Full Version: Adaware Not Detecting My Cookies

When I run a Full Scan I find only two or three items for removal even though my web browser cookie counter shows many (30-40) cookies. I have my scanning options set to include Tracking Cookies and MRU Objects and my TAI level set to 0 (maximum sensitivity). I have not been using TrackSweep. How come AdAaware isn’t detecting all the cookies that my browser has counted?

Does AdAware list each cookie separately?

I have AdAware version 7.0.1.5 installed. My browser is Internet Explorer and my ISP Earthlink has a cookie counter installed on the toolbar. It shows the number of cookies detected while using IE.

Any help on this?

Ad-Aware scans do not detect all cookies that are set on your computer, only so-called Tracking Cookies that are considered to be more of a privacy issue.

Tobias,

Thanks for the reply. It is strange that with my normal use of the web I'm not collecting Tracking Cookies. My AdAware scans have not shown any. Is there a way I can test to be sure that my AdAware is detecting Tracking Cookies? Is there a safe web site that uses Tracking Cookies that I can visit and then run a scan to see if the Tracking Cookie is detected by my AdAware? Again, I surf the web all the time and none of my scans have detected Tracking Cookies. That seems strange.

I usually go to Yahoo!, Amazon and ebay and click around for a few minutes to generate cookies. Do that and report back. Please also double check that you have cookies in the
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Cookies\ folder, since that is where Internet Explorer normally would save its cookies.

Tobias,

Per your advice, I went to the web sites you mentioned and generated a bunch of cookies (23 by my Earthlink cookie counter, 10 cookies in the C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Cookies\ folder). I then ran a Full Scan. It detected only 2 MRU Objects and no Tracking Cookies.

It seems that there is something wrong with the cookie detection function on my AdAware 7.0.1.5. Do you have any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks.

Hi
If you are using IE 7, there is no cookie folder that is visible like there was in IE 6. My son found the cookie folder some how since he is the computer wizard in my family. This cookie folder is hidden and I don't believe it even shows up when you show hidden folders. I know it is there some where though since he made it so I can see it when I want to. This is with XP pro.

The IE7 cookie folder is here: C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\Cookies
It does not show up in Windows Explorer unless you make it (type the address in the Address bar).

I have the same problem.

Ad-watch se found loads of cookies, this new version ad-watch 2007 seems to stop none. I just did a full scan with Ad-aware 2007 and it found 143 tracking cookies with an average TAI of 2.92.

I hope this is going to be fixed soon!

There are at least four of us (myself, cammer, DerekS, and Hunni at http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=11006) who have noted the drastic reduction in cookie detection by AdAware. It's not just my problem.

I find AdAware detecting only a few or no cookies (tracking or otherwise) while the previous edition detected numerous cookies. I have yet to hear Lavasoft give a good explanation.
