I HAVE BEEN TRYING A MILLION DIFFERENT THINGS TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM I AM HAVING. I HAVE SOME SORT OF VIRUS ON MY COMPUTER. IT CHANGES MY DESKTOP BACKROUND PICTURE TO THIS RED PICTURE THAT TELLS ME TO DOWNLOAD PROTECTION SOFTWARE ASAP.

ALONG WITH THE PICTURE THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT POP UPS THAT COME UP AND TAKE ME TO THESE VIRUS PROTECTION WEBSITES... I ALSO GET SYSTEM ALERTS TELLING ME THAT WINDOWS HAS DETECTED VIRUS OPERATIONS ON MY SYSTEM. IVE DOWNLOADED AD-AWARE, ANTI SPYWARE, SMITFRAUD FIX, SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY. WHAT CAN I DO TO REMOVE THIS?

PLEASE HELP.. DESPERATE!

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

• Viewpoint
• Viewpoint Manager
• Viewpoint Media Player

Then, * Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

* Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Windows Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.

Then redownload Combofix again, because the version you are using may be outdated...
* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.
