Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive HijackThis Logs

I have the dreaded AntiSpy Storm virus (AKA PCSecurityLab.com) in my computer that gives me a black warning screen, numerous pop-ups claiming my system is in dire need of spending money on the AntiSpy Storm software, and other pop-ups claiming they have the only prodcut that will save me. I have run HiJackThis but will wait to post upon further notice. Any help getting rid of this incredible PITB would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have several annoying pop-ups that were caused by AntiSpy Stormware. I get several versions of the yellow caution logo warnings that talk about "Internet attack attempted. Click here to prevent;" a red and a blue fake Windows Security system boxes that warn of malware and "trojan downloader xs"; a black wallpaper that says "My computer has been infected"; and random pop-ups that caim "Cannot find file:///C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/detect.htm" that appear twice and then direct me to my homepage; and more.

I've run the latest AdAware. Here is my HiJackThis logfile:

Hello liquidman,

I've merged your duplicate topics here, in case you are wondering.

Apologies for the late reply, we've been quite swamped in here as you can probably see. I'm now subscribed to this topic so I will receive a notice from the board as soon as you reply, so I can be here much more quickly than it has taken to get to your new topic.

You have a variant of the zlob trojan that apparently we don't detect yet and I would like to get a sample of a file from you so that we can add it to our detection database which will help everyone.

Please go here to upload a suspicious file for analysis.

When you have checkmarked the above listed entries, then press the *fix checked* button

CLose HijackThis and restart your computer please.

Then please download and run this free tool to make a log to post back here for review:

1. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (Win2k/WinXP only!).
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

How to extract (decompress) zipped or compressed files
http://www.lvsonline.com/compresstut/index.shtml

2. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

I will also need for you to scan once more with Hijackthis and post a fresh HijackThis log in addition to the rapport.txt requested above.

SO, logs needed in your next reply are:

1. Rapport.txt from the SmitfraudFix tool

2. Fresh HijackThis log

Hello liquidman,

Hello CalamityJane,

Thank you for taking a look at my computer problems. I understand how busy you guys are and I appreciate your time and effort in assisting me.

First of all, I did as you requested and uploaded the "suspicious file" for analysis. Second, I deleted the checkmarked boxes per the HiJackThis file as you asked. Third, I downloaded SmitFraudFix and checked the folder. Here is the file you requested from the SmitfraudFix that lists the infected files:

LS CalamityJane
Good morning liquidman!

Good job with getting the file to me and running those tools. SmitfraudFix log looks good, but the HijackThis log doesn't much changed from the first run (and those *fixes* I listed are not fixed)

In fact, you also have an older obsolete version of HijackThis, so let's get rid of that one and get the right one to use and we'll try that step again (instructions to follow below)

I also notice that your PC seems to have a problem with the date. It is showing one month ahead. Please check your clock and date settings to be sure you are on the right date? That setting would be in your Control Panel under "Date and Time". Make any adjustments necessary for your date and time zone.

Next steps follow:

1. First, delete the HijackThis.exe that you have located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Audra\Desktop\HiJackThis_v2.exe

Please make a new folder to put your (new) HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use something like
"C:\Program Files\HijackThis" but feel free to use any name. This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed.

2. Then go to this site linked below to get a fresh version of the 2.2 HijackThis to run a scan and fix the remaining items.

Download Hijack This from here:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/to...ckthis/download

3. Unzip the file to the new folder you made and doubleclick on HijackThis.exe to open the program. On the Main Menu page, Choose *Do a system scan only*

Make sure that you have made a copy of these instructions to have handy because I want you to do the scan and the *fix* with all browsers closed. The only thing you should have open is HijackThis.

Do your "System scan only" and when it finishes, place a checkmark in the boxes next to these entries:

Once you have a checkmark next to each of those, then press the *Fix checked* button.

Then close HijackThis and open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. (Restart your computer)

After the restart,
go back to HijackThis and do a system scan and save a log.

Post the new log back here for review.

I will also need a copy of the new Rapport.txt log from running the fix option in SmitfraudFix.

I will be out of town today and back this evening to look for replies so give me a little time to get back to yours.

Good morning liquidman!

Good morning Calamity Jane,

Thanks for the quick response. I have fixed the calendar and uploaded the latest version of HiJackThis.

And don;t worry about not being around this afternoon -- I'll be watching the Patriots v. Colts, anyway!

Here is the latest HiJackThis logfile as you requested:

Thanks for your help.

LS CalamityJane
So far so good, EXCEPT, all we have left now is some "fake" entries made in your registry by the infection.

Assuming you followed my directions to *fix checked* entries in Hijackthis, these are still appearing and need to go. It is possible (and somewhat likely) that these remain because you have some other security program blocking the changes we are trying to make here using Hijackthis. If you are getting prompt from another program about changes to the registry when you run Hijackthis and use *fix checked*, then please choose "allow" for these changes (we making these for the GOOD) smile.gif

Open HijackThis and do a *system scan only*

When it finishes, place a checkmark against all of the below listed.

Now, having the above all checkmarked - press the *fix checked* button.

Scan again and hopefully, you will see those entries now gone?

Hello CalamityJane,

Okay, I did as you asked and all of the entries are now gone. I wasn't sure if you wanted me to post a new HJT log, so, in case you needed it:

Again, thank you for helping me deal with this problem.
LS CalamityJane
Looks good! I think you got it this time smile.gif

FYI, Ad-Aware's latest update this morning addresses this particular variant, so you may want to run a full system scan (after getting the lastest update) just in case it finds any stagglers, but I think the active infection is licked anyway smile.gif

Some final cleanup and prevention recommendations follow.

You can go ahead and delete any special tools we used ( SmitfraudFix). They won't serve a future purpose and are replaced with updated versions frequently, so the copies you have are probably already out of date and no need to keep them.

Do a disk cleanup. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: Cleanmgr
Wait while Windows scans your system for files to delete.
Make sure these 3 are checkmarked and press *ok* to delete them.

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Now that your PC is clean, make sure all programs are running properly and then you'll need to reset your restore point in Windows XP.......why?

One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after malware removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Put a Checkmark in the box next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
Go to Start and right-click on *My Computer*.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the checkmark next to "Turn off System Restore".
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Ad-Aware Plus has realtime protection to prevent infections before they have a chance to a get stronghold on your PC

Also, I can't stress enough the importance of having your Windows critical Security Updates. Most malware today uses exploits on unpatched systems to creep onto your system without your even doing anything but visiting an infected webpage!!

Watch what you download, be careful where you surf, and don't trust attachments or even links in email and Instant messages. Even if they come from a buddy, that buddy could be the one infected and it is the virus sending that link from his account. You click on it thinking he is trusted, and *boom* you're infected.
Many "Phishing" attempts are made by cleverly crafted email to look like it is coming from an "official" source (like Microsoft, or your bank, or some other provider). Don't click on links in those. Go directly to the site instead and navigate the menus - don't trust email you think came from a "safe source" unless you are expecting it! There is more in the link I will provide below, but those are the choice avenues of infection these days.
Stay far AWAY from cracks and warez sites - you're sure to get infected files there, and the same can be said for files downloaded from p2p (more than half are usually infected and probably not detectable by your current security software - the newest nasties are always released in those venues).

A word about shared computers and networks.
Share Your PC

Not all users need to have Admin Accounts. It is much safer to have most of your users on a shared system running as Limited User accounts. That way, if there is "an accident", it will only affect one user's account and not the entire system.

Next, I highly recommend you get some extra protection to prevent future infections. Here are some things you can do and some free programs to help smile.gif.
How do I prevent Browser Hijacks and Spyware?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13620

I'm happy to see you have SP2 installed. That will address numerous security issues in your Operating System and IE
Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. This is the first step in malware prevention, as many nasties now take advantage of new exploits and if not patched, you are vulnerable!
Windows Update

And see this link for instructions on how to configure the enhanced security features in SP2:

I also highly recommend to get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 2.0 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer

Choose MBSAsetup-EN.msi = (English Version) or the language appropriate for you.
