Hi rachel10173, welcome smile.gif

Could you please run a free tool called: HijackThis
to create a diagnostic log so we can see what exactly is running on your system.

Instructions on creating a HijackThis Log

This variant you have is very difficult to remove once it has implanted itself. We may need to use some special tools to remove it.

Hi CJ,

Many thanks for helping me I have to say this thing is driving me bananas!!! when the adwatch is loaded it keeps on detecting a harmful process called a dialer and I also have something that keeps appearing on the desktop called install sys protect, I don't know if these are linked to the winfixer or not?

LS CalamityJane
You've got signs of a Gaobot worm which may be trying to install malware. Adaware doesn't detect worms, but it is blocking some of the malware from installing.

To get rid of the worm:

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido AntiMalware.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

After installation:

[1]From the main ewido screen, click on update in the top menu, then click the Start update button.

[2]After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Close the program after updating (don't scan with it yet, we'll do that in SAFE MODE)

Copy the following instructions to have handy as you will need to be offline, in SAFE MODE and with IE closed so you will not be able to view this page during the process.

Reboot your PC into SAFE MODE
You can usually do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam
.........................................
[3]Open Hijackthis and scan. When it finishes, checkmark these entries in the list:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [csr] csrrs.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [csr] csrrs.exe

[4]Next, run a scan with Ewido.

Click on the Scanner button in the Top menu, then click on the Complete System Scan button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so please be patient

[5]When the scan is done you will see a list of infected objects (if any found) At the bottom of the list, Please click on "recommended action"/and choose to Set all Elements to quarantine and check the box "Perform action with all infections".

If you get a warning about a file being in an archive, please choose *yes* to quarantine the entire archive

[6]When the scanner finishes, click on "Save Report" at the bottom. This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Copy and paste the results from that scan back here please for review smile.gif

*Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 30 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button smile.gif

That looks good smile.gif

Could you please scan once more with HijackThis and post a fresh log please?

Any remaining symptoms you see on your end?
rachel10173
CJ,

Can you tell me how I managed to get infected with these files? and what would you recomend that I do in the future to prevent myself?

Also now that these scans seem to have go rid of them where do they actually go?

CJ,

Just another quickie.......is there anything that you see in the scan logs that you recomend that i get rid of??

Many thanks
Rachel
LS CalamityJane
I'll answer your questions about how you might have gotten it and what prevention steps I recommend at the end in a bit (that's always after I get you clear of the infection). Right now there is still more work to do

Would you please do a search on your system for this file:
csrrs.exe

Tell me what you find by:

name

Exact location (full path)

date
rachel10173
I ran a search and absolutely nothing was found, I hope I have done it right.......Clicked start then search typed the Csrrs.exe in and then searched??
LS CalamityJane
Yes, I just needed you to search. I suspect a prior cleaning step removed the actual file and all we are seeing is the leftover references in the Registry which HijackThis can fix those.

Do a scan with HijackThis
When it finishes, checkmark these entries in the list
Then press the *fix checked* button

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [csr] csrrs.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [csr] csrrs.exe

Scan again and post a fresh HijackThis log please smile.gif

They are still there and I now (duh!) see the problem. AdWatch is on automatic block. Since it can't tell if the changes we are making to the registry are "bad" or "good" it blocks and should ask you if you want to allow if you have it set to prompt.

But let's turn it all off for now and then you can re-enable the Adwatch blocking when we get this done.

Open AdAware SE.

1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".

2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off

3. Uncheck (red X) both items.

Open Hijackthis and scan. Checkmark these two entries and press *fix checked*

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [csr] csrrs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [csr] csrrs.exe

Close HijackThis and reboot your PC.

Scan again with HijackThis after the reboot and post a fresh log. Once we're sure they are gone you can re-enable your Adwatch
rachel10173
After the reboot the adwatch started but only the active had a green tick, it popped up with the csrrs.exe asking to accept or block. At the moment i've left the window open and not clicked on either accept or block

Two removal tools I want you to run next (these should not take very long)
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

double-click *VundoFix.exe* to run it.
- Put a check next to *Run VundoFix as a task*.
- You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click *OK*
- When VundoFix re-opens, click the *Scan for Vundo* button.
- Once it's done scanning, click the *Remove Vundo* button.
- You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click *YES*
- Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
- When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click *OK*.
- Turn your computer back on.
- Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt into your next reply

...........................................
Make a copy of this next instruction as the steps need to be done in SAFE MODE and you won't be able to see this window

1. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (Win2k/WinXP only!).
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

How to extract (decompress) zipped or compressed files
http://www.lvsonline.com/compresstut/index.shtml

Note : process.exe is part of the SmitFraudFix tool and is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky, Panda) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode
You can usually do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

3. Once in Safe mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.

4. Once back into normal mode, please scan with HijackThis to produce a log. Post that log into your topic along with the other requested logs named below.

Logs needed in your next post are:

rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed

LS CalamityJane
That one looks good! Are you still seeing any signs of infection or warnings?
rachel10173
The icon for sys intaller was on the desktop so i deleted it and emptied the recycle bin and then norton detected winfixer, i've just been into norton and deleted the files that it had in quarentine and rebooted and so far nothing has popped up (fingers & toes crossed) smile.gif
LS CalamityJane
Ok, let me know if you see any further problems. It turns out that these newer variants of Vundo hide the entries that would normally show on a HijackThis log. (the 02 & 20 sections). They are now unhidden but I think VundoFix got the bad ones.

One more list I need from you.

Please open HijackThis and instead of scan choose * Open Misc Tools Section*

Then choose *Open Uninstall Manager*

That will make a list. Choose *save list* and notepad should popup with a text file. Please copy those results back here smile.gif
rachel10173
None of the bad stuff is popping up anymore all i do get is the odd pop up advert, any suggestions? smile.gif

Looks OK!

On the popups, there is a popup blocker build into Explorer SP2. Link is further down in my prevention recommendaitons under: configure the enhanced security features in SP2

Some final cleanup and prevention recomendations follow.

You can go ahead and delete any of the special tools we used for fixes. They won't be needed and fresh copies are always best should you run into this again.

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files.
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Put a Checkmark in the box next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the checkmark next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help smile.gif.
How do I prevent Browser Hijacks and Spyware?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13620

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/

And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...xp/iesecxp.mspx

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...s/mbsahome.mspx
Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.

I've deleted the temp files out of windows, but the next file you asked to to delete isn't there C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp, I click on documents and settings\all users but after that the local settings file isn't there. I've also done the temporary internet files and tried to do the system restore, I clicked the check box and applied it, it said it was going to shut down but never did. Any suggestions why that file woudl be missing and why it wouldn't restart after clicking on that check box? sad.gif
LS CalamityJane
Oh, sorry. Local settings is a hidden folder. Do this to unhide files:

How to Show Hidden Files
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
............................
Windows XP
Click Start.

Open My Computer.

Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.

Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.

Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

Click Yes to confirm.

Click OK.

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"
................
You can just manually restart your computer. Then go back into System restore and turn it back ON again by unchecking the box.

Hi CJ,

I've deleted all the things you asked me to and everything was going so well until my Norton just popped up saying it has detected winfixer again ohmy.gif Do you think there might be a problem with Norton or do you think it may have come back?
LS CalamityJane
I need to know exactly what Norton detected and where.

File Name

Exact location (full path)
rachel10173
same place as before, which is why it made me wonder if Norton was playing up?

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Programe Files\USYP_0001_N76M1005NETINSTALLER.EXE
LS CalamityJane
I think that's real and I'm pretty sure Ewido can detect it. But first, I just noticed something dodgy with one of the files on your HijackThis log.

I like to get a copy of that file to examine please.

Go here to upload the file as an attachment
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=1.0
Just press new topic (Make the subject: For CalamityJane from rachel10173 at LS ),
fill in a short message & then press the browse button and then navigate to & select the following file on your computer, then press the *Post* button to upload the file

Files to upload:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\RACHEL~1\MYDOCUMENTS\MYMUSIC\Crack\fastload.dll

(Note: Did you make a folder called: Crack and place it in the MyMusic folder? If not, are there other files in there? Upload those as well please if you did not.) You can add additional file by using the "Extra Attachments" link on the site in your reply screen.

You DO NOT need to be a member to upload, anybody can upload the files

You will not see the files that have been uploaded as they only show to the authorized users who can download them
............................
Next, please Update Ewido using the *Update* button at the top. and Press *Start Updates*. Let them install if any are found. Then, do a full system scan with Ewido. If any infected files are found, at the end of the scan click on the Recommended link and choose *Quarantine* then hit the *Apply to All* button. Ewido will clean. Then press the *Save Report* button and post the results back here.

The file you uploaded was legitimate. I just needed to check because of the strange location, but it does belong to WindowBlind.

Could you please run this free tool (in safe mode). I suspect some part of this infection is hiding so I'm going to be checking a number of things

2. Search:

* Open the SmitfraudFix folder
* Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
* Type 1 at the prompt (for Search) and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Ok, that's fine - nothing found.

Please do this online AV scan:

Copy the report at the end and post the results back here.
It will not remove anything found, but I just want to see the log results.

I picked out the infected files from the list.

Reboot into safe mode and delete all of these:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\USYP_0001_N76M1005NetInstaller.exe
(Clear out all files in the Downloaded Program Files folder). Any that are legit can be easily replaced when you visit the webpage that need them, it will just ask you to redownload. But that installer is hiding somewhere in the DPF folder - which is where items downloaded via ActiveX are stored).

C:\Documents and Settings\Rachel Harman\Local Settings\Temp\ICD11.tmp\USYP_0001_N76M1005NetInstaller.exe
(clear out all files in the Temp folder, delete the files not the folder itself)

Where did you get these from? Do you know?

Hi CJ,

OK I've deleted the files, the only one I was confused by was:

C:\Documents and Settings\Rachel Harman\Local Settings\Temp\ICD11.tmp\USYP_0001_N76M1005NetInstaller.exe
(clear out all files in the Temp folder, delete the files not the folder itself)

I went into the temp file and then into the folder ICD11.tmp and deleted the items in there, is that what you wanted me to do? because the temp file is full of allsorts of stuff and wasn't sure if you meant delete everything in that or not.............confused (sorry) unsure.gif

As for the other files I've had them absolutely ages there just wallpaper pictures, and I got them from www.Themes Unlimited.com, why wouldn't Norton detect these as viruses? ohmy.gif
LS CalamityJane
Oh the bad folder you CAN delete: folder ICD11.tmp<---delete this folder

Sorry for the confusion. I didn't want you to think you have to delete the entire TEMP folder itself. Just the items inside that it will let you delete. There may be a few in use by windows but that named "bad" folder above, I do need to know if you are able to delete that one.
LS CalamityJane
@jusstruckin Please post your OWN NEW TOPIC here:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showforum=36

This topic belongs to rachel10173 only! I can't do someone else's logs in this thread or it would be way too confusing.
rachel10173
Right......... smile.gif I've deleted everything that was inside the temp folder which includes that bad file laugh.gif
