Over the past month, my Ad-Aware program hasn't updated. I click on the "update now" button, and it says either "error retrieving update" or "no updates components available." It's been a long time since it's updated, especially since updates used to come every week or so.

Hi randrew06110,

Are you still using AAW SE Personal v1.06r1?

If so, official Lavasoft support for Ad-Aware SE Personal v1.06 ended on 31st December 2007. That is why you are not able to update your SE Definitions as you were used to.

Lavasoft's new product, Ad-Aware 2007, has a Free version which is available from here or here.

The product specifications (including which OS are supported) are here: Tech Specs

Regards,

Spike

At the moment you can still get updates manually for AAW SE. See this thread and my post there about how to do it. The relevant link for the updates is given there by ike.

Greetings

This is my first time on this forum so please be patient. I also had the same problem with updating the current Ad Ware files. I assumed that my PC was corrupted so I deinstalled the Lavasoft programs to reinstall the current version. Unfortunately for me, my current version of Windows will not support the new programs. Is there anyway to access the former version of the programs before the Windows upgrade? The current Lavasoft website does not support any contact to them directly for free users. Do you have any email addresses or telephone numbers of ANY direct customer service personnel?

Any advice or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You can download the last version of Ad-Aware SE Personal here and then check for updates in the normal way. Either it will give you the last updates available before 3.12.2007, or it won't work at all. Whatever happens, go to this page and download the latest defs file via the link on the far right hand side of the page. The current defs file is SE1R217 04.02.2008.

Hello Madeline9,

Thank you for responding to my message. I was able to reload the initial version ( 1.06r1 ) of the Lavasoft Personal program. Unfortunately, when I tried to update the new file definitions from the file you referenced above, it failed stating I needed Windows 2000 or greater. I am currently running Windows 98 and had no previous problems updating my Lavasoft files until the beginning of 2008. When I attempted to perform the normal file scan it stated ' current files are 322 days old'. When I tried to update my files, I received the 'error retreiving file' error message.

How can I recapture all of the data file updates that are current through the end of December 2007 that will run on Windows 98? When I bypassed the file update option, it only scanned about one third of the files that it normally checked in 2007 and finished in less than 3 minutes vs about 15 to 20 minutes in the past.

Any ideas or advice that you have will be helpful. Again, thank you for helping and responding to my request for guidance.

Hello Lavaman456,
I'm not sure how much help I can give you as I've only ever used XP and know little about 98. However, I can suggest things you could try. Go to the 2nd link I gave above, download the latest defs file (now SE1R218 11.02.2008) and save it to your Desktop, or wherever you normally save downloaded files to. You then need to find your Ad-Aware SE Personal folder and unzip the new defs file into it, this should overwrite your old defs file and AAW SE should show the new defs when you open it. In XP, the relevant folder is found in C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware Personal, but you'll have to find the equivalent file in 98 and I can't help with that unfortunately.
Good luck!

Hello Madeline9,

Thank you for getting back to me. I followed your instructions above but now have problems with the Winzip program. I was able to download the new defs to the Ad-ware SE Personal folder but could not unzip them. It would not allow me to open the files. I deinstalled the Winzip progam and tried to download a more current version of the Winzip program but it also failed. I sent an email to the Winzip site to get help but I have not received a reply.

Are there any other compression type programs I can utilize to access the new file definitions and get them to update properly? Also, what exactly is AAW SE? Again, thank you for your time and welcome any ideas or suggestions.

Hello Lavaman456,

You could try 7-Zip, it's free and works in Windows 98. You can check it out and download it here. Maybe it'll work better for you than WinZip. You may need to uninstall WinZip before trying to use 7-Zip, but I'm not sure about that.
AAW SE is my lazy way of saying Ad-Aware SE, not so much to type!
By the way, there's now a new defs file out - SE1R219 12.02.2008.
