Lavasoft Support Forums > Archived Topics > Archives: Resolved/Inactive Topics > Resolved/Inactive HijackThis Logs
msb825617
My computer seems on the verge of destruction lately. The performance has been soo slow and I keep getting repeated popups even after finding and cleaning so many infections with AdAware 2007 and Windows Defender. I have updated all the latest definitions, and it keeps coming up with Tracking Cookies and other infections. Most of the pop-ups start with or include:
url.cpvfeed
pop-under.paypopover
bandarama.com
affiliates.coaec.com
adnetserver.com
logintracking101

I downloaded the latest version of Hijackthins, and this is my logfile. I appreciate any and all help. Thanks in advance smile.gif

Hi

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a RiskTool; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between good and malicious use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:
C:\rapport.txt

Blade81,
Thanks for the help but once the program was downloaded and I tried to run it, this is the screen that came up...

Fichier Process.exe absent !
Dezippez la totalit- de l'archive dans un dossier.

Process.exe file missing !
Unzip all the archive in a folder

Press any key to continue...

Not sure if this is relating to what you had said about the process.exe being detected as a risktool.
Would be so gateful for any and all advice.
Thanks my firend.
-Peace
Blade81
Hi

What anti virus protection are you using? Can't see any in the log so it's unlikely that something would have deleted process.exe.

Did you first unzip all files into Smitfraudfix folder as instructed or did you try to run the file straight from the zip packet? If you didn't extract all files into a folder then try to do it again.

msb825617
Hi

Im using ad-aware 2007 and windows defender.
Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm not sure what you mean by unzip all files into smitfraudfix folder:-( once it was downloaded I just tried opening smitfraudfix.cmd. if that's my problem I would really appreciate a quick break down on doing that.

I am including a new hijackthis log in this reply in case it can help.
Thanks again my friend, greatly appreciated :-)

Hi

Yes, it looks like you didn't unzip it. Below are instructions to extract (unzip) the folder. Make sure you've downloaded Smitfraudfix.zip to your desktop first.

How To Unzip a file or folder

1. Double-click on the Zip file.
2. It should expand automatically.
3. A file or folder with the same name (without the Zip) should appear.
4. Drag the contents of the Zip file to the desktop (or another location). When you do this, you will be copying the information from the Zip file to the computer. This will be your working copy of the data from the Zip file.
5. After that you should have Smitfraudfix folder on your desktop containing files as shown in screenshot in my first reply.

That shows you're still running Smitfraudfix from temporary folder. You really need to first copy the zip file to your desktop and extract (as instructed above) it there before trying running.

by "Clear Housecall quarantined items" i assume you mean the AVG items in quarantine.

Actually I mean findings in C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\.housecall6.6\Quarantine folder showed in Kaspersky log.

Can't see anything wrong in your log. What kind of popups you get and do those appear only on specific sites?
msb825617
ok thanks, i cleared the housecall quarantined items.
the regular internet explorer pop ups have slowed down except for a few. a majority of them are http://popunder.paypopup.com/close.php
but most of the popups come in a window in the middle of the screen and the borders and one x out button(no minimize or restore) are very small. they tend to really jump out as soon as i search from google or any other site that has a search engine like amazon.com, but most sites will bring those with them as well.
i used the ATF cleaner and here is the last HJT log.

would it help to see the running processes if i do a HJT log while one of the popups is on the screen?
thanks for your time and patience.

Hi

I'm not sure if there would be anything in running processes when popups occur. Anyway, let's try Combofix. It might help us here smile.gif

1. Download this file -
combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your
next reply with a fresh hjt log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause
it to stall
msb825617
ok so here is the lof from combofix...

Many thanks, things are definetely clearing up :-)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the
    Download
    button to the right.
  • Check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • Comodo BOCLEAN <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
  • Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
Spybot can be downloaded at this location
  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
    SpywareBlaster tutorial
  • Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
    bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here
    Download it here
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    2. Click run
    3. In the dialog box, type services.msc
    4. hit enter, then locate dns client
    5. Highlight it, then double-click it.
    6. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    7. Click ok

  • Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here to choose one
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one

  • Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

    Have a great day,
    Blade cool.gif
    msb825617
    WOW MY FRIEND!!!
We did it! everything seems to be corrected. no more pop ups, nothing!!!
I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the help you have given over the past few weeks. Hopefully you weren't just using your free time and some how you are compensated for all your help. If there is anything I can do for you please let me know, whether it be sending a note to a supervisor or a report that might be of help. It's the least I can do.
If for some reason in the future if I need help is there anyway to get in contact with you through the site?
Once again a million thank you's!!!!!!!!
Take care and wishing you health and happiness :-)
