Full Version: Updates for Adaware SE Personal Free

I note that Adaware SE Personal Free (which I have and prefer) is said to have ended at the end of December 2007 and consequently since then on connecting for updates I get the message "No updated components available" which is to be expected. However I see that updates are still available for Ad-aware SE for manual download since then viz. SE1R211 02.01.2008 and SE1R212 07.01.2008. Will these updates continue to be available so I can keep Ad-aware SE Personal Free?

I originally posted this topic on the Ad-aware 2007 forum not realising the Ad-aware SE forum was still being used considering Ad-aware SE was supposed to have terminated in December 2007. Admin have moved my posting from there to here. That's why it may seem surplus to other postings here as I now realise from this forum that several people are raising exactly the same topic about update defs continuing but I am not sure if a member of LS staff has definitively answered it yet. I would love to carry on with Ad-aware SE Personal Free as I have done for many years.

Yes, They seem to be working just fine. I was concerned when I no longer got the updates either but went out on a limb and downloaded the next update, after copying my orginal "defs" file to another location, and it worked fine but I do not know how long that they will be available.

I'm a "newbie" to this forum & also a loyal Ad-Aware SE user(no desire to switch unless there's no option !), who's also missing the auto-update feature.

If Lavasoft have no plans to bring it back, could someone on the forum help me with instructions on how to perform a manual update. i've downloaded the latest file, but am lost on how to install it unsure.gif unsure.gif unsure.gif

Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Jim H, I'm new here too. This is how I installed the latest defs file:
On another forum it said 'Unzip the file which you have downloaded (defs.zip) to extract defs.ref and copy defs.ref to the directory where you have Ad-Aware SE installed, overwriting the existing defs.ref.'
Go to C:\Program Files and open the Lavasoft folder and copy the new file there, you will be asked if you want to replace the existing file, so click 'Yes' and that's it. When you open Ad-Aware SE it should now show 'Definitions file SE1R212 07.01.2008 Loaded'.
If you, or anyone else, use WinZip, you can right click on the downloaded zip file and drag it into the Lavasoft folder, the left click on 'Extract to here'. It'll then be the same as I said before. I've just done this myself, so I know it works! I hope this is useful to you.

Please help me ohmy.gif

where exactly can I get the updates for SE 1.06r1 huh.gif
imbart wrote e.g.: "Ad-aware SE for manual download since then viz. SE1R211 02.01.2008 and SE1R212 07.01.2008."

Note: I don't receive any emails anymore for the definition files. That means that I can only use the online update option which don't work anymore (11 days overdue def. files now).

Maybe EVEN (?) someone could send me the def.files via email.
Otherwise please tell me a LINK where to get it.

ever so thankful for help.

Hi, Madeline...

Success ! Followed your suggestions & was able to update AASE for the firsy time since Dec. 27th !

Not a fan of AA 3007 so it's great to at least have a manual option (Hope Lavasoft restores the auto-update or at least continues the manual defs)

Thanks again ! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hi Jim H,

You're very welcome, I'm glad it worked for you. I hope they keep it up too since I had a lot of problems with AAW 2007.
I was used to this method of updating because I also use another free anti-spyware program where I have to download the updates as zip files and install them the same way as I described above.

Madeline biggrin.gif
Madeline9
Hi Henriette,

You can also download the updates as a zip file from http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip and install them as I described above.

Hiya madeline9 smile.gif

thanks ever so much for the link. I tried to find it with no luck. How can I make it to a "favourite" (doesn't work) ?
It worked FINE smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif - thanks to your description.
How long do you think the "defs.zip" will be available ?

I got W2KSP4 and 6.0xx is absolutely suffiecient for me.

Ad-Aware 2007 is HUGE and very ..... please read for yourself this Link (is one of several!):
http://www.hijackthis-forum.de/showthread....7592#post147592 --> first German, scroll then English - note the links at the end!!!

What should I have done without your help .... unless uninstall Ad-Aware (still got Spybot S&D) but anyway.

You're very welcome, Henriette. I don't know how long we'll be able to get updates for Ad-Aware SE, but hopefully, it'll continue for a little while yet.
I know what you mean about AAW 2007 being huge, it's 20+MB, which is no joke when you're on dial-up like me!
Thanks for the link, it's very informative and I've bookmarked it.
If you want to add a link to the Ad-Aware SE updates, go to http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/?cat=2 and add that page to your bookmarks/favourites. You'll see the links to download updates for both versions of AAW on the right hand side of the page, just click on the one for AAW SE when a new defs file is available. smile.gif

hiya madeline9 smile.gif

thanks for the link which I now added to my favourites.
For the time being I only see " BETA0044.0000 (betaTesting)" + "Ad-Aware 2007" + "BETA0043.0000 (betaTesting) ".
I guess you mean that - IF there will be an update for "SE", latter would be called like that - right ?

I do appreciate your help more than ... [hope you know what I mean](sorry, poor English) biggrin.gif

henriette smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

P.S.: I read that Ad-Aware 2007 even got almost 50MB in "software" after installing !!!!!!!
YANKEESFAN245
THANKS A LOT this has all been very helpful I just hope they continue to make new definitions for SE , I too have been using it for many years now and if not for this form I would be installing AA2007 right mow which I am not sure of, AA SE is like a old trusted car or truck to me "if it aint' broke dont fix it" just mabey if we show enough consern they the admins will continue to the definitions for AA SE and even possiably return the auto update feature, "the squeeky wheel get's the grease" you know. wink.gif
SJesMe
I also am grateful for the info regarding updating SE's definitions file. I got a new computer recently and decided to give Ad-Aware 2007 a try. It it, to say the least, confusing compared to SE and after about a week I uninstalled it in favor of returning to good old trustyworthy SE. Of course, then I realized I wasn't getting any new definitions files.

Bummer huh.gif

hey madeline9, when I try to download "SE1R213" (beta testing) from the blog-site I only get "blog" (by rightclicking - save under). That's the only possibility I get there. I even don't know if the above def. file would be the correct one for me.
From the other link you gave me I had downloaded the "SE1R212" (Jan 7) so far.
What to do ?
Please read also my posting #13, where I asked you what to download.

There is a topic set up to vote on keeping SE. Please go vote. I would pay $10 a year to keep SE. How about you?

Hi Henriette,
Sorry I didn't reply to your post yesterday, but I couldn't get on the forum. You said:
QUOTE

Not exactly. On the page that I gave the link to, at the far right of the page it says 'Download Current Definition File' and underneath, there's a green icon saying 'Ad-Aware 2007' on one side and 'Ad-Aware SE' on the other side. Underneath that icon there are links in red for people to download the appropriate file for their program. You may have to use the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the page to be able to see this - I do. The file that you downloaded - SE1R212 is the current version. As you said yourself, SE1R213 is a beta file and, as such, you won't be able to download it yet. As far as I know, Ad-Aware SE never gave us beta files even when the program updater worked, so just be patient! When the new file is available, you'll be able to get it as you did before with SE1R212.

Ok, here is yet another thread on this subject of SE vs Ad-Aware 2007, so I'll just post again what I have said in the other two
(though I do notice some of you posting over and over in the same topics so please excuse if you have already seen this)

http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?s...ost&p=66561

I realize there is a lot of sentiment for the old SE version of Ad-Aware but frankly it is simply obsolete. It was designed back in something like 2002 when malware was much different than the malware issues we face today. It was woefully inadequate against today's newer threats and Ad-Aware 2007 has been completely redesigned from the ground up to deal with these new threats.

Take a good look at what is new depending on what version you are using:

What's New In Ad-aware 2007 Free
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=9453

What's New In Ad-aware 2007 Plus
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=9452

What's New In Ad-aware 2007 Pro
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=9452

There are many more reasons for this new version smile.gif

I'm sure that if you think about the difference in the malware scene and operating systems of today you can see why the old SE which no longer performs up to par and has been rebuilt to the new Ad-aware 2007

We don't want to have you running with an obsolete inferior product because it is outdated, when the new Ad-Aware 2007 (yes still Free, Plus and Pro) is available.

Hi Henriette,
You're very welcome. However, it looks as though it will be 'AAW 2007 take it or leave it' very soon. For me, it'll be 'leave it' for now as I have other very good programs. All the same, I'll try AAW 2007 again one day as I don't like to give up after only 1 attempt.
I don't think anyone should dismiss the new version out of hand just because they like the old one. It's when you have multiple problems that you might wonder if it's worth all the hassle as I did.
If they stop updates for AAW SE and you, or anyone else, doesn't want or can't get on with AAW 2007, there are other good, free programs available.
If, ultimately, I can't get AAW 2007 working properly, I'll just keep AAW SE as an extra scanner for whatever it already has in its database.

Hi Madeline9,

If Lavasoft will not keep on supporting SE:
I mentioned before I also got "Spybot 1.4" (still 1.4 cause 1.5 not bugfree!).
Will Spybot only be ok, if I uninstall Ad-Aware SE unsure.gif?

What other Program can I use instead - please give me a link for a real good and "simple" Program.
Gotta be for W2K and small in size!

Best regards

I've still got Spybot 1.4 too. I wouldn't recommend using only one program as it almost certainly won't find everything. I can personally recommend SUPERAntiSpyware and AVG Anti-Spyware which you can find links for here and SpywareBlaster, also shown there, is a good program for stopping spyware getting on your PC in the first place. Another good program is a-squared Free which I use too.
I don't know the sizes of any of these programs, but they won't be anywhere near as as big as AAW 2007.
Having said that, don't give up on AAW SE yet, there's an update available to SE1R213 from the link I gave before.

Kind regards,

Madeline9,

the download site doesn't show anything for SE. Anyway I clicked on SE and downloaded "defs.ref" (2.339 kB). Shows up in Ad-Aware SE as "SE1R213" - Jan 14.
Hope that was correct.
btw: when opening AA (after copying the file into AA) I got the message "your definitions are xxxxxxxxxxx days old" laugh.gif
I just wonder that there is nothing shown anymore under the green download-"thing" for SE.
What do you mean - is that supposed to be ending soon ? Well, noone knows.
APART from that: HOW can we know when a new defFile is available - unless we download it and compare the size to the latter huh.gif

Thank you ever so much for the recommendations of progs and the links.

The reason of 2000 years is the difference of dates. The year in the ref-file "08" and the right year "2008" - is 2000 years.
Update the new ref-file again. again ... all one, the definition must be [14.01.2008] ... ok?
Anyone was the def-file-date allrighte - the message (730486 days old ...) is over.

The system year-date in Windows must be "yyyy" - general of date "dd.mm.yyyy" (in german: "TT.MM.JJJJ") ... the best format for def-file.

Thanks for the advice JANeu.
I've downloaded the '14.01.2008' def-file again and re-installed it, and now everything is ok.
It appears this actual def-file has been 'modified' on 16.01.2008.
