Full Version: winantivirus(?) cleanup
Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive General Support Issues
Allenwilkerson
I began receiving pop-ups at the end of last week, ran through all my spyware and antivirus stuff and thought I had it licked but I didn't. I got to searching this afternoon and found a previous thread related to my problem with winantivirus. The title of that thread was:
HELP ME! ad-A SE CANNOT DELETE THIS SPYWARE. The first post was by pious dated Jun13, 2006 at 5:20 am. As we had the same thing poping up I followed the instructions. The difference was when I would get a pop up for winantivirus it wouldn't completely load. at any rate. I ran smitfraudfix

LS CalamityJane
Thank you,

I need to examine a file from your system to determine what it is. It looks like a conhook variant, but I need to see it to confirm and to determine the fix.

Go here to upload the file as an attachment
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=1.0
Just press new topic (Make the subject: For CalamityJane from Allenwilkerson at LS ),
fill in a short message & then press the browse button and then navigate to & select this file on your computer, then press the *Post* button to upload the file

File to upload:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wshC10.dll

(Do not post HJT logs there as they will not get dealt with)

You DO NOT need to be a member to upload, anybody can upload the files

You will not see the files that have been uploaded as they only show to the authorized users who can download them. I will be able to collect the file from there and will reply to you back in this thread here at Lavasoft Support Forums.
Allenwilkerson
Calamity, got it done. Thank you so much for helping me out.
LS CalamityJane
Thank you for uploading the file.

This is Trojan-Downloader.Win32.ConHook.aa and not very widely detected, so I'll submit it to the various Anti-malware companies to add to their detection databases.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido AntiMalware.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

After installation:

[1]From the main ewido screen, click on update in the top menu, then click the Start update button.

[2]After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Close the program after updating (don't scan with it yet, we'll do that in SAFE MODE)

Copy the following instructions to have handy as you will need to be offline, in SAFE MODE and with IE closed so you will not be able to view this page during the process.

Reboot your PC into SAFE MODE
You can usually do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

Next, run a scan with Ewido.

[3]Click on the Scanner button in the Top menu, then click on the Complete System Scan button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so please be patient

[4]When the scan is done you will see a list of infected objects (if any found) At the bottom of the list, Please click on "recommended action"/and choose to Set all Elements to quarantine and check the box "Perform action with all infections".
If you get a warning about a file being in an archive, please choose *yes* to quarantine the entire archive

[5]When the scanner finishes, click on "Save Report" at the bottom. This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Copy and paste the results from that scan back here please for review smile.gif

*Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button smile.gif

Screen shots for choosing Recommended actions at the end of the scan, click on the link for "Recomended action" and choose *quarantine*:

Then press the *Apply to all actions* button:

When it finishes, press the *save report* button and post the results back here
Allenwilkerson

When I finished downloading ewido my AVG antivirus program had also just updated and hit on the folder I sent you earlier. I cleaned it with the avg first since it was stareing me in the face. I am pretty sure that whatever AVG caught is currently quarentined in that program. I just thought that was some pertinent information at the moment.
Thanks, Allen.
LS CalamityJane
Hi Allen,

On AVG, It could be because I sent them the files and they updated AVG which now includes this nasty biggrin.gif So your cooperation has helped everyone smile.gif I actually sent it out to about 50 different vendors but AVG is one of them on the list. I noticed it did not catch this nasty until after today's update

Could you now please scan once more with HijackThis and post a fresh log?
Allenwilkerson
GO US!!! That our sacrifice of so many hours to remove such a pain may reduce the overall amount of sufferening in the world, still does nothing to reduce my level of annoyment with this bug, but at least the world was served.

AVG killed the active file but left behind the registry entries. We'll use HijackThis to fix it.

Open HijackThis and checkmark these entries, then press the *fix checked* button

I think that should do it. Are you seeing any remaining problems on your end?
Allenwilkerson
I have not had any other problems. Thank you so much for all of your help. I don't know if you're being paid, but if whatever it is, you're not being paid enough. Thank you!
LS CalamityJane
There is a whole army of independent volunteers out here helping folks clean and secure their PCs...we do this as a labour of love wub.gif Adaware SE is one of the oldest in the Anti-Spyware business providing a free fully functional Antispyware scanner for many years it has been one of our primary cleaning tools. They also offer a paid version for realtime protection and prevention which I highly recommend for future protection:
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adawareplus/

Have you done a full system scan with the freeware scanner from Adaware? If not, do that now and let it remove any critical objects found:

Please can you make sure that you are using
Ad-aware SE Build 106r1
Note: If your version is 6.0 and not the SE, you need to uninstall and get the latest version from the above link.

[if not Uninstall your old Ad-aware first then install SE]
Then use the WebUpDate
to get the latest Definition file
SE1R112 15.06.2006
To do this Open Ad-aware
Click the WebUpDate
button at the top right hand side of the Ad-aware screen (The world globe).
Click "Connect"
Ad-aware will then download the latest Definition file for you.
To make sure it is updated , look at the main
Ad-aware screen, and look under "Initialization Status"
It should say the Latest Definition file.
then scan doing a "Full Scan"
and then post your logfile here by using the Add-Reply Feature .
As Logs are stored in :
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-aware\Logs\.
An easy way to get there is to
click Start,
click Run
And type in and press ENTER: %appdata%
then click Lavasoft
then Ad-Aware
and then Logs.
scroll down to find the latest one that you have
(by date & time)
and open it right Click select all
copy and then paste the contents of it here.
(Make sure that all of your Logfile has been posted, sometimes it will require two post's to get it all)
Allenwilkerson
Alrighty miss jane, one AASE log coming up.

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Put a Checkmark in the box next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the checkmark next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help smile.gif.
How do I prevent Browser Hijacks and Spyware?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13620

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/

And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...s/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
