I have the: Ad Aware SE Personal Build 1.06r1
and have been trying to get the 'automatic' download of new definitions, but keep getting message that no downloads are available.
Are we no longer able to get these downloads? I am quite happy with the "Ad Aware SE Personal Build 1.06r1."

I also have NIS2005 and AVG-AS. If I have to delete the AdAware I now have (Ad Aware SE Personal Build 1.06r1), what would be a good replacement?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi gotaro,

Official support for AAW SE Personal was discontinued on 31st December, which is why you are getting that message.

However the SE Defs are still available for manual download as per my post here: Ad-aware SE

Spike

gotaro,
If you're not sure how to install the new defs file, have a look at my first post on this thread which describes how to do it. After you open the Lavasoft folder, you should then open the Ad--Aware SE Personal folder to replace the old defs file with the new one, I forgot to say this originally.
My apologies if you already know this! smile.gif
gotaro
Thank you both.

It is a shame that there is no more support for "AAW SE Personal." As senior citizens, we have used it for many, many years. I do wish that the Lavasoft company would have consideered us who have grown to 'love' the program and now not to be able to access the automatic downloads and possibly the discontinuing of the manual downloads in the future are hard to accept.
We were so comfortable with the program and now it is frightening to try and install and learn another program.

Can anyone suggest another anti-spy program we can use in place of AdAware SE Personal when we have to uninstall it?
As I mentioned, we already use NIS 2005 and AVG-AS and cannot afford to buy any more software; so the new program would have to be free.

Thank you for any help.

Hi gotaro,

You can find a useful page of links here (the Freeware - Shareware costs) from one of our malware experts: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/Links.html

There are a number of other reputable programs, however this list is a good starting place.

Hi gotaro,
I can recommend the following programs from personal experience:
1. Spybot - Search & Destroy*
2. SUPERAntiSpyware
3. SpywareBlaster
All of these are free, although SUPERAntiSpyware also has a paid-for version.
Another good program is a-squared Free which you might like to have a look at. Links to the other programs are given on the page linked to by Spike.
*I use Spybot S&D without Tea Timer activated as it's very intrusive and notifies you every time a change is made to your registry and other things. These are usually changes you want to make and the frequent warnings can be very irritating!
Like you, I'm a senior citizen, so I try to use free programs whenever I can. smile.gif

The replacement for Ad-Aware SE is the new version (still free) Ad-Aware 2007
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/select_your_product.php
Unless, of course, you are running Windows98 or ME, in which case the new version will not run on those systems.

Ad-Aware 2007 is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista (32bit only)

I have never had my program to finish a single scan...it freezes every time, what do we do? I paid for mine sad.gif
LS CalamityJane
Hello Beached1,

The paid version comes with free Customer Support via the Support Center:
http://www.lavasoft.com/support/supportcenter/

That is different from these forums which we provide for free users to get help and do not have access to the Support Center.

You will get one-on-one assistance from our Support Team there smile.gif

There can be different reasons for the freezing issue and they will help you troubleshoot to resolve the problem. Or you could start a new topic in the forums here and wait for someone to try to assist, but I think for your paid version you'll get quicker better help through the Support Center to which you are entitled. smile.gif

What is your operating system?

gotaro,
You could try the free version of Ad-Aware 2007 and see how you like it before getting any other programs. I had a lot of problems with it myself, but that doesn't mean that you will. I don't know what kind of Internet connection you have, but if it's dial-up, be aware that AAW 2007 is a 20+MB download.

Thanks.
I just hate adding new programs to my computer (when 'older' program is working fine - for me, at least) because I have to learn how to set it up, how to operate it, hoping it will not conflict with other programs, etc.
I've heard mostly bad reports about AdAware 2007.

#1- Would you know if AdAware 2007 (20JMB - large size) has the same settings as the AdAware SE? Or would I have go through every step again as I did when first setting up AdAware SE?

#2- Does the AdAware 2007 install over the AdAware SE, or must the AdAware SE be uninstalled first?

#3- - Is the SpyBlaster the best substitute for AdAware if I decided to get rid of it? Or are they completely different?

Hi again gotaro,

Firstly, AAW2007 is so large because unlike AAW SE which had separate executables for each version (Personal/Free, Plus & Pro), in 2007 the same executable is used for all versions with a Serial Number purchased for the Licensed versions unlocking access to the added functionality.

As to setup, yes it is different but not complicated. If there is a setting which you are not sure about, click on the Help File (the ? symbol) which is well-written. Should you encounter any difficulties, please post back - I am now subscribed to this Topic and can help you along.

QUOTE

Even though there is info at the LS Website which says that AAW2007 will uninstall the previous version, I strongly recommend that you uninstall AAW SE 1.06 (or any other version) before installing AAW 2007.

I use it as an addition, rather than as a replacement - please see this FAQ from SpywareBlaster's site (NB: the free version requires manually checking for updates, say on a weekly basis): I already have an anti-spyware program. Why do I need SpywareBlaster?

Since this is the Lavasoft forum, I won't say anymore on 3rd party software wink.gif

Thanks Madeline. What version of SpyBot do you use? I understand the new version 1.5.1.15 is BETA. I was told not to use BETA until all testing had finished.
#1- Do you have to download definitions also for SpyBot?
#2- Is it very difficult to install, set-up and work with?
#3- Can SpyBot run with Spyware Blaster, NIS, AVG-AS, WinXPsp2, (AdAware maybe)?

First, many apologies for not replying before now. I haven't been around lately, so I hope you see this!
To answer your questions:
I use version 1.5.2.20 of Spybot which is the final version and not a beta. It only came out a couple of days ago.
#1- Yes. You open the program and click on 'Search for Updates' and you'll get any that are available.
#2- No. it's very easy, although you'll have to get used to it if you've never used it before. The 'Help' menu is very useful!
#3- Yes. I have all those programs you mention and there's never been any conflict with any of them. Ad-Aware and Spybot were the first anti-spyware programs I got back in 2003 along with SpywareBlaster.

I still hope that one day I'll be able to get Ad-Aware 2007 working satisfactorily, I'll certainly be trying again before too long.

Thanks.
I notice you mention SpyBotS&D 1.5.2.20. I went to FileHippo and see release "spybotsd152.exe"
How would I know if that is the 1.5.2.20 you mentioned?

It is the right one, the only other Spybot 1.5.2 on the FileHippo site is the RC1 (Release Candidate1) version which was the last version before the final one. I actually downloaded mine from here which is one of the official download mirrors for Spybot and it is also a good site to get it from. Be careful when you're installing it to read each step thoroughly and don't enable Tea Timer unless you want a lot of irritating pop ups telling you about every change that gets made to your PC when you install new programs/software, just untick the Tea Timer box. You can always enable it later if you want to. Personally, I find the real time protection I get from Windows Defender, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard more than adequate. You can get SpywareGuard from the same site as SpywareBlaster; it does much the same as Tea Timer, is far less intrusive and it's free too. It hasn't been updated since 2004, but as it works on heuristics, apparently this isn't a problem. Windows Defender is free from M$.

Many thanks. I recently installed SpyWareBlaster after much thought. Will have to read the info about SpyBotS&D before I decide to install. New programs really scare me as I figure if I install them, I will not know how to set them up or how to use them.

I know how you feel. It's always a bit worrying when you install either a completely new version of a program you're used to or just a new, unfamiliar program. However most, if not all, programs come with a Help file which is always worth reading. If you decide to get Spybot, install while you're on-line as it downloads extra files during the installation process. When that's complete, a box will come up with various things you can do, such as back up your registry, read the tutorial and the help file and check for updates. The program installs in 'Default' mode which is best for a new user, but when you're more used to it, you can change it to 'Advanced' mode by clicking on the 'Mode' button. You can also visit their very helpful forums here if you experience any problems or have any questions, I've recently registered there myself.
In fact, it's probably a better place to go for info as this IS an Ad-Aware forum! wink.gif

Just to add to my previous reply, you'll have gathered that I don't feel comfortable advising on other programs an an Ad-Aware forum. However, if you want to send me a private message, I'll be happy to answer you. Just click on 'My Controls' at the top of the page, then on 'Compose New Message' and take it from there.
