First off, I hope I am posting this in the correct place, I read that i'm supposed to follow the instructions in the step-by-step guide first, but that seemed to only contain links to software I already have.

Lent my computer to a friend and while he's very reliable with respect to looking after the device, he doesn't know much about protecting the software smile.gif.

Thought I had it all pretty well locked down but got it back today and it seems to have a mixture of some of the most popular stuff i'm seeing on this forum.

Details below...

P.S. Have you guys changed forums recently? I'm sure I used to have an account here... oh well.

Ok, so far I have seen:

homepage kept resetting to blank - now fixed but...
automatically goes to http://www.topsecuritysite.net/ even when homepages is something different, even the home button forwards to there.
ZLOB
Virtumonde
atmclk
blank pop ups
advertising popups
spyware-quake
something that kept popping up from the tray
and a couple of others i've forgotten now.

i've thrown everything I have at it and it seems to have gotten rid of quite a bit. here's what i've used:

registry mechanic
ad aware
spybot
stinger
ewido
smitfraudfix - (this is one of the ones i had trouble with in safemode)
zonealarm virus+spyware
highjack this.

I think some of these didn't run properly in safe mode, so that could be part of the problem.
I will post my current highjack this log now and then go and try again.

please let me know if there are any other details or logs you need.

Thanks for the help, really useful site smile.gif

Peter

Ok, it wouldn't let me attach the txt file... pasted on to the end here:

Hello,

It looks like you are probably dealing with conhook as well.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • In case it says that nothing was been found, Right click the list box (white box) in the main VundoFix window.
  • Select “Add More Files?â€? from the menu that comes up. This will open a new VundoFix window.
  • In the Window: copy and paste next in the first field: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cbxywxx.dll
  • Click the “Add Filesâ€? button.
  • Click the "Close Window" button.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
* Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: Nothing - {686a161d-5bd1-4999-8832-6393f41e564c} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp103.tmp
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6D794CB4-C7CD-4c6f-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxywxx.dll

Thanks,

Peter

Hello,

Yes, Teatimer also gives alerts when you remove entries yourself, so in those cases, you must accept and and don't let teatimer block it, because when you tell teatimer not to accept, it will restore the entries you fixed and place them back.

Delete next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsp.dll

By the way, did you create this entry yourself?

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Lock Computer on Startup] rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation

If not fix it. I already asked you to fix it previously, because I see no point why you should have a command to lock the computer on startup.
If you want to use that command, just create a desktop shortcut with that command, click when you need it. But don't let it startup with windows, because that doesn't make sense.
peteremcc
hey

sorry, i meant to mention the lock in my last message.
yes i put that there myself, it's actually quite handy smile.gif

i set my computer to auto login to my account on startup meaning I can turn on the computer, go away and when i come back it has loaded up the computer, logged in, and logged out again so appears no different.
the difference is it loads up all the programs in the background while your away.

anyway...

it wont let me delete the awtsp.dll i guess maybe ill have to go back to safe mode for this.

also, i did cancel the changes that spybot mentioned
they happened at startup after i restarted not while i was in safe mode removing the stuff.

will this mean i'll have to run the scans again.

i need to go now but i will run them again, delete the file and run the scan later when i get back.

thanks
peter

I really hope that Teatimer didn't restore these entries again, because we'll have to start all over again, because the awtsp.dll was not deleted by Vundofix and when teatimer restores the entries in the registry again, it reloads the dll and that explains why you can't delete it - not even in safe mode.

I also want you to rename Hijackthis.exe to analyse.exe, because some vundo versions target hijackthis.exe and hide all O2 and O20 entries in it and it looks like this is the cause.
Then reboot
Doubleclick the analyse.exe and post the log in your next reply.

Hey, I don't think the entries were restored. After I closed my browser I realised that Teatimer had asked me again about the same changes so i was able to choose the other option.

I also managed to delete awtsp.dll by booting into vista so that is no longer there.

I haven't tested running IE again yet (incase that brought some more virus' etc), infact i blocked IE completely in Zone Alarm and used opera.

Here is the latest Highjack This file... run with it named analyser.exe

Thanks for the help.

Clean log. smile.gif

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
