I am having the same problem. I have installed & reinstalled this "Free" version and it does not update. I have installed this same version to my Mothers computer and she does not have this problem. I do not to find an answer on how to correct this problem. Is there an answer??? I am not about to keep uninstalling & reinstalling this software. I did not have this problem with the older version. Please help!!!

I am having the same problem too

It may be that Lavasoft has a trial period for the Free Version, after which you must buy their product or it becomes obsolete

Can one of the Moderator/Administrator help us?

PLEASE…

Hi sabachmd,
I don't think you're correct on saying that it's only free for trial period, then you have to pay for it, as far as I know it's free and not limited to time, just some of the items, such as AdWatch do not work unless you have the 'Plus' or 'Pro' versions.

In reply to bubby28,
If using ZoneAlarm, check the 'Program control' and check down for 'Update Manager' and place 2 ticks in the first bit.
This may work, as I found after doing this to mine, I was getting my definations updated, but if it's the software update,
[seperate notification pops up] you may need to disable security [Zone Alarm] temporary whilst updating software download, not forgetting to turn it back on after it's completed. I'm no expert, but the software part I did myself. following advice from this Forum.
Hope this helps.

I am not using ZoneAlarm. This is very disappointing as I never had this problem with the older version. I thank you for your help though...

Been experiencing the same problem (assuming you're 'SE Personal') - hence the visit here. With some difficulty having seen several virtually identical posts on here .... have identified that definitions files / support for SE Personal was discontinued 31st Dec 07 !! Detail here :- http://lavasoft.com/support/supportcenter/

NO...THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. MY SOFTWARE PROTECTION IS ACCEPTING LAVASOFT. ALSO MY MOM CAN UPDATE BUT I CANNOT. I HAVE INSTALLED & REINSTALLED OVER 6 TIMES NOW & IT STILL DOES NOT WORK. SEEMS LIKE I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS SOFTWARE. I HAVE NOW DELETED IT FROM MY COMPUTER UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS ANSWERED SOMEWHERE IN THIS FORUM. IF YOU CAN HELP ME AS TO WHY I AM UNABLE TO UPDATE I SURE WOULD APPRICIATE IT (SORRY ABOUT THE SPELLING).

The new version Ad-Aware 2007 free, has a seperate update manager. I am willing to bet you may have unchecked automatic updates, or update upon installing, when you first downloaded and installed the new version. Try this and see if it works (just a hunch):

Go Start --> All Programs --> Lavasoft --> Ad-Aware Update Manager

Supervise the update process and agree if it asks you do you want to download? do you want to install. Hope it works. Then try to run the program. You can then go in and change update settings how you like, and hopefully the update will make your program run better.

Take Care, Tom!

If you were using SE Personal OBV you've realized by now you can download Ad-Aware 2007 (free). If you already have it and it is still giving you trouble. DO a complete uninstall, ie uninstall program then run CCLEANER which cleans up leftovers as well as caches and temp files AND/or even run a regcleaner like errorcheck. Then shutdown wait 15 secs turn CPU back on (or restart but full is even better) and then go on and download the Adaware 2007 again. If running spybot as well a interface may pop up and ask about PD boot or PE boot change or something, check the box on the left 'Always allow' or whatever, then click the left button and allow change. You should be set. Update, set your settings and be set with Adaware bliss LOL. pz Tom Ready to puke from forum talking too much.

Thank you for the advise. I am not able to do this today (Friday) but I will tomorrow. I have removed Adaware "free" 2007 from my computer & will for the 8th time reinstall & then try the above. As far as the Auto Update it unchecked it immediately without me even touching it (same as on my mothers computer). Not sure why that happens or how to check it back to automatically update. She has no trouble with updating on hers & I really don't get why I do. Same computer & same windows updates as I have. Again, thank you & I'll try tomorrow & let you know how it went. Also I am not sure if I want to use the CCleaner (as noted below this post) as it might wipe something out that I use??

I did install & reinstall atleast 7 times now & just gave up. I am not sure about this CCleaner & do not wish to wipe out anything I use. Will it? I will also try this option. I tried everything I know how to & it still is giving me grief. Today is a busy day so I will try tomorrow (Saturday). Thank you for your help & I will let you know what happens. Did you see that it works on my Mothers computer but not mine? We have the exact computer system & the same windows updates & yet so far she is not having the update problem. Take care & I will inform you of the update.

In the free version "automatic updates" is not a feature that is available, hence the reason it remains unchecked. You should be able to get updates by using the update button however, so not sure what is blocking yours.

As for the CCleaner, I don't recommend that for anything but advanced users because the registry cleaner can do some harm if you aren't sure what you are doing and there are many items checkmarked by default that I really don't recommend you go that route. If you want to clean out your temporary internet files, cookies and other unnecessary files, it is advised to use to the Windows Disk cleanup utility which is much safer unless you are an advanced user. Here is how to do that:

Go to Start > Run and type in the box: Cleanmgr
Wait while Windows scans your system for files to delete.
Make sure these 3 are checkmarked and press *ok* to delete them.

Thank you for the response & I was pretty sure about the CCleaner deal. I don't use software/programs that I am not familiar with. I do a disk cleanup & disk defragement atleast once a week. I was scanning with Spybot & Adaware once a week but cannot use the adaware due to the problems. I had just removed it from my computer as it didn't help anyway with not updating, etc...I will however try one more time to reinstall it with the above ideas & see if it works. I just don't understand why it works on my Mothers computer & not mine. Any ideas on that one???? Can you also tell me how to add a topic to an existing topic without using the "reply" like everyone else does? I'm not a stupied person but for some reason I just can't figure this one out. Thanks again for your help...Bubby

Hello Bubby,

When you try to update are you getting the same error message each time? This one: "SSL Download Failed"

If so that means that the updater is not connecting to the internet usually. What firewall are you using? That is usually the thing that is blocking it. Maybe we can help figure it out if we know what your firewall is?

If you are getting a different error message than "SSL Download Failed", please tell us what that is.

No, you can't start a new topic in an old topic. Use the Add Reply button and not the "reply button so that you don't have the quote box from the last poster inserted into your reply each time. See below:

This is YOUR topic, Bubby please do not start another one. Use this one to keep your replies all in one topic so we can follow it.

For everyone else, if you need help please do not post here in Bubby's thread - start your own new topic

Calamity Jane,

Yes, I do get the message "SSL Download Failed" each time.

My Firewall is "Guardian" & the box is checked to accept "Adaware" so this is not the problem. My Mother has the same exact system as I do & she can update. The only difference is that she does not have Guardian Firewall like I do. I have Windows XP Media Center with SP2. Does this help any? I have tried atleast 8 times now downloading the fee adaware 2007 & continue to get the same thing. I am thankful for your help & would like to install the new version but as you see I am having problems. I also have Spybot search & destroy. Looking forward to any help you can give me. I am NOT going to do the CCleaner deal. I do use the free scan with "windows defender" at times as it is from Microsoft & I trust that they won't screw up their own softare. I guess I never noticed the "add reply" button but only the "reply" button, thanks for the help on that one. I will continue now to use that instead of the reply.

LS CalamityJane
Hi bubby,

As noted, your mother's machine without the Guardian firewall is able to install and update. So it is some setting in your firewall blocking the process.

You said you have configured it to allow Ad-Aware, do you have this file allowed to access the internet for updates:
lsupdatemanager.exe

If still no joy, try turning off your Firewall temporarily during installation (you can use the XP windows firewall in the meantime) and see it can fetch the necessary updates. There will be several as it will look for both program updates and definition file updates.
bubby28
Calamity Jane,

How do I allow this internet update or check this: lsupdatemanager.exe?? All I know is that the box next to adaware for my Guardain Firewall was checked to accept any downloads etc...I will wait for your response for the above & try again, for the last time.

Bubby
LS CalamityJane
Is this McAfee Firewall? (Guardian?)

See this post here bubby:

http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?a...ighlite=%2B5002

Try running the update manager by going to the directory here:

C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007

Find LSUpdateManager.exe and double click it.

If you get a notice from your firewall that it is trying to connect, choose *allow*

Let me know what happens

I have to agree with Cathy, I use the free ad-aware SE Personal version too, & up till now (today) I have been able to get all my updates.

Hi Calamity,
Sorry I am getting back to you so late. I just tried one more time & downloaded the Free Version & for some reason it works. I did notice that when I downloaded it on my Moms computer & the first 5 times on mine there were different updates the initial install & it didn't do it this last time I installed it, why is that? Anyway I'm just going to see how this works.

I also see that my computer does not shut down. I have to manually unplug it, which in NOT GOOD. Seems to lock up at times after installing the software (Adaware 2007 free verison). If you can help with this it would be great. I do thank you for all you help you had given me & on the behalf of others on this site.
