Next, navigate to C:\Program Files\hijackthis
Now, right-click HijackThis.exe (the dynamite icon) and select Rename.
Give it a new name of Scanner.exe.

Create a new log, and post it back here.

I have also been running AVG Free up until about a week ago. I decided to uninstall it and try running Zonealarm anti virus as AVG was not fixing my problems (neither is zonealarm seems to detect and repair the same problems each day but they come back)


I then followed your instructions and downloaded / installed Avira, I have not run this yet (only had a quick look at it but not sure how to start it manually, it's set to run at 12 o'clock 10/07/07)

Hi DJT,

Make sure Zone Alarm Anti-Virus is disabled. Only one Anti-Virus program should be running on any computer.

Please do the following...

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

2. I need to see another log from HijackThis.

• Run Hijackthis.
• Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
• Next click on Open uninstall manager.
• Press the Save list button.
• Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
• Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

Please do the following...

1. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

2. Open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button

Here are some tips for a clean and secure computer.

For XP users.
It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware. You can clean this by doing the following:

• Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
• Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
• Close the Help and Support Center box.
• Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
• Select (C: ) then click OK.
• Click the More Options tab.
• Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click on the Security tab
3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click on Default Level and click OK
5. Click on the Custom Level button.
   • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
   • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
   • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
   • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
   • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
   • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
   • Internet Explorer 7 users: Check all other items and make sure that they meet the (recommended) setting when applies.
   • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
   • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the
   settings, press the Yes button.
6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Thank you very much, all still seems good! Are you suggesting that I run additional spyware (etc) programs? Also, how do I learn what you know about this sort of thing so that maybe I can fix such problems myself in the future?
