Hello, any help in removing this virus would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I've been getting this pop-up msg since last night "Your browser was hijacked by Trojan.win32.agent.akk. You need to clean your system immediately...."

I have run the Norton which says that it detected a virus, but it was unable to fix it because it was denied access. I also ran the 'Ad-Aware SE Personal', which said that it detected critical object and removed them. So I rebooted my computer, thinking that all was well once again.

However, I continue to get the Critical System Error pop up. Please take a look at my Hijack log and tell me what files I need to delete in order to stop this madness.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello.labellalowery & Welcome

First of all you did not post all of the Hijack-This log-file so I have no way of knowing what ver your using. Also when posting a log-file, don't change the look and feel of the logs. I would also like to add you have MyWebSearch installed have a look at this. Please come back here with a new Hijack-This log-file.

You have the MyWay Search Assistant installed. This is a search bar that hijacks your searches and targets them against their own site, and I highly recommend you uninstall it. If you decide to uninstall it, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove any of the following programs, if found:

My Search Bar
MyWay Speed Bar
My Web Search Bar
MyWay Search Assistant
Fun Web Products Easy Installer

==========================

Again need to see new Hijack-This log-file and don't change the look and feel of log-file.

Hi HJThis!

Thank you very much for responding to my post. Sorry about changing the look of the log. I was trying to make it easier on the eyes, and I thought that the info at the beginning of the log wasn't necessary information (which shows why I am not the expert! wink.gif )

I did as you suggested and went to the add/remove section and the only one I found was the 'myweb search', which I uninstalled. I then received a message saying that it would be completely uninstalled once I rebooted the computer; which I have yet to do because it takes F O R E V E R to do anything with this computer lately.

So as you requested, here is the unrevised Hackthis log (I’ll also attach the latest log again - JIC you need to see it).

THANK YOU!!!

Hi.labellalowery

Ok let's get this out of the way.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

========================

Once you update your Java, Do this here.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

But don't run it just Yet!

========================

WINDOWS DEFENDER

* Click Start > Programs > Windows Defender or launch from the system tray icon.
* Click on Tools & Settings > Options.
* Under Real-time protection options, uncheck the "Real-time protection" check box.
* Click Save.
* Go to Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender, at the bottom of the Window Defenders page uncheck under Administrator Options "use Windows Defender" and then Save.
* (When we are done, you can re-enable Defender using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Turn on real-time protection" check box.)

========================

Now run.

[*]Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackThis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

=========================

Come back here with the ComboFix.txt and new Hijack-This log.

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Click to view attachment

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Then come back here with both the HijackThis log and ComboFix.txt

Hi HJThis,

I’ve run into a snag. When I dragged the CFScript into ComboFix.exe, I got this error message.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\ComboFix.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Then it only gives me an ‘OK’ box to click, and when I click it, it closes the error box and nothing happens.

HJThis, I realize now that maybe I should have told you about a couple of problems that I ran into when I was following your instructions from earlier, but I thought that since I found a way to get to the end result, it wasn’t a problem. You’re probably thinking, ‘get to the point already!’ So here it is – two things:

1- Under Windows Defender – for the part where you told me to “* Go to Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender, at the bottom of the Window Defenders page uncheck under Administrator Options "use Windows Defender" and then Save.” In my control panel, there wasn’t a ‘security’. There was only a ‘security center’. When I clicked on ‘security center’, the icons that were in there were ‘internet options’ ‘automatic updates’ and ‘windows firewall’. So I went back to Windows Defender by going thru Start / Programs / Windows Defender / Tools & Settings / Options. And then I went to the bottom of the WD page and unchecked the admin options “use WD”, and then I clicked on Save.

2- Then when I went to run the combofix.exe, I double clicked on it and I received the same msg as above: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\ComboFix.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Soooo, I went back to your instructions in this thread and clicked on the link in your instructions, and instead of saving it again, I selected to run the program. And that’s how I got the log.

HJThis, where did I go wrong (besides not telling you about the problems I ran into earlier)??? unsure.gif

Hey.labellalowery

Hmm don't do this with any file it's not a good idea to run stuff. It's always best if you can to download check for Virus and so on. Now let's try something here not 100% on this one.

Start --> Run, and type Combofix /u in the box that appears. Click OK afterwards. Notice the space between the X and the /u It needs to be there. After doing this run this one here.

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Then just follow what I had posted before. And again before you run it disable WINDOWS DEFENDER.

Hi HJThis,

SUCCESS! biggrin.gif

When I tried the 'run Combofix /u' command, I got an error message saying that windows could not locate combofix on my computer. But I knew it was there because I was looking right at it on my desk top. So in an attempt to be proactive, I came back here and clicked on your link and downloaded & saved it again. This time, after it saved and asked me if I wanted to run the program I said yes.

And that's when the magic happened! It started doing......stuff. But this time, after it was done running, it rebooted my computer (which did not happen the first time) and then it gave me the log info. I proceeded to drag the 'CFScript' onto the ComboFix.exe icon (which had now changed to the red circle with the X in the middle - before it still looked like a white and blue square). And since I wanted to follow your instructions to the 'T', I went into C:ComboFix.txt, and copied the info below.

I didn't run this, 'http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe'. Do I still need to run it?

Also, I had no idea that it wasn't a good idea to run stuff instead of downloading it. I thought that it was safer to 'run', instead of taking a chance of downloading something bad. LOL! Boy did I have it backwards! Thank you for that tip HJThis.

Hi HJThis!

Yes, the PC is doing MUCH better. Explorer opens much faster (used to take about 1-2 minutes to open and load the home page), and I just realized that I AM NO LONGER GETTING THAT HIJACKED MESSAGE!!! Wooooohooooo!!!! THANK YOU HJTHIS! You ROCK! You have to know that! biggrin.gif

I did as you instructed, and had the Hijack This program remove those 5 files. Am I all fixed now??? LOL! Oh, should I reactivate the Windows Defender now?

HJThis
Hi.labellalowery

First yes I always download stuff to say a folder on my desktop. This way I can run my scans on them like say my Anti-Virus, Spware tools, and Trojan tools. But before I do any of this I first run all my updates then I may do my scans. This may seem like over kill to some. smile.gif

Now let's move on.

Start --> Run, and type Combofix /u in the box that appears. Click OK afterwards. Notice the space between the X and the /u It needs to be there.

The above procedure will:

* Delete the following:
o ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
o VundoFix backups, if present
o The C:\Deckard folder, if present
o The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
* Reset the clock settings.
* Hide file extensions, if required.
* Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
* Set a new, clean Restore Point.

===========================

For Internet Explorer 7
    Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
    On the General tab, click Delete... under Browsing History.
    Next to Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files, and then click OK.
    Next to Cookies, click Delete cookies, and then click OK.
    Next to History, click Delete history, and then click OK.
    Click the Close button.
    Click OK.

===========================

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

===========================

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
a. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
b. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
c . Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
d. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
e. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
f. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
g. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
h. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

===========================

Then report back here till me how it goes.

Hi HJThis,

Happy Monday, although it's almost Tuesday now.

I don't think running scans on the downloads is overkill. Especially in today's society, with our rapidly advancing technology - which unfortunately allows for rapidly advancing ways for people to cause problems. Like the saying goes, 'it's better to be safe, than to be sorry.'

I've removed ComboFix, deleted all of the temporary internet files, cookies, and history. And I've enabled and disabled all of the prompts under the security tab as instructed.

The computer is running fine now. And for that I am grateful!

Thank you VERY MUCH HJThis! I hope you know how much your assistance is truly appreciated! biggrin.gif

2) Download IE-Spyad | works by importing a large file of registry entries into your registry.A tutorial on it can be found here

3) Go to Windows Update | Frequently Make sure to check for the latest updates.

4) All of these great programs will not do a thing for you. If none are kept updated. So please check all of them for the latest updates.

Hi HJThis!

My last week Friday, was my last day of vacation. And of course I returned to work to a massive workload. So I haven't been about to check back into this forum since Monday night. Thank you very much for all of this additional information for protecting my computer.

Tomorrow morning, I will download (after saving to my desktop first wink.gif ) all of the programs that you have suggested. And I will be sure to visit Master Miekiemoes site.

Thank you again and have a wonderful Friday!
