My computer has been infected with spyware. I keep getting pop-ups and my desktop now has a fatal error message. I am very limited in my computer knowledge and would appreciate any help you might be able to offer. Here is my Hijack log. I hope I did this correctly!

* a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.

You succesfully disabled the McAfee Guard.

Now run this tool.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files,
click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing
Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer,
click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt

I was able to successfully complete all these tasks and my computer is running much faster – I no longer have the annoying “fatal error” message on my desktop. I am having trouble posting my logs. When I click on the “add reply” box, an email screen comes up. When I click into the box, the screen goes blank like it has timed out. I am not sure what to do. I am also getting an error message of “ Cannot find file ///c:/windows/system32/drivers/detect.htm. Make sure the path or internet address is correct”. Not sure if these issues are related??

I'm not sure why your having a problem with the uploads. But as for that file ComboFix should have gotten it not sure why it did not remove it. So let's try and work on that one file first.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.

[*]Save it to your desktop.
[*]Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
[*]Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\detect.htm

[*]Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
[*]Click the red Moveit! button.
[*]Close OTMoveIt

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please "Copy" the results from the "Results" window (to the right) and then "Paste" them into your next reply on the forum.

Here is the latest HijackThis log. Sorry about the previous attachments! The Mafee icon that is in my system tray shows "firewall disabled" & does not allow me to change the settings. I did go directly to the McAfee program and disabled the virusscan before I started the other tasks - hopefully this achieved the desired result.

Done! My computer is running sooo much better since the last combofix. The only remnant is a bright fuscia desktop background! Thank you for all your help!

First make sure you turn back on anything I may of had you disable. Now let's do some cleaning.

Start --> Run, and type Combofix /u in the box that appears. Click OK afterwards. Notice the space between the X and the /u It needs to be there.

The above procedure will:

* Delete the following:
o ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
o VundoFix backups, if present
o The C:\Deckard folder, if present
o The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
* Reset the clock settings.
* Hide file extensions, if required.
* Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
* Set a new, clean Restore Point.

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Delete... under Browsing History.
Next to Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files, and then click OK.
Next to Cookies, click Delete cookies, and then click OK.
Next to History, click Delete history, and then click OK.
Click the Close button.
Click OK.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
a. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
b. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
c . Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
d. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
e. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
f. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
g. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
h. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
