Bernd
Hi all together.

My system: XP prof. with all updates and Lavasoft Personal Firewall 2.0.

A few days ago I tried to install for the first time the program "sandboxie.exe" (version 3.0 from sandboxie.com). During installation a popup apears:

"Program already installed on path: C:\..\Lavasoft\Firewall\Kernel (!!). You have the options:
override the exsisting installation or reinstall or stop the procedure."

I was a little bit "astonished" because sandboxie and Lavasoft should have nothing to do which each other. Having in mind that an actual system backup was available, I tried just for fun the first option. What shall I say, the installation works and after an reboot sandboxie works well and also Lavasoft's firewall seem to be ok. A view in the kernel folder show some new files which definitly belong to sandboxie. But what happens here? Is sandboxie part of lavasoft's firewall kernel or is the file Sandbox.sys the problem? What is the function of a sandbox within the firewall(interesting question)? Are there any interaction between sandboxie 3.0 and the firewall 2.0? What happens when deinstall sandboxie or the firewall?

I have asked for Lavasoft's support with no answer till yet. For me this looks really strange and therefore to be on the safe side I have reinstalled my system backup waiting on what's going on. Has anyone an idea?

regards
Bernd

Hello Bernd,

I don't know if the Support Center will know about this one. I did find the answer though and will post if for you here smile.gif

The Lavasoft Personal Firewall is based upon Agnitum's Outpost Firewall and in searching the Outpost Forum I found the answer posted in a topic about the new version here:
http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18611

See in particular item #7 in that topic:
QUOTE
#7 Sandboxie: Outpost 4.0 includes new drivers, one of which is called sandbox.sys. This confuses the Sandboxie installer into believing its software is already present - if using Sandboxie, install it before Outpost to avoid this issue. This also means if uninstalling Sandboxie, Outpost will need to be uninstalled first.

Because the Lavasoft Personal firewall is based upon Agnitum's Outpost technology, it would also have that file he mentions called sandbox.sys which confuses the installer of the Sandboxie program.

Sandbox is not associated at all with either Lavasoft Personal Firewall or Agnitum's Outpost.
