There's a computer on the home network that showed an infection by the win32.backdoor.agent virus; OS is WinXP Home, with SP 2. Scan was done using Adaware 2007 ( 7.0.1.6 ).

Once the scan completed I clicked the check box for the virus then pushed the 'remove' button, causing no effect, then I tried the 'quarantine' button, again with no effect. Is this version of Adaware not fully functional, requiring a purchase/activation?

Followup actions taken:

Ran Combofix, which reported a few files deleted.

Ran Adaware again, with the latest definition file installed. Full scan performed, with no viruses detected. Was it eliminated by Combofix, or was it just a false positive on the earlier scan?
