Hope I can resolve this, I stumbled into helping a co-worker with a malicious infection. First exhibited some kind of IE Spoof window, "SpeedTest" I think was the title. I ran a battery of Ad-Aware SE (before installing the newer version) SpyBot and AVG but the pop-up problem still remains if an internet connection is present.

The only other odd thing is on startup, an error window appears "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\dnufkrpn.dll" but I can't find any reference to such a file.

Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm ready to backup his data, and nuke this Dell back to a clean OS install!

Well there isn't good news for your co-worker.

The computer is infected by the Troj/VB-DXP trojan, which has Backdoor Functionality. This can give intruders complete control of the computer, logging key strokes, stealing information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately!:

• Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
• Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
• From a clean computer, change *all* of your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure it can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

Yikes, that's worse than I would have ever expected! Here's what I'm thinking:

I already advised him to get an Install CD from Dell (If he doesn't have one, I'm not sure if they always ship with Dell machines currently) for a worst case scenario. Looks like this is just that. He's getting married Saturday & will be gone for at least a week, so I can make CD backups of his important data in that time. Is it safe for me to burn things like images, text files, basically anything in the My Documents folder? I mean, will they need to be scanned for infection before placing them back on a clean install?

The other question is, that machine was briefly connected to my home network, initially to DL SpyBot, AVG, etc. Can I post a HiJackThis log in this thread to make sure MY rig isn't infected somehow?

You can burn the files from My Documents. That's fine. Try and keep the computer offline until it is reformatted.

Post a HijackThis log from your computer and I'll have a look at it.
