I have a secondary pc still running Win 98se and working very well, but with Ad-Adware SE ending support at the end of the month I have no way of protecting it. Your new software does not list Win 98se as one of its supported platforms. So now what?

I am in the same position, and would have to download and install Spybot 1.5 as Lavasoft are leaving 98 S.E out in the cold it would seem.

I have two computers running Windows ME, what about these?

Hello all,

I won't get into a protracted debate, as eagleman has covered this subject in many posts since AAW2007 was released.

However, all I would like to point out is that if even MS no longer supports the OS that you mention (Win 98 & ME) with security updates and patches, how can a smaller malware company be expected to provide complete anti-malware support for them? Given the opportunities for re-infection of systems running un-patchable, vulnerable operating software, Lavasoft should not be held to blame for opting for the most practical technical solution. There is only so much protection that a third-part software can provide when the underlying operating system is left so vulnerable...

All very well to demand backwards-compatible support but the majority of AAW users opt for the free version (which Lavasoft has pledged to maintain) - quite simply, as a business model, it is not practical to make AAW 2007 compatible with every past release of Windows (no matter how attached a particular user is to that OS). I note that none of you are demanding continued support for Win95 and yet I personally know a number of people still doggedly sticking to that (very-outdated) platform - even you seem to acknowledge that there is a cut-off point for a particular OS.

Yes, I really liked the easy-to-use Win98SE (thank goodness, I avoided the debacle that was ME) and then only reluctantly upgraded to Win XP when MS support was discontinued. It will take a great deal of pressure to get me to upgrade to Vista - one day it will happen, and I will just have to deal with it.

Regards,

Spike

NB: Lavasoft support for AAW SE has always been flagged as ending at the end of this year - however, I have not seen anything in the forum, News or the Blog to indicate an actual cut-off date for the Plus, Pro or Enterprise versions of AAW SE as yet (only the free Personal version).

For those with 98SE (if Lavasoft will allow me to please post this) try: a-squared, just google it for a link i run it on my son's 98se Good luck and we all should thank Lavasoft for even having a free program to help us.

Try checking out the page above. It lists all the best free utilities out there, including spyware checkers. I'm pretty sure it's legit, so no links to bogus scumware!

It appears that Spyware Terminator still works on 98SE. Although there's no actual tech support you can still download definitions. The download page recommends an older version, but the system specs for the product say that 98SE is supported. So maybe the latest version will run, albeit without realtime protection.........

it is worth noting that some computer owners running with win 98se are experiencing on -going problems updating the a squared program ;

of interest, there are no available updates for Adaware SE at present so

this may BE the end of the support??

and adaware 2007 will NOT run on the win 98se platform

(an 'alternative' is the superantispyware program )

(an 'alternative' is the superantispyware program )

Can you please confirm that this superantispyware program will be supported for Windows 98 se.

Just found an answer.

SUPERAntiSpyware.com software is compatible with Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, Vista, 2003 and XP Home/Pro.

Our software is not compatible with the Mac OS at this time.

Spybot is re-enabling support for 95 in the latest edition! So 98SE users will be fine!

Does anyone know if the definition file for Ad-Aware SE Plus/Professional/Enterprise that is available for manual download will work with the personal edition? If so, then it's just a matter of manually downloading it............

Support for 98se and ME were already integrated into Ad-aware, Lavasoft chose to abandon those two platforms when they redesigned their application, and in the process turned Ad-aware into unrecognizeable bloatware. In this event I choose to abandon Ad-aware, SUPERAntispyware has my support now. -kd5-

funny thing there is that they also "forgot" to add Vista 64bit to the list of supported os wink.gif

actually, you can still update your ad aware SE... manually. By downloading the defs.zip reference file available.

here's how:

1) go to this site to check on new reference file updates.

http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/

2) take note of the reference file name. SE1R211
it was released january 2, 2008 and is now available,

3) go to google, type "ad aware download file SE1R211" without the quotes.

3) download the zip file.

Why not just download it from the lavasoft website link you quoted!? Googling the definitions file is potentially dangerous, as you could download something bad from a third party!

Go to http://www.lavasoft.com/support/securitycenter/blog/ and click the hyperlink in the top right hand corner. Download the file, then manually unzip the file into your Ad-Aware SE folder. Simple!

D*mn, i didn't see the download link. it's hidden in the right corner of that page. thanks jaheira.
