If this is the first time you have run Windows Update manually, you will have to need to have your Windows software validated. This is called Windows Genuine Advantage. When asked to do this, click Continue. Once your Windows software has been validated, you may continue to scan for updates.
After scanning, you will be presented with a page showing you what updates are available for your computer.
Click on Install Updates.
You will have a new window open, and you will be able to see the updates being downloaded and installed.
You will know when it has finished when the message "You have successfully updated your computer" appears.
You may get asked to restart your computer. You can choose whether to restart now, or a bit later.

While using Windows Update, you may get asked to upgrade to Microsoft Update.
Microsoft Update is the same as Windows Update, but it lets you update programs like Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) as well as Windows.
You do not have to upgrade to Microsoft Update.
If you do upgrade to Microsoft Update, every time you use Windows Update in the future, it will change to Microsoft Update. It looks nearly identical to Microsoft Update, and works in just the same way.
