watch to accept the change).

Glad I could help. smile.gif

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
